Re: Greatest Punk Bands - RESULTS

As Edre's been busy, he's asked me to present 50-41.

For this ten, there will be a picture of the band, their poll rank, score, number of voters, their AM rank and any fans who placed the band in their top 20 (as everyone submitted at least that number) as usual.

Each entry will also include their recording most favourably reviewed by a specialist punk critic or 'punkest' release (proper English be Damned!) followed by an excerpt of the review.

Anyway, never mind the intro, here's the start of the top 50- HEY! HO! LET'S GO! :music-guitarred:

The Spotify playlist should be up-to-date, even through the earlier-posted links, so I won't try posting it again for now.

I'm taking a break before approaching the final 20 but anyone dare hazard a guess at who will sit at the top of the punk pile? Anyone wish they'd included/excluded a certain band?

Here you go, Mileswide:

I can't blame you for not getting it done, because posting a Spotify playlist on this forum has become extremely convoluted and user-unfriendly.

It wasn't to be for Ramones, bad luck Krurze, but well predicted Frank on calling a victory for The Clash!

I'll round this all up by presenting the decade lists in one go tomorrow but was there any part of the results anyone didn't see coming? Wire appearing at 4 was the main upset for me, we seem to rate them higher as a forum than both critics and the general public, we've clearly got better taste :music-rockon:

Re: Greatest Punk Bands - RESULTS

Post by Live in Phoenix »

Thanks Edre Peraza and mileswide. I tried to guesstimate who the remaining 10 were -- I probably should have been able to guess them all, but in particular I blanked out on Fugazi. Without looking at the numbers, I would have thought that Green Day might end up #1 or #2, just because they've been popular in a way that, say, the Ramones never were.

So when this forum ran the Top Artists poll, I listed the 10 highest acts that haven't been inducted into our forum's Hall of Acclaim. Here are the highest punk acts from this poll that haven't been inducted yet. (I'm planning to run the next Hall of Acclaim after Christmas is over.)

7. Fugazi
9. Dead Kennedys
12. Gang of Four
14. Blink-182
15. The Offspring
17. Minutemen
18. Stiff Little Fingers
19. The Damned
20. Minor Threat
21. Parquet Courts

We're going to look at the top 5s for each era based on the individual decade lists (top 3 for the 21st Century due to so much eclecticism). There was no formula for this, just scoring according to rank, even if that meant scores favouring the longer lists. Single-vote choices were also excluded. Here are the lists:

70s
1. The Clash: 5 votes, 47 points
2. Sex Pistols: 5 votes, 36 points (more #2 places than...)
3. Ramones: 5 votes, 36 points
4. Buzzcocks: 4 votes, 20 points
5. Wire: 4 votes, 17 points

80s
1. Dead Kennedys: 3 votes, 32 points
2. The Clash: 2 votes, 27 votes
3. Black Flag: 3 votes, 26 points
4. Hüsker Dü: 3 votes, 20 points
5. Bad Religion: 2 votes, 15 points

90s
1. Green Day: 4 votes, 45 points
2. The Offspring: 3 votes, 22 points
3. Sublime: 3 votes, 21 points
4. Rancid: 3 votes, 18 points
5. Social Distortion: 2 votes, 16 points

21st Century
1. Green Day: 4 votes, 39 points
2. Sleater-Kinney: 2 votes, 20 points
3. Blink-182: 2 votes, 16 points

There were no spreadsheets for the decade lists as I just used paper for those. I was going to attach the Excel for the main results but my laptop has had other ideas, so I'll revisit that tomorrow!

Interesting. The Offspring and Dead Kennedys should have been in there by now. Not going to lie, I have kinda always been annoyed with the reputation The Offspring has gotten over the years. I feel like ever since Pretty Fly and Original Prankster they kinda dont get treated as seriously as a band but both their old stuff and more recent material is pretty quality in my opinion. Not even just that, The Offspring are one of the most influential independent bands of the 90s (up until after Smash) and have influence so many people

Also I am glad to see some of my favorite 90s punk bands the paved the way for skate punk, and later pop punk, do well (Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Rancid) I was worried because I knew there would be a lot of 70s

Cheers LiP, I wasn't aware of the Hall (I must not have seen that post during the Artists poll), like the sound of it though! Out of the ones yet to be inducted, I imagine Gang of Four and PQ having more clout by dint of having a following on the forum that goes beyond punk fans (I also would've voted for both if I felt more certain that they were punk).

Rob wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2019 8:00 pm I can't blame you for not getting it done, because posting a Spotify playlist on this forum has become extremely convoluted and user-unfriendly.
I was waiting in hope for someone else to think for me, thank you very much Rob for being that person! How did you do it? I tried it by 'quoting' one of your playlists on Biggest Fan, then changing the url to resemble that of my playlist but to no avail...
Alright, here goes.

This is the link address you get when you copy it from Spotify:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6aEXy ... YOyWIZkhpA

This is how it should look:
http://open.spotify.com/user/mileswide/ ... mx1csPGsxj

The changes in a row:
- Remove the 's' in https.
- Remove everything in the url after and including the question mark.
- Between 'open.spotify.com/' there need to be two new elements. First add 'user/'.
- Second add your username. I suspect that you might have gone wrong here when checking the styling of one of my playlist, as you might not have recognized my very old username 'theonering', which shows up nowhere else anymore except in this url.
- Of course, after you have fixed your url you must select it and press the spotifyplaylist button.

Really, that playlist button has become next to useless as it seems to recognize playlists in an outdated way.

By the way, thanks for the presentation and poll, Mileswide and Edre Peraza! I couldn't find time to make my own list, but the roll-out was great and I will certainly listen to the playlist.

I'd done all that, including changing "theonering" to "mileswide" :? Thanks for going through it all though, I take it Henrik knows about this glitch?

Keeping with the playlist, I've replaced the Germs track that was on there as it was coming up corrupted or something like that but it's brought the substituting song to the back. Otherwise, though, the order of 49 to 1 is preserved!

Hopefully the spreadsheet will be found attached now. Even more hopefully it'll be error-free apart from one small mistake I've left in for you to find! (The truth: I'd spotted a miscalculation on the spreadsheet, corrected it while posting it on here but Excel crashed before I had chance to save it, then when I returned to it the next day, I couldn't remember which band the error related to. As I say, though, the presentation did not contain this wrong piece of information)
