There are a ton of personal favorites for me this week, even though none of these were my nominations. Thankfully, none of my favorites were facing each other, and most of these decisions were pretty straightforward. Giorgio by Moroder, Says, Chorus, and A Little God in My Hands are all in my top 100 songs for the decade, and Still into You and Master Hunter will also feature further down the list.

Still Into You vs. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow
Brennisteinn vs. Master Hunter
Don't Swallow the Cap vs. Giorgio by Moroder
Instant Crush vs. Smooth Sailing
Bring the Noize vs. Says
Rather Be vs. Chorus
White Fire vs. Kong

Paramore - Still Into You < Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow
Would normally vote for Paramore, but the other song is just fantastic. Sweet and positive while also sending a really good message.

Sigur Ros - Brennisteinn > Laura Marling - Master Hunter
Both good, but Brennisteinn is exceptional

The National - Don't Swallow the Cap > Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder
Bad draw for one of my top songs from a favourite album. The whole album affects me a lot, providing a deep representation of melancholy and regret that I identify with.
On the other hand, Giorgio is a stellar musical biopic of a great man's life and work and will likely be a worthy winner of this matchup.

Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas - Instant Crush < Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing
The Queens song is so dangerous-sounding... I like it a lot.

M.I.A. - Bring the Noize < Nils Frahm - Says
Says is just so textured and moving, normally this style doesn't do it for me.

Clean Bandit - Rather Be > Holly Herndon - Chorus
Holly was interesting but I loved the energy in Bandit's song.

Angel Olsen - White Fire < The Notwist - Kong
Never really "got" Angel Olsen. Prefer the Notwist in this matchup.

Swans - A Little God in My Hands > Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All the Way Down
Little God is just such an epic track. Maybe I should finally give the full album a listen...

Paramore - Still Into You vs. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow
Even as the forum's biggest Paramore fan, I absolutely prefer the warm blanket of "Arrow." "Still Into You" mainly shines on the killer hook.

Sigur Ros - Brennisteinn vs. Laura Marling - Master Hunter
This time I was not feeling the Marling. And I found a Sigur Ros song that I really like.

The National - Don't Swallow the Cap vs. Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder
I like "Cap" better than "Terrible Love," but it wasn't enough to top Daft Punk's progressive synth song.

Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas - Instant Crush vs. Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing
I love the vocal melody and production on the hook of "Crush." It's a really great song, apart from Julian Casablancas sounding totally anonymous on the track. "Smooth Sailing" has a funny concept for the video.

M.I.A. - Bring the Noize vs. Nils Frahm - Says
"Bring the Noize" blew my mind when I first heard it, with its constant change-ups of that beat that sounds like a marble clacking onto a glass surface to rest. But that was before I heard Death Grips. Now it sounds a bit annoying. "Says" is even more annoying with its repetitious cycles.

Clean Bandit - Rather Be vs. Holly Herndon - Chorus
I feel bad for not liking Holly Herndon. She has good ideas here, but doesn't seem to know how to execute them in a compelling song. "Rather Be" is a straightforward pop song with decently lavish production design, and a solid performance from usually-intolerable vocalist Jess Glynne.

Angel Olsen - White Fire vs. The Notwist - Kong
I think Olsen is trying way too hard to copy Leonard Cohen, but at least it is not as bland as "Kong."

Swans - A Little God in My Hands vs. Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All the Way Down
Sturgill's view of the world is presented quite beautifully on "Turtles," but you can't beat 2014 Swans. "A Little God" is not one of my preferred tracks on To Be Kind, partly because the very start of it seems to be at odds with the musical intentions of every other track on the album - instead of tension, we have lightheartedness and whimsy. As the song goes on, the tension does finally show up. This doesn't make it a bad song, though, obviously.

13. Paramore - Still Into You
vs.
5. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow

Still Into You is in a pop mode I'm not that fond of, but this one has a real push in the chorus that makes me get along with it anyway. Nice vocals by Hayley Williams too.

But Follow Your Arrow still wins easily. Although for someone from the Netherlands the appeal to smoke a joint (or don't) and kiss whatever gender you like lack even the slightest element of subversion or controversy, it still remains a very appealing, light country song. It's the vocals more than the lyrics that sell it to me. The joy and humor in Musgraves' voice is infectious as hell. Can you believe that later she would start to use autotune? Luckily we weren't there yet in 2013.

12. Sigur Rós - Brennisteinn
vs.
10. Laura Marling - Master Hunter

Brennisteinn is a rather uncharacteristically rumbling song from Sigur Rós, although the whole album is somewhat harder and harsher than the albums that made their name. It is a great album still, but this is not my favorite track. I feel other tracks mix this newfound hardness with the elegantly epic better.

