Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?

6

Of all the Christmas songs that l'll have to start listening to soon, this fits into the tolerable range. Co-writer Bob Geldof, in his typical manner: "I am responsible for two of the worst songs in history. The other one is 'We Are the World' [i.e., through his activism]. Any day soon, I will go to the supermarket, head to the meat counter and it will be playing. Every f ... ing Christmas."

I agree, but for me tolerable range is a 4, which stands for OKAY.

Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?: 1

I guess it had to happen one time, but I finally arrived at my first 1 here. Ironically it comes from BonnieLaurel, who is also responsible for my only 10 (not counting my own nomination, To Ramona).

Look, this song was made for charity so that's something of a redeeming factor, but since 1984 is long gone and the profits of the song are no longer going to Ethiopia there is no reason anymore to listen to this. Even at a young age I felt the question "Do they know it's Christmas time at all?" was completely wrong and the rest of the lyrics are equally embarrassing. Not quite as embarrassing as the self-aggrandizing We Are the World, but close enough. And this one has worse music. It feels like production was done in five minutes. Before you get to the bells in the chorus there is a lot of mud to wade through. It just doesn't sound all that well-executed. That in tandem with the abhorrent lyrics make me wish that this is on my surprisingly short lists of songs that should be removed from the planet. It served it's function 35 years ago, now go along please.

A few weeks ago I saw the musical The Book of Mormon. That one has a great satire on songs like this:

I do not have a literal one ;)
But it certainly would contain the complete "works" of Dutch "singer" Jan smit.

Sorry Rob but there are two typos. The name of the singer of "Fotos y Recuerdos" is Selena and not Selenas. And the name of the Flares song is "Foot Stompin'" and not "Food Stompin'"

Thanks, I did not even notice. It's also "Foot Stomping" with a g at the end. I probably spelled it wrong on my list.

I knew both, so that is embarrassing. Fixed both and also added a G to the end of "Food Stomping". It is written as "Stompin'" in quite a few sources though, including Spotify, so it is an easy mistake to make.

By the way:

The Flares - Food Stompin': 7

I don't usually go in for doo-wop, but this one is really good. The interplay between the harmony singers and the heavy voice is a lot of fun and it also lives up to it's title.

I don't know his music, but is was nice seeing him and Cornald Maas flip shit when Duncan Laurence won Eurovision.

Anyhoo, Do They Know It's Christmas is a 5 from me and Fotos y Recuerdos is an 8.

272. Q-Tip – Vivrant Thing 2/10 Nothing to say.
273. The Association – Along Comes Mary 7/10 I like this music and I continue to discovering little wonders like this.
274. The Gun Club – Fire Spirit 6/10
275. Fucked Up – Running On Nothing In a genre I don't understand, this one looks pretty good to me. I like the infinite loop of energy. 6.5/10
276. Tricky – Pumpkin 7.5/10 An excellent song by Tricky, as usual.
277. Jellyfish – The Ghost At Number One Funny mix between Queen and a teenage american rock F.M. band. I don't know if I like the song a lot or hate it. 6/10
278. Wayne Shorter – Speak No Evil Some classical jzz is always welcomed. 6.5/10
279. Jimmy Cliff – You Can Get It If You Really Want I didn't know that version. It's nice, of course. Maybe a little too much sweet. 6/10
280. Selena – Fotos y Recuerdos nice, completely dated pop music. 4/10
281. Leon Else – What I Won’t Do Catchy catchy catchy... but I'm missing a little development. 6/10
282. Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas? Nope! 3/10
283. The Flares – Foot Stomping Es usual. 5/10
284. The Belle Stars – Sign of the Times never heard of them and I must admit it's pretty cool. 7/10

The Belle Stars – Sign of the Times: 7

I didn't know it when I posted it this morning, but turns out I have known this song all my life. It pops up on radio every now and then, but never knew it was called Sign of the Times. In fact, I never knew they sang "This is a sign of the times", I always heard "This is silent times", which - incorrect grammar aside - actually fits even better with "Time to be alone". This is pop as I like it, both catchy, but also a lit idiosyncratic. Perhaps it would get annoying if I was confronted too much with it, but the way I heard it over the years, only sporadically, is just right.

281. Leon Else – What I Won’t Do
6 - I find the style appealing even though it's overdone as hell. All early-2010s music sold over Bandcamp sounded like this
282. Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?
2 - Why this
283. The Flares – Foot Stomping
7 - You know what? This is a foot stomping good time.
284. The Belle Stars – Sign of the Times
4 - Kinda catchy but the vocals really grated on me.
285. Super700 – S.t.t.s.m.c. (Somebody Tried to Steal My Car)
7 - This is not the song I expected based on that name/title. Could be a grower.

Elliott Smith – Christian Brothers

9

(R.I.P. 1969 - Oct 21, 2003) Because Smith was in an early '90s alternative rock band, his shift to quieter music felt like a more natural post-grunge style than all the things being hyped and thrown in my face during the rest of the '90s -- ska, electronica, swing music, Limp Bizkit.

Elliott Smith – Christian Brothers: 5

"So Rob, you listen to all these famous and acclaimed singer/songwriters, so obviously Elliott Smith should be one of your favorite artists, shouldn't he? So why do you never mention him in your list of personal, musical heroes?"

A fine question I have asked myself frequently in the last years, ever since, based on his outstanding reputation, I eagerly dove deeply into his discography, only to emerge mostly as dry as I came in. Sure, this helplessly depressed loner with a sweet voice should be able to touch me. He never did and I think I stated as much every now and then on this forum. This happens some times, that an acclaimed act just doesn't cut it for you, but never has it seemed so unlikely to happen as with Smith. Heck, Spotify recommends him to me on a weekly basis. This should be my guy by any normal standard.

