LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep? > Post Malone ft. 21 Savage - Rockstar
I find the LCD song particularly gorgeous. Really don't care for Post.

Amen Dunes - Miki Dora > U.S. Girls - Rosebud
Winning song here was a huge surprise, really enjoyed it.

Parquet Courts - Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience > King Princess - 1950
Start a Fight was my introduction to Parquet Courts last year, I'm a big fan of the double song. Sad to vote against King Princess, I liked that track too.

Let's Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me > Sunflower Bean - Twentytwo
Grandma has a kind of Lorde sound I enjoy.

Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury < Parquet Courts - Freebird II
Again, Parquet Courts are doing it for me.

The Internet - Come Over < Lizzo - Boys
BOYYYS. Internet had no chance against Lizzo.

Christine & The Queens - Doesn't Matter > Ariana Grande - God is a Woman
God is a Woman? It doesn't matter.

Robyn - Ever Again < Carly Rae Jepsen - Party for One
Both great, but Party for One is just such fun.

For this final group, I had heard most of the songs before. Another week where I didn't have any major problems with the songs; however, the songs are more okay than actually good. To me, a couple songs here are proof that there is no difference between mainstream and indie music now. Like last week, there were a lot of tough matches.

LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep? vs. Post Malone ft. 21 Savage - Rockstar
"Rockstar" is impressively written, and has grown on me over time. However, the instrumental on "Sleep?" is unbeatable, even if it kinda sounds like "Inspector Norse." No comment on the lyrics though, because they are submerged to unintelligibility.

Amen Dunes - Miki Dora vs. U.S. Girls - Rosebud
Another tough match, but I had to go with U.S. Girls because her voice is to die for.

Parquet Courts - Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience vs. King Princess - 1950
"1950" has some nice vocals, but this is one of those "mainstream indie" songs that feels too generic. I'm going with PC's fun throwback.

Let's Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me vs. Sunflower Bean - Twentytwo
Could go either way.

Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury vs. Parquet Courts - Freebird II
Evenly matched, but I'll go with the overlooked genre.

The Internet - Come Over vs. Lizzo - Boys
The Internet are getting more interesting, it seems, but it's not enough. The "Boys" instrumental is minimal, but every part hits, and that to me is much better than a complexly layered song where you can't hear anything.

pass on 7th - unfair matchup

Robyn - Ever Again vs. Carly Rae Jepsen - Party for One
"Party for One" is too catchy.

Favorite discovery: "Doesn't Matter (voleur de soleil)"

Why? I fucking hate when people say shit like that with no explanation. Not everyone who uses auto tune is trash. At this point it is an artistic choice like any vocal effects in the past or like any guitar effects. It’s one thing if you don’t like the music but it is shitty to hate a whole stylistic choice.

Post Malone - Rockstar.

The best one on the list today without a doubt.

It is a song that grows. Both Post and Savage deliver great verses and it has one of the best hooks of a pop rap song of the last few years. This song made me take a Post much more seriously and following the release of Beerbongs & Bentleys and Hollywood’s Bleeding he has made it clear to me that he is my favorite artist of this decade. And Rockstar is a great example of his expertise at the pop rap formula while incorporating other genres in his music.

As for LCD, I like the music but as an overall artist I’m not as interested in him and the music is ok but not my style

Very solid group of nominees to close out the first round. It's stunning none of these are ranked highly enough to be eligible.

LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep? vs. Post Malone ft. 21 Savage - Rockstar
Amen Dunes - Miki Dora vs. U.S. Girls - Rosebud
Parquet Courts - Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience
vs. King Princess - 1950
Let's Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me vs. Sunflower Bean - Twentytwo

Falling Into Me is my favorite of this week's nominees and one of my favorites in the entire bracket. It's incredible how many interesting and creative ideas the song packs into a sub-six minute run time, and its opening line ("I pave the backstreet with the mist of my brain") is one of my favorites in years.

Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury vs. Parquet Courts - Freebird II

From the first five seconds of the first time I heard it, I knew Fists of Fury was a great song.

The Internet - Come Over vs. Lizzo - Boys
Christine & The Queens - Doesn't Matter vs. Ariana Grande - God is a Woman
Robyn - Ever Again vs. Carly Rae Jepsen - Party for One

We end with the most poor week of this game. The ones I rank as the last four are particularly weak.

9. LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep?
vs.
16. Post Malone ft. 21 Savage - Rockstar

How Do you Sleep? is solid, but I feel there are better LCD Soundsystem tracks out there, also on American Dream. Musically it is pretty great, but I felt more with a lot of their other songs.
Rockstar is awful. From the autotune that makes both artists sound like robotic mosquitoes to the generic production, there is nothing of value here and it might be the worst song in the whole tournament for me. Worst are the lyrics which are dime a dozen, but with less creativity or detail of better examples (and outside of The Notorious B.I.G. I haven't cared much for the better examples either). There is something juvenile about the whole thing. It feels like a twelve year old boys idea of a grown-up man's life, where you think you look like an adult when carrying an uzi, think you'll be happy when you constantly use drugs and have come to sexual awakening but still have to learn that women are actually individual people too. This truly is the Rockstar for this new generation (I refer here to the Nickelback song and it is fitting I don't have to change the song title).

7. Amen Dunes - Miki Dora
vs.
5. U.S. Girls - Rosebud

I didn't get the buzz for Amen Dunes' album last year, but this is a good song. Still, I did get A Poem Unlimited (an amazing album fated to badly on end-of-decade lists) and this wasn't even among the biggest standouts here. Regardless, there is so much sense of rhythm and language in Rosebud and the singing is so good I find it an easy vote.

3. Parquet Courts - Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience
vs.
13. King Princess - 1950

Parquet Courts are my jam and this is probably my favorite song from Wide Awake. Love the match-up between two tracks and the jubilant ramshackle nature of the instruments. A lot of fun.
1950 is just a song that exists for me. Nothing to say about it, good or bad; though that in itself is more a bad than a good sign.

8. Let's Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me
vs.
2. Sunflower Bean - Twentytwo

I liked Let's Eat Grandma's album, but this wasn't my first choice as a song. It is indeed ambitious with many things going on and it does add up to something good. So while it is a fine song for some reason I can't quite explain it just doesn't grab me particularly.
Believe it or not, Twentytwo is a highlight of the week for me and one of the best discoveries of the game. I know it is not the most original thing in the world, but something about the melody and how it develops just gets to me. That happens sometimes, when a certain sound seems to awake something unconscious and I can't explain what it is.

1. Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury
vs.
4. Parquet Courts - Freebird II

Fists of Fury is an obvious masterpiece for me; an immediate hit. I love the way this song mixes jazz with an almost cheesy b-movie tune. It is epic, it is glorious, it makes me want to fight the bad guys. Woohoo!
The link between Freebird II and the original Lynyrd Skynyrd song is thin, but this is another good ramshackle song by Parquet Courts. Reminds me a bit of their masterpiece Human Performance at the starts, but becomes something of a bar sing-along in the end. Good, good fun.

11. The Internet - Come Over
vs.
6. Lizzo - Boys

Come Over sounds very much like it comes from the 1990's. Never the type of song I went for in the day or now, but since I was a kid then there is something nostalgic about a song that sounds so much from the time. I rarely see the point of these type of throwbacks, but at least it is well done.
Boys is a 2018 from 2019 album, so there is that. I haven't listened to Lizzo all that much, but she gives me the type of pop that I actually do like (warning, the four songs that follow don't get the same appreciation). She isn't just upbeat, but jubilant, ecstatic and filled with love. Forget about boys, she the girl!

10. Christine & The Queens - Doesn't Matter
vs.
14. Ariana Grande - God is a Woman

Doesn't Matter has a great, rhythmic flow, which I can better appreciate in the French version. My French is very poor, but I have noted that Christine just sounds far better, more at ease in English, although this specific song retains the English language in the chorus of the French version, sadly. It is not a particular original song, but it is does have a light appeal.
Ariana Grande, though, I hear nothing remarkable here. No, the 'God is a Woman' line is not invented by her and she does nothing with anyway. Thank you, next.

15. Robyn - Ever Again
vs.
12. Carly Rae Jepsen - Party for One

I am happy for people who get something out of Robyn. She seems to really get to people and I appreciate that. But for me, I have no clue what it is. All her songs sound like they could have been made by any pop artist from 1980 onward. There isn't an original tune, lyric, vocal moment (she has an indistinguishable voice for me) or anything else that suggests personality in there for me. Sure, Ever Again is slightly catchy, but in a world were we have access to thousands of more catchy songs I have no reason to pick this one. Harsh, unpopular take: not counting her collaboration with Röysköpp she exhausted all she had to say after Dancing On My Own.
Party for One is also not the thing that lights up my world, but at least Jepsen has a delivery that seems ecstatic in a very cute way that is all her own. It makes the hooks so much stronger. She's no Lizzo and my poptimism has limits, but this one is fine.