Master Hunter is also uncharacteristically hard for Laura Marling, the closest she came to ever making a rock song. On a similar note it is also the one song from her catalogue that seems to have a hook and be somewhat catchy. That has always been explanation that it is the one critics go for, despite me thinking that much of her output cuts deeper, contains better vocals and has better poetry. That is not to say that Master Hunter is a bad song. It is pretty great still, actually. It has glee and a stomp to die for.

9. The National - Don't Swallow the Cap
vs.
4. Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder

There hardly exists anything by Daft Punk that would make vote them in favor of The National, but what do you know, that minor miracle now happens. From the moment when Moroder opens the song with a personal introduction to his career you know you are in for something special. What we get is a heavy eurodisco track that just reaches for the stratospheres. I'm not even the biggest genre fan in the world, but this one just sweeps me off my feet.

That is not to say that Don't Swallow the Cap is a bad song, although it is perhaps to prototypical The National to stand out in their discography, especially since Trouble Will Find Me has a couple of stronger tracks. Nonetheless, when I give myself to Beringer's voice, the lyrics and the quietly memorable playing I get into that particular National melancholy that I love to wallow myself in.

14. Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas - Instant Crush
vs.
11. Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing

Why would you ask Julian Casablancas to sing on your song only to transform his voice out of all recognition? That is my main take-away from Instant Crush, an otherwise good, but not particularly outstanding cut from Random Access Memory. Not all songs can be Giorgio By Morodor and that's fine.

Smooth Sailing is also not a personal favorite from a band I like, but it delivers better than Instant Crush. I'm just more susceptible for a good rocker.

3. M.I.A. - Bring the Noize
vs.
1. Nils Frahm - Says

The best match-up also contains the two songs of the week that are most different from each other (though the one right below gives it a run for it's money in a way). Bring the Noize should probably be used from now on as the very definition of a banger. It is a electronic pop song of such brutal force that it seems to want to destroy everything in it's path. Beneath the onslaught though is a proud, empowering song that takes the M.I.A. themes and even her persona to an absolute breaking point. I'm not saying what she did afterwards is particularly bad, but it's hard to shake the sense that there was no going beyond this.

Says by Nils Frahm is quite the opposite of the fury of Bring the Noize. It could have been called Bring the Peaze. It is one of the most perfectly realized pieces of tranquility I have ever heard in music. I've listened to it a few times this week and found it calmed me more than almost any song I know. It does actually build up to become grander and louder over time and it isn't quite ambient, but even so there seems to be a feeling of mental rest, like waking up completely refreshed after a long, mentally wearying period. It's a masterpiece and even edges out my own nomination as song of the week.

16. Clean Bandit - Rather Be
vs.
2. Holly Herndon - Chorus

My own nomination goes up to easily the worst song of the week. Rather Be is pop at it's very worst. It takes the infectious violins from Call Me Maybe and... and well, what exactly? It has it's hooks, but they are poorly executed. The whole song signs pasted with cheap glue, into a whole that redefines tackiness for a generation. The first time I heard it on the radio I thought it was quite fun, but after a few times I noticed that the whole thing has a terrible flow. Of course, it became a huge hit and I had to sit through it roughly 200 times before the year was over (note to music nerds; we like to kid ourselves that Get Lucky was the inescapable hit that defined 2013, but note that Rather Be has about 3 times the Spotify streams of Daft Punk's hit). And I know it is only pop and that the lyrics are not it's point, but even so these lyrics are meaningless. It really is just spouting random lines that sound big and meaningful without rhyme or reason. "With every step we take, Kyoto to The Bay /
Strolling so casually / We're different and the same, gave you another name / Switch up the batteries". What connects these lines? Isn't "We staked out on a mission to find our inner peace" just being pretentious and couldn't we just send these people to a concert were Nils Frahm plays Says so that they can end their senseless journey? And whose idea was it to add Jess Glynne's vocals to this nonsense? She can't even match the simple melody here. I know we live in the time of poptimism in which we should like everything because it is a hit and it makes people happy, but as long as lazy efforts like Rather Be exists I want to fight it until the dying of my light. Of course, it's going to win this match-up...

Chorus is on the other hand, is an attempt to reinvent pop music for the new era. With glitches Herndon creates a new type of chorus (yes, the title is well earned). I like how it builds from what is basically a mess to something quite glorious and even catchy. The album it is from, Platform, is somewhat underrated, but for people who like this I would especially point towards this year's Proto were Herndon builds on the achievements of Chorus to new heights. Few songs this decade made me sit up and take notice as much as this one. To me, it really sounded like the music of the future.

