Next decade poll

Post by Honorio » Sun Dec 01, 2019 11:45 am

This is a thread created to decide the following decade polls. I endorse the comments that appeared on the 1989 Poll:

The complete schedule for the two options would be:
Option A:
- 2020 1970s
- 2021 1960s
- 2022 pre-1960s
- 2023 2010s
Option B:
- 2020 2010s
- 2021 1970s
- 2022 1960s
- 2023 pre-1960s

Or, since the pre-1960s usually have less participation, we can do a pre-1960s poll with a simpler format (one for albums and one for songs without the year-per-month format) the same year of the 1960s poll. But we could decide it later. Now we should vote between 1970s and 2010s for next year.
If the option A wins we could also do a poll next year for the 2010s decade with the simple format (one for albums and one for songs).

Out of curiosity, which decade will be polled next year?
Moonbeam wrote:

I'm not sure yet! Normally, it would be the 1970s, but the 2010s could also be done as the decade will have finished. I know some people have said they want to wait until 2021 to do the 2010s, but the way these polls work, I think enough time would have passed by the time we get to the later years - the 2019 poll would be done in November, 2020, which I feel is enough time to let those releases settle.

Personally, I'd rather do 70's then '60's then pre-'60's and wait until 2023 to do 2010s but I realize I'm more patient in my old age than many here. Doing the 2010's in 2020 would put us in line to do the same decade again 4 years later.

Just a notion I wanted to throw in the ring to see if anyone else agrees.

Thanks!

Either 70s or 2010s would be wonderful for me. I’m not sure if I feel the need to rediscover the 2010s considering that I’ve already been doing that for two months prepping for EOD.
Listyguy wrote:

I do think jumping into the 10's immediately would be redundant, because we're certainly going to have EOY and EOD polls in the coming months.
Rob wrote:

For selfish reasons I wanted to do 2010's now. For me, after the eighties, I have gone full circle with these polls. Did one for each decade, except the 2010's. I always listen to a lot from the poll's decade, but am not going to do that once again now I have all of them. The 2010's would be a good cap. That's just me though.
mileswide wrote:

As long as we're doing an EOD for 2010s, I'm easy with 70s or 10s next, I prefer both decades to the 80s. I do, however, think precedence should be given to the opinion of more longstanding members who have already been through the decade cycle.
Live in Phoenix wrote:

My "con" argument against the '10s being cycled next is that we will have just done a substantial '10s poll (and would we cycle back normally to the '10s again in 2023 -- or much later?). My "pro" argument is that if a bunch of '10s polls would risk being a retread, another '70s poll could certainly be called a retread; plus someone like me has not done a deep dive into the '10s, which our year-long poll would help remedy.

If we kept with the normal cycle, the '10s would come up in 2023, which doesn't seem like a long time to wait, so I'm leaning toward waiting until then.
Brad wrote:
Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:10 pm
Maybe the answer then is to utilize the "end of decade" poll for the 2010's to satisfy those looking to summarize their favorites from the recent past, then continue to treat the year-by-year decade polls in the same order we have always done, with the 2010's coming up in 2023 (it may seem like a long way away, but trust me it's not!).

I guess I'm just furthering my own case here, but is it really necessary to break stride with how we've proceeded over the last 12+ years? No matter how many times we go over each decade (I've been through two 70's polls already), I find there's ALWAYS more to explore from our past, if you're willing to open up a bit.
Listyguy wrote:

I strongly agree with this point. There's a lot of great music to be found in the lower ranks of the AM lists that I certainly haven't heard yet, and having a focus of a given year or decade really makes it easier to focus on that. And I didn't even mention unranked stuff...

I looked through the Old Forum a while back, and for the 2000s they did a poll for 2000s albums and songs after the decade ended, and waited until the cycle of albums came back to the 2000s a year later for the cycle of decade polls. I feel like we should do the same thing here. Plus, it'd be interesting to get a perspective on what albums from the decade we loved now, and how tastes changed by the time 2023 rolled around. I don't think we should wait until 2021 to release the first 2010s poll (I wouldn't be too happy about that personally). Let's do the 70s once the 80s poll ends, as expected.

I'm being persuaded that it is wise to hold back on the 2010s until 2023, I feel that my 2010s lists will be rather preliminary at the end of this year, but maybe a breathing space will provide a better perspective than launching straight into year polls. Anyway, I do love the music of the 1970s.

