beefsupreme - I have "Debris Slide" as 1991 off Perfect Sound Forever. Was it truly released in 1990?

Yes, Brad, according to RYM and Wikipedia «Debris Slide» is from 1991 so Beefsupreme I won't count it
Of course you can nominate another song as your #15

With the steeper point scale and 15 songs/albums making it to the second round, it is likely, especially in the songs lists, that works with only one vote go to the 2nd round.
While I like the steeper scale, I don't think that would be a good thing, so I think I'm gonna add a new rule.

Every album/songs needs a minimum of 2 votes to go to the 2nd round

When I look at the Excel sheet as it is today, it seems an obvious thing to do.
Any objection gentlemen ?

There's no great love for the Black Crowes. Well, it's not a surprise, I don't remember that southern rock is a favorite genre here, but this album is perfectly written, recorded and performed IMO. An album I had forgotten and a very pleasant surprise to rerdiscover it.

It's not a bad album by any means. Without any memory of the production values, it would be kind of shocking that an album produced in 1990 was perfect with the advent of CDs, loudness wars and brickwalling. Maybe it's an exception though. It's tough to believe that because Drakoulias was mentored by Rick Rubin, the king of the compression and brickwalling.

well, it sounds fresh, and it's recorded like a Rolling Stones album from the seventies. But i'm a fan of Drakoulias/Rubin so... but I know what you mean about the 90s production

I think Rick Rubin gets a lot of credit based a couple of things: First, he was one of the first super producers for hip-hop especially hip-hop and rock. Second, for finding cover songs for Johnny Cash to sing. Neither of those required genius production, just somebody to lay the songs on tape. I will definitely give him credit for helping bring hip-hop to the mainstream and bringing Johnny Cash to a new generation. He definitely deserves all the praise given for those things. But, he's not a good producer and embodies all of the terrible aspects of modern production.

I actually had Shake Your Moneymaker back in 1990, but very very quickly tired of it, especially after the heavy stateside overplay of their rather tepid version of "Hard to Handle".

"Jealous Again" is pretty good I suppose, but I sold the album back for beer money back in the day when you could actually make a little cash on used CDs.

I love "Hard To Handle", except is as my #1 song
Probably because I Heard it before the Otis version. So to me the Otis song is the cover  (or has nothing to do with the BC rendition in my opinion)

At the moment, that Black Crowes album is my number 2, behind Depeche Mode, though I've only managed to hear 6 or so albums at the moment, so that's not that impressive a feat!! That said, it is simply the Rolling Stones pushed back 20 years or so. I mean, I really do think it's impossible to like Tumbling Dice and not like Seeing Things. The two songs are so similar. My list so far looks a little like this:

1. Depeche Mode - violator
2. The Black Crowes - shake your money maker
3. Fugazi - Repeater
4. Pixies - Bossanova
5. Deee-Lite - World Clique

Oh definitely not - I hope to get at least a top 15 going. I'm listening to that Madredeus album that Miguel posted before and on first listen it sounds magnificent.

From my initial listening I'm finding 1990 to be much more of a songs year than an albums year. My favorite release is an EP (MBV's Glider), and no albums are in my top 100, but there are some great singles. This year is definitely the calm before the storm hit in 1991.

Wow... a lot of rock / noise rock / hard rock / metal in these lists (and in the 90s recommendations thread). I usually like a bit of rock myself, but 1990 is such a wonderfully varied year in music. There's no reason why rock should overwhelm everything else. So here's a reminder to everyone that this forum isn't all about rock music.

I'm surprised by the lack of (serious) love for Cocteau Twins. I've given Heaven or Las Vegas a couple of listens now, and I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Edit: And Codeine! Frigid Stars really does sound a lot like it's 1990's Spiderland. More sad perhaps, less enthralling, but still it has a great sound.

Heaven Or Las Vegas has always been my #1 of 90. Nevertheless when I listened to my old favorites of 90 again this month I must say Violator sounded even better (it had been some time since I listened to those previous time before). Anyway Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins and Ride are going to be my top 3 if I don't find anything that really blows my mind.
Thanks for recommending Codeine. Haven't heard it before. Sounds interesting.

It's true. In fact I perfer Vegas to Loveless. I always felt MBV stole a lot of credit that should belong to the Cocteau Twins when it comes to influence. In just about every female (and in many cases male) fronted dreampop and shoegaze, C86 and twee band you can clearly hear the influence of the the Twins ESPECIALLY MBV. With all this talk about Whitney being an influencial vocalist, she doesn't hold a candle to the vocal stylings of Liz Frasier. Even men try to sound like her (Sigur Ros, the Delays) thats how much of an impact that just her voice alone has created. She easily has one of the most distinctive and beautiful voices from her generation all the way til today.

Here is my albums list, I'm not sure any of them need my vote to make it to next round but those are the 5 albums of this year I enjoy :

1) Fugazi - Repeater
2) Ride - Nowhere
3) A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
4) Happy Mondays - Pills Thrills 'n' Bellyache
5) Sonic Youth - Goo

My songs list will arrive later, but it really looks like the Pitchfork 500 selection for the moment...
By the way, Jesus Lizard's "Mouth Breather" has been released in 1990 as a single... so don't forget it !

