Unconscious biases

I came to a realization today that a lot of my favorite bands that aren’t other people’s favorite bands (Tom Waits, Magnetic Fields, The National, etc) have a big thing in common.

They sing in a range I can sing reasonably well.

I sing their songs to myself and the act of doing so makes me more attached to them. Viva la baritone!

Anyone else ever have that kind of epiphany that you have a bias you weren’t aware of?

Though it's not necessarily a common link to every band I enjoy, a strong command of vocal harmonies often means a band will be on my favourites list.

For some reason I never listened to The National even though I'm also viva la baritone. My main bias is a marked preference for female singing over male singing. Thankfully, their newest album featured enough guest female vocalists that it converted me over, and have since been going back through their discography and enjoying it much more.