00's or the freakin' 70's. A hard choice. If we do the 00's we get the opportunity to become frontrunners on the web! Also remember that for every good song of the 00's there are 5-10 from the 70's. It will be almost SHOCKING diving right into the year 1970 now in january. Jobim, Rodriguez, Velvets!

As to the "What next?" debate:
I vote we let EOD take care of the 2010s for now and do the 2010s year by year in 2023.

I personally would like to do the 2000s next for year by year since I started to get "out of touch" musically around then and it would force me to do some deep diving into the decade's tunes.

But I am sure I would still make some new discoveries from the 70s if we did them next.

Another option would be to do a pre-1950 poll...but I am guessing there is less interest from most of the forum in those years.
Brad wrote:

There's actually quite a bit of interest in the pre-50's era. However, we traditionally do the decades in reverse order, so 70's would be next, followed by '60's in 2021, then 1900-1959 in 2022.

That's the other way round for me, the 70s is by far the decade I like the least (if we start with the 60s to the 2010s). There are obviously a couple exceptions a year, but the 71 to 76 stretch is the crossing of the desert for me.
The 00s though ? Bet there are a few years I can come up with a top 30 albums without going below 4 stars.

Yeah, maybe we should do 2010s first. Dig up every future classic possible. Then let it rest a few years and then re-do it. The 1970s don't go anywhere.

For fun or reflection perhaps, the number of songs from each 70s and 10s year on my ever evolving top thousand list:

1970: 49 songs
1971: 30
1972: 29
1973: 38
1974: 32
1975: 44
1976: 26
1977: 35
1978: 31
1979: 24

2010: 8
2011: 3
2012: 7
2013: 5
2014: 2 [The 'Interstellar' (indian) drone chase song ("Cornfield Chase" by Hans Zimmer) and "Ben's My Friend" by Sun Kil Moon]
2015: 5
2016: 4
2017: 5
2018: 1 (sorry, Frank, MGMT and Beach House, even Julia Holter is not very interresting anymore...)
2019: 1 (a jazz tune so it doesn't really count...)

I don't know who's decision this is ultimately, but here's how the schedule would lay out if we continued doing this the same way we have since the inception of the yearly decade polls:

2020 - 1970s
2021 - 1960s
2022 - 1900-1959
2023 - 2010s
2024 - 2000s
2025 - 1990s
2026 - 1980s
2027 - 1970s
2028 - 1960s
2029 - 1900-1959
2030 - 2020s

Then global destruction.

My option would also be the 2010s first. In fact I half assumed that it was going to be like that and I thought it was my opportunity to have a much delayed catch-up with the decade. But I could perfectly wait until 2023 for that. Anyway I'm not going to participate on the 1970s, 1960s and 1950s poll if this is the final decision, I'm not participating on the 1990s and 1980s. I'm an old member of the forum and I already participated twice. I enjoyed it a lot the first time and even the second but I prefer to dedicate my spare listening time to other things/games.
Since the opinions on this thread are quite divided (the first ones were mostly keen to the 1970s but lately some people chose the 2010s) maybe the best way to decide is to make a poll on the subject. Moreover this thread is for 1989, maybe it's better to continue with the comments on an specific thread.

Please feel free to add new comments on this thread

I stand by my earlier comments and abstain- the opinion of longer-serving members carries more weight than mine on this subject. Besides, the 70s and 10s are more or less equally great decades (I sound like a real fencesitter, don't I?)

Even if I said the 70s is the worst decade of music for me, I still think we should continue with our usual cycle and tackle it next year. There is already going to be most likely an end of decade poll, so going with 2010s for the yearly poll would be overkill. That can wait 2023 for sure.

I would prefer the 2010s. The seventies aren't very exciting to poll, because it would roughly be the same result as last time. For the 2010s there would be more chance for surprises and new discoveries. The first year of a new decade would be perfect to look back on the decade that's just finished. I would also be disappointed if the period before 1960 doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I have a preference for the 2010s. Part of it is for selfish reasons, as parenthood meant that I missed out on a lot and I'd like to discover stuff sooner than 2023. I suppose if we are going to do a 2010s poll, it might be a bit superfluous, but my vote is still for the 2010s.

The only scenario where I'd even possibly want the '10s fast-tracked is if there isn't a large End of Decade poll at the same exact time.

Sorry, just saw the actual polling buttons. My vote has been cast.