It's a shame that most of you seem to think 1950 is generic. I particularly love the bridge. It starts with a beautiful melody, adds a great ascending bassline, a nice harmony, and ends with a crescendo on a repeating leading tone, all elements that work really well for me and are not present in songs I consider generic.

A varied week but one that has two songs featuring in my respective top 10 for that year, see if you can work out what they are:

LCD Soundsystem - How Do You Sleep? v. Post Malone feat. 21 Savage - Rockstar Never imagined I'd vote for both LCD tracks but this warrants my choice, maintaining a grippingly brooding atmosphere, not their usual dance through the hurt. I feel bad for persuading you to nominate Rockstar, Edre- obviously not eligible but Circles is a better use of Posty's talents for me.

Amen Dunes - Miki Dora v. U. S. Girls - Rosebud Each song occupies its own little world but I'd rather spend more time in Dunes'.

Parquet Courts - Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience v. King Princess - 1950 The 2010s' equivalent of Take Me Out in my mind, Almost..seems to follow a coherent narrative thread of misdirected aggravation with modern life, despite its disjointed nature. Punchy, relentless, I bought the album on the strength of it. 1950 would've bumped Cheap Queen a few places higher on my album list this year, it's an endearing love song but doesn't move mountains for me musically.

Let's Eat Grandma - Falling into Me v. Sunflower Bean - Twentytwo Hardest match-up for me; Hot Pink was one of at least 5 other 2018 tracks I considered nominating, while Crisis Fest was at the time my #3 for last year. Falling into Me drifts off a tad but has a fantastic oscillating bassline. Although I have to face up to Twentytwo having gauche lyrics, the reverb on the vocals and delay on the guitar make becoming an adult sound achingly bittersweet here.

Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury v. Parquet Courts - Freebird II Fists of Fury is a tuneful homage to Blaxploitation soundtracks with a relevant message that doesn't try too hard to be political. The title of Freebird II started as a joke but the result is A. Savage's coming to terms with his upbringing by his mum and reflection on whether he was doomed to become an addict like her. I'm focusing too much on the lyrics here but even when I just surrender to the song, I get caught up by the sound of wounded optimism in the middle-eight before the just-about-keeping-it-together defiance of the coda. The instrumentation matches Savage's vocals in emotion and leaves me happily exhausted.

The Internet - Come Over v. Lizzo - Boys A change in mood from above with Syd's voice being the most consistently horizontal of the decade and one that was perfect for the hook on Little Simz's Shotgun. This also means a nicely but straightforwardly relaxed tune, at least until Syd nonchalantly calls "Steve" (Lacey), who obliges with a jolt of fuzzy guitar defibrillation. Boys was my introduction to Lizzo and what an entrance! Yes, it's every party tune you can think of (Baby Got Back, Kiss, Get Ur Freak On particularly) rolled into one hashtaggable hymn to sexual inclusivity but it's got hooks for days, mainly due to Lizzo jumping between different flows and throat-shredding singing, incorporating everything appealing about her.

Christine and the Queens - Doesn't Matter v. Ariana Grande - God Is a Woman If God does exist... God is a woman according to these two. Doesn't Matter doesn't mess with Chris' template but has more spirit than other Queens songs that I've heard. God Is a Woman can be seen as Grande's transition between her previous warbling RnB-flavoured pop and her would-be trap of break up with your girlfriend...the recent switch seems to suit her as I find her singing voice reedy.

Robyn - Ever Again v. Carly Rae Jepsen - Party for One Both singers make accomplished pop but Party for One is the only track in the match-up that's stayed in my memory after hearing both last night and that's surely the purpose of pop.

Out of curiosity, I looked at whose songs have been most successful so far, which appears to be Sweepstakes Ron's with 5 out of 5 nominations still in the game (Rather Be, In Time, Bang Bang Bang, Lies, What's It Gonna Be as ranked by my preference).

Credit to SR, Cupofdreams (4 out of 4: Solitude Is Bliss, Pain, The Dream, Continental Shift) and Moonbeam (3/3: Luz de piedra de la luna, Amanaemonesia, Doesn't Matter)!

The worst performer? That'll be me with 0 out of 5 but moving on, nothing to see here

All my MAA nominations lost in round 1. Guess I oughta stick to singles.

Of course, I had it in mind you'd nommed Flutes, rather than Motion Sickness, even though I could see straight in front of me which Hot Chip was yours! You got robbed for Mountain at My Gates and Don't Swallow the Cap, a rare National track I enjoyed

That or you've found a winning formula this time round. Either way, Rather Be and In Time's inclusions are especially welcome!
