My choices

Depeche Mode
Judas Priest
Kraftwerk
Motörhead
T. Rex

Hard choice between Motörhead (more iconic) and Soundgarden (more great songs).

Surprised Whitney isn’t already in.

Since commercial success tends to help to get in the HOF more than critical cred, I call Whitney and the Dave Matthews Band (and probably Thin Lizzy) safe bets.

This seems like a pretty weak group of artists, relative to years past

Great to see Pat B. and Whitney H. among the nominees (Pat's hubby Neil G. is listed with her- yay). Here's my usual rundown of nominees, with their number of nominations and years that they've been eligible. Eight acts who have been eligible in previous years receive their first nod, with Notorious B.I.G. as the only first-year-eligible nominee.

* Pat Benatar- first nomination; 21st year of eligibility
* Dave Matthews Band- first nomination; second year of eligibility
* Depeche Mode- third nomination; 14th year of eligibility
* The Doobie Brothers- first nomination; 24th year of eligibility
* Judas Priest- second nomination; 21st year of eligibility
* Kraftwerk- sixth nomination; 25th year of eligibility
* MC5- fifth nomination; 29th year of eligibility
* Motörhead- first nomination; 18th year of eligibility
* Nine Inch Nails- third nomination; sixth year of eligibility
* Notorious B.I.G.- first nomination; first year of eligibility
* Rufus featuring Chaka Khan- fourth nomination; 22nd year of eligibility
* Soundgarden- first nomination; ninth year of eligibility
* T. Rex- first nomination; 27th year of eligibility
* Thin Lizzy- first nomination; 25th year of eligibility
* Todd Rundgren- second nomination; 25th year of eligibility
* Whitney Houston- first nomination; 11th year of eligibility

Sometimes I just seem to miss something. I thought the Dave Matthews Band were the most unknown band here, but now I learn they were very big. In my lifetime, nonetheless. But I can't mention a single thing they have done, neither do I remember anyone ever talking about them. Weird.

Edit: Ah, I see they had no commercial presence in The Netherlands whatsoever, with no charting singles and an album peaking at #90. That explains things.

I think their only success in France was "The Space Between", they are one of those bands that were huge in the US but pretty small abroad (and they don't have the excuse of playing country adjacent music). I guess that would make them the modern Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers !

My picks would be Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Motörhead, T. Rex and Nine Inch Nails but I guess a most likely list would be Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, DMB, Notorious B.I.G. and Pat Benatar.

That noise we all just heard was Tom Petty rolling in his grave...

All I will say is that here in Chicago where I live, the Dave Matthews Band earned a bit of local infamy for a 2004 incident in which the driver of their tour bus decided to dump 800 pounds of, ahem, waste from the septic tank into the Chicago River...just as a sightseeing boat full of tourists was passing by. So, DMB did to Chicago literally what they've been doing metaphorically to everyone else for years.

I have to agree with Harold there. Tom Petty was more well-respected than Dave Matthews ever was. And at least a bit more famous around these parts as well - as I already said somewhere, my father listened to some of his stuff. I think he got acquainted with his music thanks to the Traveling Wilburys album.

Tbh the only three I like are Biggie, Todd Rundgren, and Kraftwerk. Hip Hop needs to be more represented in the HOF also, but I guess it's not a surprise, considering that the dudes who run this are the perfect example of the stereotypical rock fan who's local classic rock station is the only thing they listen to. I mean like seriously, the Dave Matthews Band? Come on bruh.

Who I voted for:

Depeche Mode
Kraftwerk
Nine Inch Nails
Soundgarden
T. Rex

Who I think will win:

Dave Matthews Band
Whitney Houston
Kraftwerk
Motorhead (If they have 6 inductees.)
The Notorious B.I.G.
Soundgarden

I'd imagine Dave Matthews Band would win the poll since they came in 4th for the year-round poll at actual HOF (Motley Crue was #1, Blink-182 #2, and Iron Maiden #3).

I am gonna listen to the most acclaimed song by each act and rate them.

Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching - 5 (pretty good)
Motörhead - Ace of Spades - 4 (okay)
Nine Inch Nails - Closer - 4 (okay)
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun - 3 (not very good)

I am not surprised that the best song to me was by the least acclaimed act of the four. And I guess the most mainstream.

Surprised you didn't like Black Hole Sun. It's one of my favorite "alternative" songs of all time, but I figured you'd have enjoyed it given the Beatle-esque vibe of the track. Imo it's the Nine Inch Nails who have to rank as overrated (Where's Brent DiCrescenzo when you need him???).

I don't think I like any alternative acts much. Seems to be a lot of monotone singing and very few hooks. As for your Beatles comp, I guess it sounds a bit like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," but that's not exactly one of my favorites from the Beatles. I prefer the early (1962-1965) Beatles to the later stuff (1966-1970).

Someone on Twitter pointed out that the list of artists who became eligible for nomination who weren't nominated this year would make a strong inductee class on their own.

"Artists who became Rock Hall eligible for the first time this year but weren’t nominated include Oasis, Weezer, Aaliyah, Daft Punk, Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, and Wilco."