9. Phil Collins - Do You Remember?

This song was first issued on But Seriously, a 1989 album, so it's not eligible

I'll take your #16 as #15 and move everything up above

Ok, I've listened to 1990s music almost non stop this last month, that I've been pining for the Black Keys and Curtis Mayfield, so for my own sanity, I'm going to stop now. I updated my list on last.fm's journal thing, so that I could put small explanations, so I may as well post them here.

1) Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
The sheer power of this album stems from its complicated arrangements, its fuzzy sound, and the magnificently doozy sound of Elizabeth Fraser's voice. In almost every dream pop/shoegaze band, especially My Bloody Valentine, the influence of the Twins can be heard. Even male artists try to sound like Liz Fraser (think Sigur Ros). And alongside the influence is great songs - from the opener "Cherry-Coloured Funk" all the way to the glorious "Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires", the Twins captivate you, and it's difficult to peel away. 4/5

2) Depeche Mode - Violator
Synths are probably an acquired taste - there are few synth albums(excepting Kraftwerk) which I find easy to listen to. Conventional wisdom says that synths are cold, inhuman - but Violator smashes that idea up and leaves it in the corner. From the very first song to the last, the album demands your attention and you can't help but give it. Goodies are abound - from Sweetest Perfection which hauntingly tells the tale of a drug addiction, to Enjoy The Silence to the most well known "Personal Jesus", which is as perfect as perfect gets. 4/5

3) Codeine - Frigid Stars
A pioneering album in the sadcore genre, it sounds like 1990's version of Slint's masterpiece Spiderland. Perhaps more sad, less enthralling, but it still has a great sound. Take for example "Cigarette Machine" - the crunch of the guitars clash duel beautifully with the heavy drums, with the cold vocals of Stephen Immerwahr providing a chilling, haunting layer on top. "Not even star-crossed, just unlucky". 4/5

4) The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
With touches of Led Zeppelin and most of all Exile-era Stones, this is an album of pure American rock 'n' roll. With muscular guitars propped up by smart songwriting and hooky choruses, it's difficult to not find the songs catchy. It goes further though, and it really rewards repeated listening. 4/5

5)Ride - Nowhere
3/5

6) Sonic Youth - Goo
The album doesn't quite keep up with its cover art, but that's pretty difficult. It's odd to think that this spawned SY's biggest hit with "Kool Thing", with Kim Gordon's hardly radio friendly vocals - "I mean, are you gonna liberate us girls from male white corporate oppression?", she says, while Chuck D of Public Enemy fame provides some awesome backup. It's the longer songs that contain the SY magic though, especially Tunic (Song For Karen) - a song written in response to the death of Karen Carpenter. 3/5

7) Madredeus - Existir
It provided a revelatory first listen, with Teresa Salgueiro's vocals being utterly enchanting, taking you into another world that every other album in this list simply can't. It's the simplicity of the music that makes it beautiful - often it's just an accordion and her voice. I have no idea what she says but man, it makes me feel like few others.

8) Fugazi - Repeater

9) Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour
3/5

10) Pixies - Bossanova
An average Pixies album, but a good album nonetheless. From the intro of the first two songs to the delightful love song of Velouria all the way to the peak of the album with The Happening, Pixies stick with tradition and take you on a careering journey. Again the understated part of the Pixies are their lyrics - take The Happening for example. That said, for me it's just too Frank Blacky, and it doesn't seem like a Pixies album to me. What I loved about Doolittle is the input of Santiago, Lovering and Deal - with Bossanova, it's just too Black-centric, and it suffers. It's less fun, less powerful and less emotive. 3/5

11) Deee-Lite - World Clique
Off the power of Groove is in the Heart, the album would be considered amazing. As a single, it's a revelatory listen, providing so many funk/house/modern dance chippets that groove really does enter your heart. It's difficult for the rest of the album to keep up with such a high, and it suffers as a result. It's simply not compelling enough, despite Lady Miss Kier's brilliant vocals. 3/5

For Nicolas' sake, if it makes it easier -

1. Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
2. Depeche Mode - Violator
3. Codeine - Frigid Stars
4. The Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
5. Ride - Nowhere
6. Sonic Youth - Goo
7. Madredeus - Existir
8. Fugazi - Repeater
9. Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour
10. Pixies - Bossanova
11. Deee-Lite - World Clique

It's nice to see fellow support for Trashcan Sinatras. Such an underrated brilliant album. 1990 was the last year I purchased cassettes, in fact "Some Friendly" by The Charlatans was the 1st CD I ever bought, but I had a box with about 300+ cassettes I had from back in High School. I wish I still had that box, and tape player to see what other hidden gems besides this one I had that I have long forgotten about. Since this is out of print, you cannot find it on spotify and I only have "Only Tongue Can Tell" and "Obscurity Knocks" digitally. I really have to find a copy of this for myself.... Thanks for inspiring me!!!

No problem. What saves me some time is lists starting with the #1 and artist-album (and not the other way around)

From next month on ranking yr list from 1 to 15 and using a Artist - Title presentation will be compulsory I'm wasting too much time editing those lists.
