POLL: Greatest Punk Bands of All Time

Post by Edre Depeche Head »

The punk sub genre has been my favorite genre for a long time. My favorite era may be the 90s but I want to see what other people think. The point system is not yet decided on but here are the rules so far

RULES

- Iwant you to post one main list and then an OPTIONAL Top 10-15 for different eras (70s, 80s, 90s, 21st Century).

- 15 artists is the Minimum for the all time list while 75 is the Maximum for the all time list.

- For the decade section, THIS IS OPTIONAL there will be a minimum of 10 artists and a maximum of 15.

- To illustrate me point, I will post my list in the comments.

- I do not care what is considered punk or not! If it falls in any of these sub genres (Classic Punk, Hardcore Punk, Post Hardcore, Skate Punk, Ska Punk, Pop Punk, Emo Pop Punk, or Garage Punk) you should be fine but most exceptions should be okay as well. Any concerns you can just message me. I recommend staying away from grey areas such as Grunge or Porto Punk but it shouldn’t be a major problem.

Enjoy! I would love to see punk get some love over here

So, holy crap, we're not worthy, could you lower the all-time minimum to like 20 (and I listened to a pretty good amount of punk in my younger years)?

Actually scratch that I can just draw from my All-Time Artists list I did for our other poll earlier this year so it probably won’t take too long! :D

I have a love-hate relationship with punk, but i've always been a huge fan of 1960s garage rock (proto-punk, as many put it), which is seen as the forerunner of punk. If I made a list, i'd probably rank bands like The Velvet Underground, Stooges, and Monks highly. I'd also argue that those bands share many characteristics of what could be "considered" punk. Will those bands be eligible?

I won't contribute, not out of disinterest, but because I don't have the time. A few resources for people who might be too shy:

Christian Eudeline's 100 cult punk albums
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5888#p91306

The last list featured in this batch of Camion Blanc books covers extensively the 1976-1978 punk period (search for keywords "The punk movement 1976-1978" in the thread):
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5095

And Rock Hard's metaltheque has a healthy selection of hardcore punk acts featured (search for keyword "hardcore"):

I also threw in what I'd consider the band's primary or qualifying recording.

All-Time
1. The Sex Pistols (Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols)
2. The Clash (London Calling)
3. Ramones (Ramones)
4. Patti Smith / The Patti Smith Group (Horses)
5. Gang of Four (Entertainment!)
6. Hüsker Dü (Zen Arcade)
7. Meat Puppets (Meat Puppets II)
8. Sleater-Kinney (Dig Me Out)
9. Green Day (Dookie)
10. The Buzzcocks (Singles Going Steady)
11. Germs ([M.I.A.] The Complete Anthology)
12. Siouxsie and The Banshees (The Scream)
13. The Stranglers (Rattus Norvegicus)
14. X (Wild Gift)
15. The Slits (Cut)
16. The Descendents (Milo Goes to College)
17. Minutemen (Double Nickels on the Dime)
18. Wire (Pink Flag)
19. Dead Kennedys (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables)
20. The Damned (Damned Damned Damned)
21. The Consumers (All My Friends Are Dead)
22. X-Ray Spex (Germfree Adolescents)
23. The Offspring (e.g., Smash)
24. Crass (The Feeding of the 5000)
25. Minor Threat (Complete Discography)

1970s
1. The Sex Pistols
2. The Clash
3. Ramones
4. Patti Smith / The Patti Smith Group
5. Gang of Four
6. The Buzzcocks
7. Siouxsie and The Banshees
8. The Stranglers
9. The Slits
10. Wire

If I had included the Stooges, they'd be after the Ramones; and the New York Dolls would maybe be after the Stranglers. I've heard a LOT of odd things called punk rock (Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, Captain Beefheart, Public Enemy), but I tried to ignore this line of thinking...though isn't Sleater-Kinney grunge? Sigh. I didn't think Television qualified in terms of sonics or attitude.

Don't know about the other examples, but Sleater-Kinney is definitely considered punk.

This is some undertaking for the pollster and the voters but I'll give it my best shot!

To keep to the spirit of '76, I'm being stricter with my 70s choices than the rest of the ballot, meaning that some of the era's bands closest to my heart (The Jam and The Attractions among many more) don't make the cut.

That's just me though, I'm not going to question the punk credentials of anyone else's choices, not least since there'll be some out there who think my #1 don't count as punk for selling out to CBS and Levi's!

Also, my support of some of the below bands will be fairly shallow (i.e. I only like a few of their songs), even while I have a deep love for the uppermost bands.

