Albums and Songs of 1988 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Come one, come all to the poll that will celebrate the yellowest decade of them all, the 1980s! :happy-partydance:

What's better than one 8? Two 8s! Let's celebrate all things 1988 in this poll.

Image

A few things remain the same with the decade poll, and a few things will be different.

What will remain the same is that I will ask you to post ranked lists of your favorite albums and songs of each year. Keeping with recent tradition, the top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final, and albums and songs in the 11-20 range will become eligible to be "wildcard" entries. At the end of the 10 yearly polls, the top 50 of the 100 candidates will qualify for the finals based on a new wildcard point system:

Wildcard points = (Yearly points)/(number of ballots)

The biggest change is the point system. Your ranked albums and songs will be assigned points using the following formula:

300/(rank + 2)

Moreover, I will assign points to all of your ranked entries, not only your top 15. Lists must have a minimum of 5 albums and songs to be eligible, but feel free to come up with extended lists if you like - every ranked album and song will receive points!

The deadline for your 1988 lists is 11:59pm forum time on October 31st.

Formatting:

It would be helpful to me if you could use the same delimiter between your rank and the artist as you use to separate the artist from the album/song. Something like 1 | Mylène Farmer | Sans logique works great!

Eligibility:

Any song (including a re-recording of an older song) is eligible if it was released in 1988. I will use the following hierarchy to determine eligibility:

1. AM
2. Discogs/RYM
3. Wikipedia

If you include a song or album you think is questionable, it would help me if you could indicate the source it comes from (album/EP/single).

And we're off!

Regarding "Blue Monday '88", I am going to combine its points with the original 1983 version. That means if you voted for the 1983 version, I won't count a vote for you for "Blue Monday '88".

Didn't "Blue Monday" already qualify for the final poll? It doesn't need the points at that point.

That's right! It qualified for the 1983 poll. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade who held out on voting for it because they prefer the '88 version, though.

I've never tried it, but I will! I'm definitely looking for '88 recommendations as it's of the years I know the least well from the 80s.

Yes, the a cappella of Take 6 was a discovery to me. Great title too! Edie Brickell is one of those two-hit wonders that shouldn't be forgotten.

I can only see 1989 as the release year for this from various sources. Do you have a source that says it is from 1988?
No, you're completely right. My mistake.
Thanks for notifying me.

That one's from 1987! Got any other Mandy Smith-like not-so-obscurities for me to discover from '88? :D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-PYqUHfTMA is my favourite girl voice pop song from 1988 and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46l-yzQ4GhI is my favourite boy voice pop song. I've posted the latter before in here and I can't stop stressing the claim enough that this is the best white guys motown song never to be released in 1966.

edit: and with all respect: NO. Dirty Dancing may be originaaytehrd in 1987 but it was the peak of early 1988 in the end: I remember going to the kino with my friends to watch Harry and the Hendersons in January 1988 and a guy from my class, Jörg, brought his big sister with him and she wouldn't shut up about that flick
