Mathématiques Modernes - Disco Rough: 6
The title is apt: it indeed seems like someone gave a real disco track a rough production. That does make it stand out a bit.

325. The Beatles – I’ve Got a Feeling That's when I realize that the Beatles have something extra... even on a genre that usually bothers me, they manage to make it something really unique. 8/10
326. John Lennon – Nobody Told Me Average 5/10
326. The Kidds – Down In Mexico As usual 3.5/10
327. Sturgill Simpson – Keep It Between The Lines Ooooooooh, that's great! Musically, it's extraordinary, and vocally superb. J'ai kiffé ma race ! Thanks acroamor. 10/10
328. Ghost Town DJ’s – My Boo It's aged terribly. 4/10
329. The Rolling Stones – Lady Jane Another classic that appears... of course it's good. 7.5/10
330. Four Tet – Smile around the face This little "modified fairground sound" does it all. That's really nice! A beautiful discovery. 8/10
331. Steely Dan – Things I Miss the Most Not bad, but not my thing 5.5/10
332. Beth Orton – Best Bit Tutulututululululuuu and cello! Good song. 7/10
333. Mathématiques Modernes – Disco Rough I love synthpop we don't see enough of them here often enough:-) 9/10
334. U2 – The Refugee how did they get from that to "big stadium band"? It's really good. 7/10

Excellent set of song. Thanks to all of you.

U2 – The Refugee: 7

Though their debut album is a classic, to me U2 started to get interesting on War, when they broke more free from the post-punk that was all around and developed their own style. Sadly, the hardly ever made anything as strong since (I only like Achtung Baby more). The Refugee, although not as strong as classics like Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day, showcases that at this time U2 new how to make topical songs sound immediate and important, while being at the same time earnest and real.

I don't see any rating from you.

The only U2 record I actually like a lot is "I Will Follow." A couple of others are pretty good, like "New Yaer's Day" and "Pride (In The Name of Love)." The other WAR singles were pretty good also. After that I did not like them at all any more.

Another hit for The Heavy if you ask me. Love the Morricone-like vibe of the music and the lyrics fit that style well.

327. The Kidds – Down In Mexico - 6
Just fine.
332. Steely Dan – Things I Miss the Most - 3
Some stuff I liked, some I didn't. Very much not a fan whatever happens to the singer's voice after the 2 minute mark.
333. Beth Orton – Best Bit - 8
A joy to listen to - a good pace and a great voice.
334. Mathématiques Modernes – Disco Rough - 5
335. U2 – The Refugee - 8
Really great. Lots of influences showing up here - the "Her papa go to war..." bit in particular reminds me a lot of My Sharona.
336. The Heavy – Short Change Hero - 10
This song just has so much atmosphere and character. Best enjoyed in a lonely place, like a long drive, to really bring out that wild west feeling. One of my favourites.

I admit that songs like these work in context, but there are Christmas songs that are better. On it's own merits it is pretty, yet dull.

TV on the Radio – Golden Age: 8
A superb blast of rumbling energy. Kind of odd that it didn't get more votes, come to think of it.

I have a hard time enjoying Christmas songs that don't have nostalgia attached, and this one also puts me off with how slow it is. I can acknowledge it's good though, just not for me.

I need to dig deeper into TOTR, the stuff I've heard through the forum has been consistently good.

Zombeels returns, this time not with an actual sixties band as is his wont, but with a fake sixties band.

The Dukes of the Stratosphere – My Love Explodes: 7

The Dukes of the Stratosphere were a side project from the guys of XTC. When it starts it seems like it is going to be a faithful, but dull homage to sixties pop rock, but the more the song progresses, the more it goes off the rails, becoming in the end more of a tribute to near-experimental psychedelia. It also becomes a lot of fun.

I wonder, though, if someone is going to quote the final spoken words as a review here.

Don't think anybody would ever listen to that track and think it's from the 60s.

This one reminds me a lot of the Madchester stuff from the Stone Roses/Happy Mondays that would arrive a few years after this. They obviously draw from similar influences but I wonder how much XTC went on to further influence the genre with this project...