My argument for staying the course is three-fold:

1) Waiting for 2010s allows for further discovery BEFORE casting votes.
2) Avoids the "double dipping" effect of a 2010s EOD poll followed by individual years poll. (I am making the assumption this would occur whether option A or B is enacted.)
3) An easy way for those who think "The 1970s will be the same as last time" to avoid that is to choose to focus on sampling music from genres they have minimal knowledge of but don't actively loathe.

The 70s had punk, disco, prog rock, heavy metal, reggae, fusion jazz, new wave late in the decade and the singer-songwriter movement. Chances are EVERY person here is at least somewhat ignorant of one of these. You could also try one of the "big" genres you have gaps in: folk, jazz, country and blues.

Another avenue for discovery is the Uber indie world of private press records (many of these can be heard on YouTube (and Spotify surprisingly):
https://rateyourmusic.com/list/captains ... hern-rock/

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/yerblues ... ss-albums/

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/bibopar/ ... nds-1970s/

If none of these work, try using the RYM "charts" feature to find stuff from the year that is highly ranked you haven't heard or do a search in the "Lists" category using words like "obscure", "unknown", "underrated" or "less than" (usually turns up albums with a very low amount of total rankings).

There's an albums EOD poll which has been open for months here, and I believe the results are supposed to be posted in Spring 2020 (i may be wrong) -

To me the question is not "which is next," but "when will we do the 2010s?" And my answer is 2021 at the very latest.

To make my point better, we can consider that the 2010s will leave us, and the 2020s will be born. Celebrating the 2010s 3-4 years later is akin to holding a funeral 3-4 months after a loved one has passed away. Certainly preparations must be done, the grieving process needs time to complete, papers need to be filed, and you need time to write your eulogy. But usually the funeral is (at maximum) one month after death, not 3-4 months. (I know there are issues with preserving a body, but I think my metaphor still holds up)

So certainly, I side with a 2010s retrospective occurring sooner rather than later.

If we're talking the longer form ideas, I'd like to see 1970s next and then do 2010s the year after, or at least do 1960s after and then do 2010s after that.

A major part of this conversation would have to be where the 2010s would even go next time. Does it additionally show up as usual in 2023 (3 major polls for it in a handful of years)? Or does it skip that appearance and not show up again until like 2030 or '31, which seems like a long time? Or as Honorio mentioned, do the 2010s not happen immediately but the '60s and pre-'60s get represented in one year, to make the '10s poll happen earlier?

I've now heard numerous decades talked about as favorites or un-favorites. I feel like this has inadvertently made a case for plodding along as usual (i.e., the 2010s get an EOD poll, and a 2023 appearance in the rotation), because it seems like the rotation's predictability was never designed to make everyone entirely happy, since that's not really possible.

At some point we may want to consider combining decades after the 1960. In such a scenario we could cover 2 or more years each month.

I salute your inventiveness and I personally would be able to accommodate 2 years a month but I can't see it helping participation, which I know has been a concern for some years of the 80s poll. Just my two pennies though, I'm sure others will have their own!

One other option. For the yearly decade polls keep the current cycle, but have another single ballot 10s polls in 2020.

Have the single ballot poll in 2020 alongside the 79s poll then have the year by year poll in 2023 when we’ve all fully digested the 10s.

Have the single ballot poll in 2020 alongside the 79s poll then have the year by year poll in 2023 when we’ve all fully digested the 10s.
This is what I suggested in the 1989 thread, and I completely agree that this is what we should do.

Will we do a poll where everyone posts a list from the 10s? If so, I would like to do 70s decade poll first.
I feel like that

More of an inofficial way… 70's we do first but until new years eve we nominate 20 songs each from the 10's that we dig the most and quickly become first on the web (?) with a twenty hundred and 10's song list. 20, 19, 18 points and so on. And of course we could calculate some cult songs among these… Could work as a nomination phase until later when we do both albums and songs from the 2010's properly.

Strength with AM in my view is we consider "great" and "cult" songs alike and there is a way for songs to "advance" in people's minds.

Voted for option B, but reading the arguments for A, especially the fact that a big decade poll is coming along soon, makes me fine for both options.

