Biggest Fan Songs - December 2019
Welcome to the December 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.
There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.
Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.
You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Re: Biggest Fan - December 2019
When The Rolling Stones arrive, The Beatles can’t be too far away… Well, they can as this is their first appearance here. It ranks at AM on #7666 (for those of you keeping score, that’s much lower than yesterday’s Rolling Stones’ song!):
325. The Beatles – I’ve Got a Feeling
Year: 1970
Album: Let It Be
Biggest Fan: Zombeels (#408)

Yes, it borders on the pretentious, but I am glad I discovered this band through him. Seems that The Beatles are a good electric blues band, a bit like The Rolling Stones yesterday. I give this song a 7. Perhaps I'll check out the album as well.
Re: Biggest Fan - December 2019
I'm surprised an obscure band like this even had an album. It's got to be their only one.

Fun fact: today’s artist was in the band from yesterday. Don’t thank me, I like to share such obscure facts. It ranks on AM at #6769:
326. John Lennon – Nobody Told Me
Year: 1984
Album: Milk and Honey

May not go in history as one of his more innovative tunes, but there is energy here and the lyrics are very good.

I'll have to look up if that bug band recorded anything else. It seemed like they were on to something.

The group was also known as the Pelicans as well as the Kidds. Disregard what Discogs says about the single. This is an unissued track recorded in 1955 and first issued on album sometime in the 1980s. The Post single you found is a bootleg that someone made after the album came out. It's not a real release.
Post 2010 is actually a Clifton Chenier single.
I just fixed the release on Discogs. It now shows it an unofficial release.

Whatever it's release date and method, it is still an overlooked track, but undeserved, as this is quite good. Really good use of backing vocals.

I hadn't heard A Sailor's Guide to Earth since 2016, but after hearing this song I immediately went back to it. That is a great album, isn't it? Keep It Between the Lines is also a stand-out track. My favorite moment is when a guitar solo threatens to turn into a glam metal version of Beethoven's Ode to Joy, but quickly turn more mellow, followed by the entrance of some brass. Great stuff.

Re: Biggest Fan - December 2019
Little note about this one. All the versions are called (re)mixes, but not one in particular is stated by Setherex. I added the radio mix to the Spotify list, as that description makes it sound like the most standard version, but I feel the need to say that the Hitman’s Club Mix is far more popular. If Setherex reads this and has a preferred version, plays say so.
329. Ghost Town DJ’s – My Boo
Year: 1996
Released as a single
Biggest Fan: Setherex (#728)

Hmm, maybe that popular Hitman's Club Mix is a little better, but the original fares quite well. For what is essentially a dance track it is surprisingly bare. That turns out to be a double-edged sword: it doesn't feel quite as catchy as it should be, but makes the declarations of love seem acts of real affection.

Only last week we had The Rolling Stones appear and here they are again. Trying to catch up to Prince? In this case I thought the song would be famous enough to get more votes in the poll, but apparently not. It ranks at #2985 on AM:
330. The Rolling Stones – Lady Jane
Year: 1966
Album: Aftermath

Thought I'd voted yesterday, but apparently not:
The Rolling Stones – Lady Jane: 6
This the Stones trying an acoustic folk ballad. Although the sparse arrangements create an atmosphere and Mick Jagger has a surprisingly good voice for this there is something about this song that fails to truly grab me. Maybe at heart it is a bit of a bore, by a band who at that time excelled in being anything but boring.

This makes me think of what the Rolling Stones would have been like hundreds of years ago. (Notice there are 3 women worked into the song.) This is in fact the borrowed tune from Neil Young's "Borrowed Tune," from the Tonight's the Night album.

Far from torture for me. It is a vital, playful, almost funny piece. Belongs to the more unique tracks that have appeared here and certainly in a good way.

6 - I watched it with the music video first and I don't think I can separate them now. They seem very tied together. I quite like it, might be a grower.

Steely Dan – Things I Miss the Most: 5
This has the classic Steely Dan sound: classy, tasteful and also a little dull for my personal taste.
Beth Orton - Best Bit: 8
Love the way she sings. It's very singular and gives the song almost it's own rhythm.

Re: Biggest Fan - December 2019
John Lennon - Nobody Told Me 4 Not as numbingly bland as some of his latter-day output but still nondescript.
The Kidds - Down in Mexico 5 As Rob highlights, nice use of vocals, kind of acting like an instrument, but doesn't grab me otherwise.
Sturgill Simpson - Keep It within the Lines 6 My enjoyment of most genres, particularly country, depends on the singing but Simpson is at least a moving target, careening into Southern soul here and he sounds at home.
Ghost Town DJ's - My Boo 6 Staying on a subjective theme, the RnB songs I like the most tend to be the ones I have memories associated with but haven't heard to the point of exhaustion, rather than any inherent quality. While I can't say either applies here, there's an endearing amateurism to proceedings (albeit one that's inexplicable given Jermaine Dupri's involvement).
The Rolling Stones - Lady Jane 5 Stones do Greensleeves just because they can, Jagger goes full Renaissance Faire-actor and is the weakest element of the song (genuinely not often you can say that about a Stones track). Borrowed Tune improves on this as Young is more emotionally invested but LJ is still amusingly silly...
Four Tet - smile around the face 8...as is this tune but in a more intentional way. Yet another Kieran Hebden track to make me want to dive further into his discography (I really should this time), this lands somewhere between Lemon Jelly's twisted nursery-rhyme electronica and Bonobo's organic chillout. It's also the track I've played most in the last few days, top find!
Steely Dan - Things I Miss the Most 4 This must be a case of having to have lived like Fagen & Becker to truly appreciate the lyrics. The complacency of the music doesn't help.
Beth Orton - Best Bit 7 There's an untutored quality to Orton's vocals, which is neutered by the session musician sound to the first half of the song for me. Thankfully, by the time the violins come in, the production takes it into more airborne territory.