Anyway, 1-2-3-4! :music-guitarred:

70s
1. The Clash
2. Wire
3. Buzzcocks
4. X-Ray Spex
5. The Sex Pistols
6. The Undertones
7. Suicide
8. Ramones
9. The Ruts
10. Stiff Little Fingers

80s
1. Dead Kennedys
2. Big Black
3. Die Toten Hosen
4. Minor Threat
5. Bad Brains
6. Mission of Burma
7. Black Flag
8. Discharge
9. Agnostic Front
10. Suicidal Tendencies
(Most of the above could easily be classed in another genre but particularly unsure if Big Black & MoB still can be classed as punk)

90s
1. Ash
2. Green Day
3. Die Toten Hosen
4. The Offspring
5. Fugazi
6. Rancid
7. Sleater-Kinney
8. Die Ärzte (not consistently punk but Schrei nach Liebe is easily one of my most listened-to punk songs)
9. Sublime (again, not always punk I know)
10. Anti-Flag

21st Century
1. Gogol Bordello
2. Green Day
3. Against Me!
4. Sleater-Kinney
5. Ash
6. Frank Turner (not a band, not always punk, still.. )
7. Slaves
8. Amyl and the Sniffers
9. Dream Wife
10. Idles

All-time
1. The Clash
2-50. To be completed soon!
All I got inside is vacancy!

Personally I feel like the 60s is relatively ruled out of the running due to the more apparent differences and the era difference. That being said I won’t object.

I was raised on early 2000s pop-punk, so that dominates my list. I don't like enough pure punk to make a list out of that, so plenty of these are fringe cases... feel free to shoot them down if you don't think they belong. And then I'll make my decade lists. Once I looked through my main list and got all the way down to Smash Mouth, I knew I needed to stop.

I agree with vast majority of this and it is nice to see this era represented. May I ask, despite being a huge fan, besides astetic and personality, why is Billie Eilish punk?

I literally just searched "punk" on the wikipedia page for anyone who I thought might be considered punk.

The New Yorker apparently thinks Grimes is too punk to be a pop star https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015 ... or-misfits

Punk actually isn't mentioned for Billie Eilish, and it really was more for her aesthetic and personality... you can take them both off the list.

All-time List - for bands that grew out of punk, I tried to rate them based on their music that would fit the category (or else bands like the Replacements would rank higher). As far as "Proto-punk" goes, I went with the criteria that if the band had released their work today, would it be considered "punk" - with that I figured Stooges, MC5, NY Dolls, and Sonics all met the criteria. I was undecided about how The Velvet Underground would fit so I left them out. If included, they would be #4.

1. The Clash
2, The Ramones
3. The Stooges
4. Joy Division
5. Wire
6. Fugazi

Hard to know where to put the demarcation line, so I used the web site "isthisbandpunk" for arbritration. Unfortunately their database is not that big, so some bands below were not included ; if they had more bands included, Violent Femmes might have ended up out.

1) Fugazi
2) Wire
3) Minor Threat
4) The Stooges
5) Sleater-Kinney
6) Millencolin
7) Gang of Four
8) The Hives
9) X
10) Drive Like Jehu
11) Violent Femmes
12) Buzzcocks
13) Mano Negra
14) PUP
15) The Clash
16) Rancid
17) Jawbox
18) Dead Kennedys
19) (pre-Travis) Blink-182
20) Refused
21) Big Black
22) Magazine
23) Reagan Youth
24) Minutemen
25) The Damned
26) The Suicide Machines
27) The Offspring
28) The Au Pairs
29) The Dead Milkmen
30) The Descendents

Sleater-Kinney is my favorite of those bands, but I think that top 4 fits the "punk" bill a bit more.

5 bands eliminated by isthisbandpunk that I really thought about including :
Meat Puppets
The Jesus Lizard
Japandroids
Thrice
The Thermals

The Thermals especially are pretty punk imo. Also surprised they don't consider Fucked Up to be punk.

Regarding names above : there is no way Incubus could be considered punk ! Also wouldn't really include Rage Against the Machine (despite their ethos), My Chemical Romance (emo for sure), Panic! at the Disco (same) or Faith No More.

That's fine, you can take them off mine. I like Thrice better than all the bands I listed, but they veered away from punk pretty quickly and haven't been anything resembling punk for a long time.

Kind of too little too late with the deadline but the grey area about proto punk for me was Television. A band labeled proto punk who’s debut album was released a year after the first actual punk bands debut? Never understood that logic.

I literally just got into Titus Andronicus for the first time in the past few weeks and now I'm seeing them live tomorrow night!