6. Angel Olsen - White Fire
vs.
15. The Notwist - Kong

It's been said before, but White Fire almost sounds like some Leonard Cohen outtake, sung by Angel Olsen. It would be an outtake he would be proud of, though, and it is one of the best tracks of that album. Quiet and peaceful if you don't pay attention to the lyrics, but there is a quiet threat in the guitar that won't quite put you at ease. This is the right tone for the lyrics, which hold a curious middle ground between dread and hope, a lust for life that is somehow never at ease with just living. Pretty typical Angel Olsen stuff, as we would later learn. We would also learn there was more to her as the decade went on, but this is already something remarkable.

Kong just passes me by. I like The Notwist somewhat, but this specific song doesn't particularly stick out to me in any way. Don't really have anything to say about it.

8. Swans - A Little God in My Hands
vs.
7. Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All the Way Down

I never heard To Be Kind. For some reason I feel that I need to make that clear, as Swans have quite the reputation here and I feel that they need to be rated more as an album act than as a song one, which means that I feel I need a context for A Little God in My Hands. I don't. Still it works rather well. I only know The Seer and Children of God by Swans, both thanks to the Moderately Acclaimed Album game and both works are etched in my mind as particularly moody and dark guitar music, but this one initially sounds more wacky. Not lighthearted, but as if these guys have admitted a sense of playfulness and fun in their music. Nobody can be gloomy all of the time, right? But as the song progresses things get slightly more dark until it ends up feeling oppressive anyway. Impressive, but it clearly needs more than the obligatory two plays I give every song here.

Turtles All the Way Down is inevitably more straightforward than A Little God in My Hands. Most songs are and certainly country songs, which usually pride themselves in their simplicity. But Sturgill Simpson is not an average country guy (although his voice is almost a stereotype) and he adds musical touches to his song that make it sound richer than the average genre effort, without compromises the straight-forwardness that belongs to the appeal of it. I find it somewhat beautiful in it's clear, understated way and although it is a close match, I feel like voting for it today.

Again, not the best demonstration of Marling's talents, while I was just as unprepared as prosecutorgodot for a Sigur Rós track this thrillingly heavy! Notwist's selection, meanwhile, isn't the best Kong for me in a decade where Neneh Cherry's graceful track exists. A golden top half this week though:

11. Paramore - Still into You v. 12. Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow
2. Sigur Rós - Brennisteinn v. 6. Laura Marling - Master Hunter
10. The National - Don't Swallow the Cap v. 14. Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder
16. Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas - Instant Crush v. 7. Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing
1. M.I.A. - Bring the Noize v. 8. Nils Frahm - Says
3. Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne - Rather Be v. 4. Holly Herndon - Chorus
9. Angel Olsen - White Fire v. 13. The Notwist - Kong

Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow

Laura Marling - Master Hunter

The National - Don't Swallow the Cap

Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing
How do you make a match-up between one of my top 10 albums of the decade and one only to make my bottom 3 if we do a 2010s year by year poll competitive ? By picking my least liked song of the former and one of the few tolerable ones of the latter. But even then, QOTSA wins.

M.I.A. - Bring the Noize

Holly Herndon - Chorus

The Notwist - Kong
Toughest choice of the week, made me want to go back to both artists.

Swans - A Little God in My Hands
I don't really care for Kacey Musgraves and Sturgill Simpson, but they seem like very welcome progressive voices in the country scene.

Tough decision here, but The National's melancholy hits just a bit harder today. Mi dispiace, Giovanni Giorgio!

Sorry, Chilton, your vote was late - I would have counted it if it didn't change any results but it would have caused a tie. Unfortunately, I can't always post the results immediately but I want to make sure there's a firm and known deadline.

Paramore - Still Into You: 5
Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow: 19

Sigur Ros - Brennisteinn: 11
Laura Marling - Master Hunter: 13

The National - Don't Swallow the Cap: 8
Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder: 16

Daft Punk - Instant Crush: 13
Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing: 11

M.I.A. - Bring the Noize: 10
Nils Frahm - Says: 14

Clean Bandit - Rather Be: 12
Holly Herndon - Chorus: 11

Angel Olsen - White Fire: 14
The Notwist - Kong: 10

Swans - A Little God in My Hands: 16
Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All the Way Down: 8

A tie I'd have loved, because:
Clean Bandit - Rather Be: 12
Holly Herndon - Chorus: 11
This has to be my least favorite result in a AM poll ever. And one I understand least.