Honestly what the hell. I’ve been a Depeche Mode fanatic for a long time and they are holding back of putting them in the Hall for so long. I personally feel they are the greatest band of all time and it’s a disgrace Bon Jovi got in before them. I’m glad The Cure got in last year and Green Day a few years back, but damn are they taking too long with this one.

Man it is straight up crazy that Judas Priest and Motorhead aren't already in, and to a lesser extent Thin Lizzy and T. Rex. All classic rock radio staples! These are all artists I would have assumed got in a long time ago.

If those 4 were in, 4 others would have to be out. Which 4 inductees would you remove to put these 4 in?

I thought you'd have something to say about this ;) But you're right- if the HoF is supposed to recognise influence, DM should've been inducted long ago, Kraftwerk even further back.

Deserved inductees imo:
Kraftwerk
MC5
Depeche Mode
The Notorious B.I.G.
Whitney Houston (influential regardless of what you think of her music)

My choices:
Biggie
T. Rex
Nine Inch Nails
Motörhead
Kraftwerk (again, mainly due to their impact on other acts)
All I got inside is vacancy!

I picked Depeche Mode, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, T. Rex.

I thought that Kraftwerk was the Susan Lucci of the HOF, but it's Chic (11 nominations).

Miles Davis isn't rock either (nor are the hip hop acts), but he's inducted. I see no reason why Coltrane and Sinatra especially aren't in the Hall.

I think it's because Miles dabbled a bit in jazz-rock crossovers like "Bitches Brew," while the other two were known rock haters.

I've never understood why there is such a lack of jazz and country in the HOF. Hopefully that changes this year.

Oh yeah go Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Biggie. :music-rockon:

Not a group that jumps out as particularly strong. Almost all of the candidates are in the "yeah, I could see them being worthy" camp for me. There are a few I wholeheartedly support (Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, T. Rex), one I oppose with every fiber of my being (Dave Matthews Band), and the rest I don't care too much one way or the other.

Lol, could you elaborate, Moonbeam? I just see them as pretty bland with a couple of catchy songs. The biggest reason I have not to like them is that they seem to appeal most to my friends who don't really care or know anything about music.

This is just me, but Dave Matthews’ voice is like ten thousand nails on ten thousand chalkboards. A dying cat sounds better.

DMB is a bizarre choice when so many great alternative bands get passed over. He has a handful of good singles. But basically he’s the poster boy for 90s vanilla rock.

I’m surprised OutKast isn’t a first balloter too considering Hey Ya, Ms Jackson, etc. I guess rap acts need to sing about either violence or their own greatness to get recognition?

The unrelenting rootsy blandness and the cloying angst, coupled with Dave's irrepressibly whiny voice. A quote from this article captures it pretty well.

"Dave Matthews Band is one of the most self-serious music groups ever to exist. Their entire reputation was built off of being able to convince their teen and 20-something fans that their particular problems were the most consuming to have ever existed. Heartbreak was poetry, and their poetry was nonsense."

The only reason i ever heard of Dave Matthews was because of the Chicago tour bus incident - as far as i can tell he has no following whatsoever in the UK. (Although in my opinion, having given his AM tracks a listen, Crash Into Me is a pretty good 90s pop song, i find every other song of his that i've heard irritating beyond belief)

My predictions:
The Notorious B.I.G. (2Pac was inducted in his 1st year of eligibility, why not Biggie?)
Soundgarden (Nirvana & Pearl Jam had no problem getting in after being nominated and the relatively recent passing of Chris Cornell will push some votes)
Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor gained points with his induction of the Cure last year and NIN is hugely influential)
Depeche Mode (inducting NIN but not DM just won't feel right)
Pat Benatar (fan votes)

Whether we like it or not, a useful reminder for people following Pitchfork's school of music criticism that the majority of the population listening to rock music nowadays actually listens to classic rock. Remember that music subcultures work as echo chambers.

It WAS to honor the most significant figures in the music's history, but after the first 10 years or so it became more about the people running it's own personal way to justify their tastes.

I don't think that's true here in the USA. It may be true in other parts of the world.

I guess it also depends on how you classify “classic rock”. Where I live, the local classic rock radio station plays rock music made between the late 1960s to the mid 1990s (say, 1967 to 1994). Someone might scoff at the idea that a song from 1994 can be classic rock, but that’s 25 years ago! If 25 years isn’t enough time for a song to warrant classic status then what is?

So yeah, under the definition that “classic rock” extends from the 1960s to the mid 1990s, I would certainly say that it’s the most popular form of rock in the US at this moment. But only because of the sheer amount of time and sheer amount of disparate artists (everything from The Beatles to Guns N’ Roses to Nirvana to Led Zeppelin to Red Hot Chili Peppers to R.E.M. to Pink Floyd) that this term encompasses.

The most popular form of rock at this moment is Hip Hop.

Classic Rock Radio is essentially just White Guys With Guitars (and Hendrix). They don't play ANY black styles of rock at all, not even Stevie Wonder or Prince. It's a sham.
