2010s Song Recommendations

Post by PlasticRam »

I haven't really kept up with the songs of the 2010s aside from Kanye. Even the most acclaimed songs might be new to me, so I'd appreciate if you can come up with some recommendations and of course this thread is for other people too to get recs.

Sorry if there's an existing thread for this. Couldn't find it.

Leonard Cohen - Treaty
https://youtu.be/NU5FPAR7ass
I'd call this the emotional highlight of the album. (It also appears twice, in different versions.) I interpret it as Cohen, at the end of his life, unable to reconcile himself with God.

Bob Dylan - All the Way
https://youtu.be/zPuyT6EtRQ0
Dylan performing Sinatra songs sounds like a perfectly horrendous idea, but I'd argue that he steals one from Frank here. I also recommend "Roll on John," a tribute to John Lennon, his last song (deliberately?) from probably his last album of original songs, though I don't see the correct version on YouTube.

Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High)
https://youtu.be/oh2LWWORoiM
On the so-called alternative rock station here locally, this was an easy highlight, and even a crossover hit. It's on the AM main page, but scraping the bottom of the song list.

Grouper - Headache
A Grouper single (EP?) of two tracks that might slip under the radar, so thought I'd bring it to the forum's attention. Absolutely gorgeous work here.

50 songs this decade that may have slipped under the radar (the artist choices might be obvious but hopefully not the tracks themselves):

2010
Akala - Find No Enemy https://bit.ly/2PXEzkG Guitar-backed political rap
Joe Pug - Not So Sure https://bit.ly/2K0q0ZN Stark, regretful Americana
Bonobo feat. Andreya Triana - Stay the Same https://bit.ly/2X19qhN Bittersweet 'acoustic electronica'
Gogol Bordello - Pala Tute https://bit.ly/2p0qFDn Folkier in lyrics and music than their usual 'immigrant punk'
Tracey Thorn - Why Does the Wind? https://bit.ly/2Q10eZy Produced by Hot Chip's Al Doyle, this low-key synth pop sees Thorn express doubt like no one since Dusty Springfield

2011
The Black Keys - Nova Baby https://bit.ly/2rrxn6m Everyone knows this album but this track's more anthemic than its more acclaimed selections imo
Tom Waits - New Year's Eve https://bit.ly/2PZStTB Only Waits can build a song from Auld Lang Syne and make it still feel meaningful
The Go! Team - Apollo Throwdown https://bit.ly/33HPRgU Relentless multi-coloured dance-pop confection that is much better than that description sounds
Immortal Technique feat. Killer Mike, Brother Ali & Chuck D - Civil War https://bit.ly/36NfLSv Tec's conspiracy-heavy style isn't for everyone (and had its heyday last decade) but he's still entertaining regardless of politics and everyone's on form on this posse cut
Laura Marling - The Muse https://bit.ly/2pLOoI2 Jazzy dismissal of the idea of having a muse

2012
Enter Shikari - Arguing with Thermometers https://bit.ly/36H1bvX Not critics' darlings but they have no qualms with switching up their sound for cheap thrills
Azealia Banks - Liquorice https://bit.ly/33xwVkW She's not just about 212! OK, this is more of the same hip-house but hits the spot
Burial - Kindred https://bit.ly/2NU0V41 Atmospheric but danceable, best of the EP of the same name for my money
Paul Keegan - Tie a Rope https://bit.ly/32u5Eid Sort of cheating as this guy was my flatmate- this song's better live but Crowded House songwriting with Automatic for the People production going on here
Everything Everything - Cough Cough https://bit.ly/34I9mGh Not usually a fan of them but this is some hyper-kinetic post-punk with Brazilian rhythms

2013
Pusha T - King Push https://bit.ly/2qAtDix The commercial tracks on My Name Is My Name don't work; no risk of that here, this goes in hard
Chronixx - Here Comes Trouble https://bit.ly/2WXh2BQ Sweetly sung reggae with a slight edge to the melody
Foals - Milk & Black Spiders https://bit.ly/32rSUbL Halfway between their keyboard-led pop singles of the time and their more brooding slow-burners
Arcade Fire - Here Comes the Night Time https://bit.ly/34MZNpU Their tendency to change tempo and key transposed in a dance setting
Janelle Monàe - Victory https://bit.ly/33yuHCa As above, a well-known album but a perhaps less fêted song; one of her strongest vocals