But no. I heard most of his stuff some years ago. He is a frequent part of the Moderately Acclaimed Albums game on this very forum, which made me re-listen to the albums a few more time, hoping against hope that this missing connection would finally come. No luck. I recently heard Heatmiser's Mic City Sons four times for Moderately Acclaimed and I couldn't tell you a damn thing about any song on there afterwards.

However, recently I have at least noticed one thing in him that doesn't work: his vocals. Not so much the musical quality of it, as that is pretty good, but his phrasing doesn't work for me. He end every line, and I mean every quite literally, the same way. Always he slows down during the last word (or sometimes few words) and most of the time he draws out that last word. It makes his singing very repetitive. What's worse, it doesn't fit the genre, at least not the appeal the genre holds for me. Great singer/songwriters to me are basically storytellers and the greats know that every sentence deserves its own reading. It's the main gift of Bob Dylan's vocals and a quality that makes Jacques Brel a compelling orator even if you don't speak his language. You find it in everyone from old masters like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, to modern names like Laura Marling and Sufjan Stevens. No such luck with Smith; it's one vocal trick only.

I hoped that maybe his great lyrics would pull me through in the end as I am a sucker for such things, but again no luck. I just can't seem to focus on his lyrics. I listened to Christian Brothers just now with complete attention, but halfway through the song I noticed my concentration had completely vanished and I was thinking about something different; something that never happens with above mentioned singers. To be fair, what I do get from Smith's lyrics isn't my favorite type of lyrics either. It's more about describing feelings with some table setting, but with little compelling poetry, word play or interesting characterization. It doesn't help his case for me.

What usually stands is his nice playing and the quality of his voice. So goes with Christian Brothers. His songs tend to blend into each other for me and this is no exception. I'm glad he was able to touch many, many people before his untimely end, but I'm sad I can't say he did the same for me. Finally, I feel that I have hit a dead end with listening to him.

Bad Company – Ready for Love: 6

The album this comes from is of course a classic rock classic of the type that has become very unfashionable, but I still like it. However, that is more because of the actual hard rock on it and less for this ballad, even if as these things goes it is still pretty good.

1974 was a key year for me (I was 18 that year). So, faves from that year almost always touch me more than most others.

James – She’s a Star: 7
I only know this band for Laid (the song, not the album), but that is a great one. She's a Star sounds a lot like that one, but I'll be damned if it doesn't work.

Selena - Fotos y Recuerdos 5 Passionately sung but Romain's quite right, time's not treated this track kindly.

Leon Else - What I Won't Do 4 Comes across like Sam Sparro fronting the 1975, it gets too cosy in its linear groove to have an impact on me.

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? 4 We Care a Lot, Slag Aid, They Aren't the World and now I Am Africa, this & We Are the World lend themselves to parodies that are more listenable than the originals. Production-wise, it reminds me there's little that sounds more hollow than when the 80s tried to churn out stately ballads with cavernous drums (see Broken Wings, The Lady in Red, so many others). According to accounts of the time, it sucked any energy the labels had for promoting new artists, making them secondary to reissues of the established acts featured in Band/Live Aid. The sole musical redeeming aspect is the extraordinary vocals of the leads (save Simon LeBon), doing all they can to wring meaning out of the well-intentioned gaucheness of the lyrics.

The Flairs - Woo! Stomping 5 Could make me move in the right company and in the right level of intoxication but doesn't transcend its era or genre.

The Belle Stars - Sign of the Times 6 The band are most famous for chant-like ditties whereby I'm unsure whether I know their version better or the original (The Clapping Song and Iko Iko). This is one of their own and isn't as memorable but still fun while it's spinning. I like the contrast in mood of this song with what their former bandmate in The Bodysnatchers released the same year, namely The Boiler.

Super700 - S.t.t.s.m.c. (Somebody Tried to Steal My Car) 5 Crisp-sounding and with an uncommon subject matter but never gets going for me.

Pernice Brothers - The Ballad of Bjorn Borg 7 This, on the other hand, barely leaves a trace for me lyrically but the mix of chiming guitars and creeping strings pulls me in.

Elliott Smith - Christian Brothers 5 As much as I may look like I'm riding the coattails of Rob, I too haven't yet found anything remarkable about Smith through hearing enough of his songs as part of Heatmiser and solo for something to stand out. I imagine ES is fine once you get to know his music, it's just moving past pleasantries that I'm having trouble with.

Bad Company - Ready for Love 5 Intriguing missing link between Stairway to Heaven and power ballads, edging closer to the directness of message of the latter but still with a light funkiness in the guitar licks. There isn't the outlet of a guitar solo that a similar song made 10 years later would invariably have, which would make it cornier but more guiltily satisfying.

James - She's a Star 8 This doesn't cross my mind too much but the occasional times it's on the radio, I do turn it up. Tim Booth slides in pitch for the hook in an appealing and unforced way, adding to the contentment the song basks in.
As sure as the sun will shine...

One of those curious moments of unlikeliness, but here we are, with the second song in a row from an album with ‘Whiplash’ in it’s title. It also marks the second appearance here of Billy Idol:

290. Billy Idol – To Be a Lover
Year: 1986
Album: Whiplash Smile
Biggest Fan: Live in Phoenix (#161)

Billy Idol – To Be a Lover: 7

Is it just me or is Billy Idol trying to be Elvis here. His voice isn't exactly up to Mr. Presley, but I feel like he is trying. It sounds like in some place in time Elvis might have considered doing this track, but of course he didn't live long enough to hear this one. Only the eighties sound of the backing vocals ruin the suggestion that this is an older track. Regardless, this is a lot of fun.

An embarrassment compared to the William Bell original.