Well, three weeks have passed and the Option 1 has a solid lead so finally it seems that next year we will make the 1970s Poll. So let me try to establish a kind of schedule for 2020. First of all let me list the polls planned for 2020:
- Best Albums and Songs of the 1970s (on a year-per-month basis from February to November, with final voting on December and January), hosted by Listyguy.
- Best Albums and Songs of the 2010s (simple format, from March to June maybe?), hosted by Honorio (albums) and Schüttelbirne (songs).
- Best Albums and Songs of 2019 (from January to March), hosted by Holden (albums) and acroamor (songs).
- Moderately Acclaimed Albums of 2019 (from December to January), hosted by jirin.
- Unacclaimed VI (from January to May), hosted by Bang Jan.
- Best Albums of All Time Seventh Edition (from June to November maybe?). We need a volunteer to host this.
- Moderately Acclaimed 11 (from March until November), hosted by Brad.
- Artist of the Month (on an artist-per-month basis throughout the whole year), hosted by Holden.
- AMF Weekly Chart (ongoing poll on a weekly basis), hosted by TheLastEnemy.
- AMFWC Classics (ongoing poll on a weekly basis), hosted by spiritualized.
- Biggest Fan (ongoing poll on a daily basis), hosted by Rob.

Moreover we can expect some additional/unplanned polls, probably another artist poll hosted by Hymie and games like Overlooked hosted by BleuPanda or Tournament 1 hosted by Holden. If I remember well, last year we had some of these "unplanned" polls like theOverlooked 3 2010s edition (hosted by Bleupanda and still running), instrumental songs (hosted by panam), the choruses poll (hosted by mileswide), the forgotten hits poll (hosted by Wisnu Tirta Aji), the punk bands poll (hosted by Edre Peraza and mileswide) and the artists/label polls hosted by Hymie (last year we had Ray Charles, Rolling Stones, James Brown, Elvis Presley and Motown). And we also had the planned Top Artists of All Time poll. . Please let me know if I missed some other game.

So, apart of the four ongoing polls that (possibly) will last for the whole year(artsist of the month, biggest fan, AMF weekly chart and AMF WC classics) we can divide the activity by trimesters:
- First trimester (January-March): Unacclaimed VI, BMAA of 2019, Albums and Songs of 2019 and the first steps of the 1970s Decade Poll (1970-1971) and Moderately Acclaimed 11 (nominations). Exhausting but possible...
- Second trimester (April-June): Unacclaimed VI (final rounds), Albums and Songs of the 2010s (nominations), 1970s Decade Poll (1972-1974) and Moderately Acclaimed 11 (round 1).
- Third trimester (July-September): Albums and Songs of the 2010s (results), Best Albums of All Time Seventh Edition (nominations), 1970s Decade Poll (1975-1977) and Moderately Acclaimed 11 (round 2).
- Fourth trimester (October-December): Best Albums of All Time (final nominations and results), 1970s Decade Polls (1978-1979 and final votes) and Moderately Acclaimed 11 (final rounds).

To cut a long story short, if we use the first half of 2020 for the 2010s and 2019 poll and the second half for the all time songs poll we can have an acceptable participation despite the maelstrom of polls.

Of course please feel free to explain your opinion here…

Edit: added two hosts (Schüttelbirne for 2010s songs and Listyguy for 1970s)

That's pretty comprehensive but isn't it AT albums, rather than songs, as it'll be 3 years from 2017? ;)

I'd volunteer to host the songs poll; that is, if nobody else wants to do it.

Yes, I believe it's albums this year (not songs).

Also, I can handle the 70s poll if nobody else claims it.

You’re right, mileswide. I went to the history of forum polls and the 2018 songs poll was not added (I just added myself).

Now we only need a host for the all-time albums poll

This looks great Honorio, thanks so much for people giving me a chance to host one of the more important polls, despite being newer to the site!

There is also the final 1980s poll running through to 10/2/2020 hosted by Moonbeam. So the first quarter is certainly busy on the polls front - especially with the big polls coming thereafter.

So that would move the whole decade poll to April? Although that feels counter-intuitive on first glance I really like this as it gives some breathing space to the 2019 poll and Moonbeam's 80's poll, to say nothing on the Moderately Acclaimed 2019 one. There are a lot, aren't there?

If the option A wins we could also do a poll next year for the 2010s decade with the simple format (one for albums and one for songs).
This would be the preferred option for me. If I recall correctly, we did something like this in 2010 when the 2000's decade was over. I wouldn't mind having it like this.

I would be like to put on the Best Albums of All-Time Poll.