2014
Kate Tempest - Marshall Law https://bit.ly/2K3fuRO Not the first time I've said this but track of the decade for me; spoken word/rap character study of desperation
Benin City - Bus (Live) https://bit.ly/2Q2gSaY Just a fun and real pop song about reminiscing about a night-out; a rare male-female-led track where they're just mates, rather than potential lovers. The more polished studio version: https://bit.ly/32tthY7
Girl Band - De Bom Bom https://bit.ly/2pLtkBu Metronomic rhythm, howling vocals, great experimental rock
Sleaford Mods - Tweet Tweet Tweet https://bit.ly/2ru1Fpb Not the most consistent band, even if they are from my hometown, but this makes sense of their Mark E Smith with cheap synths sound
Moon Hooch - St. Louis https://bit.ly/36NzKjZ An early(ish) example of the 'space-jazz' (for want of a better term) currently plied by Kamasi, Kemet et al

2015
Jill Scott - Closure https://bit.ly/2NSabWp The music echoes Superstition and Celebration but the vocal performance is strutting and hilarious
Lizzo - Ride https://bit.ly/32vBkDZ Again, funny and soulful, Lizzo's best song in my view
Mbongwana Star - Shégué https://bit.ly/33vMXvX Song based in African sounds but with Western electronics, like the rest of the fine album
Oddisee - That's Love https://bit.ly/2qD8FPO Old-school soul backing but with a quickfire flow and a voice resembling Andre 3000's at times
Kano - Hail https://bit.ly/2NZ4lCu He's made one of the key UK hip-hop albums this year but this is pure grime from Kano, he keeps improving whatever the genre

2016
The Comet Is Coming - Space Carnival https://bit.ly/32veqMT The jazz collective at their raviest
THEY. - What You Want https://bit.ly/32yp45s Slightly sleazy, really infectious rock-influenced RnB
Devendra Banhart - Fig in Leather https://bit.ly/32qbXmQ Purposely sleazy send-up of male flirting
Conor Oberst - Barbary Coast (Later) https://bit.ly/34KFgC9 Enjoyably morose overanalysis that Bright Eyes fans have come to expect
Little Simz - Doorways + Trust Issues https://bit.ly/2PXI1Ml More neo-soul than her latest output but showing her versatility with flows and musical styles

2017
Songhoy Blues feat. Elf Kid - Mali Nord https://bit.ly/33xUOcn Horn-led Afrobeat with English rap
Protoje - Blood Money https://bit.ly/2Nx0Sw4 State-of-the-(JA)-nation reggae
Bicep - Vale https://bit.ly/2qyhOJI Understated but insistent 'ambient house'
Dizzee Rascal - Space https://bit.ly/2NvoT6x Best thing he's done in my opinion, insane flow
Childcare - Getting Over You (By Dressing Up Like You) https://bit.ly/33H6wl7 Quirky indie-pop breakup song

2018
Cadet - Closure https://bit.ly/2Q2O8PE Grime storytelling tour-de-force
HTRK - Mentions https://bit.ly/2NXZFN9 Like a cross between James Blake and The XX
Juniore - Panique https://bit.ly/34Jc2ne On-edge French post-punk/spy-film soundtrack
Swindle feat. Kojey Radical - Coming Home https://bit.ly/2Q2OXbc Genuinely think Kojey will be the Kendrick of the UK scene when he releases a consistently great album- similarly straddles that line between 'woke' and 'street' (don't like these labels any more than anyone else but you know what I mean)
Goat - Let It Burn https://bit.ly/2Kc0Nfj Like a shamanic Black Sabbath

2019
Yizzy - 3 Minutes to Live https://bit.ly/2NUiJMj Grime first-person-view of a stabbing, about the only redeeming feature of his album
Connie Constance - I Want Out https://bit.ly/34OILaR Similar voice to Nilüfer Yanya and Marika Hackman, also just as willing to experiment; mouthy pop with dubby production flourishes
Lowkey - The Return of Lowkey https://bit.ly/2Q1obzL Revered underground UK rapper comes out of hiding with most accessible track yet
Koffee feat. Jane Macgizmo - Blazin' https://bit.ly/2qDsgPQ Reggae goes electro-pop
Fold feat. MC Motormouf - Stronger than the Evils https://bit.ly/2Q4bm7Q Current jazz-fusion but more samples and rapping than their contemporaries; saw these supporting Ibibio Sound Machine and had to buy the album
All I got inside is vacancy!
