Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 (2020) - Starts Next Week!

Posted: Thu Jan 09, 2020 6:51 pm
by Brad
I realize there's a lot going on here lately (too much?), but I just gotta squeeze this in here if we want to stay on schedule...

Let's gear up for Moderately Acclaimed Albums - 2020 style!
This will be year 11 and still going strong, with record attendance last year!

Here's the deal:

Best Moderately Acclaimed Albums is a voting game where only albums and EPs not ranked in the top 500 are eligible. This includes all "bubblers" and completely unacclaimed albums and EPs.

There will be a single elimination draw with 128 albums, and now it's time to pick them.

Send me an ordered list of ten nominations via pm. Please include the artist name and album name as they appear on AM, as well as the AM rank (AM rank is important! Please don't make me track all these down!).

You have until Sunday, February 16th to make nominations.

Same drill as in the past -
I will select nominations as follows:
First I will go through and pick all the first place albums
Then, I will go through and pick all the second place albums
Then, the third place albums, etc, until the draw fills up.

No more than 25 will be picked ranked 1000 or higher, no more than 50 ranked 1500 or higher, no more than 75 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 100 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list.

I will then sort the selections into quadrants based on their rankings, and then create a bracket by randomly sorting each quadrant.

During the competition period (which will begin in early March), we will choose one match-up from each quadrant (starting at the top of each quadrant) in the field and square them off against each other in a week-long voting period. (For clarification, week 1 of the competition will include the top match-up from each quadrant; week 2 will include the second match-up from each quadrant, etc.).

Additional rules:
- No one person can nominate more than one album by the same artist.
- Albums that have previously won the tournament are not eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the 2019 Moderate game are eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the 2018 Moderate game are eligible, except those that were eliminated in Round 1.
- No albums that qualified for the 2017 Moderate game are eligible, except those that were eliminated in Round 1 or Round 2.
- From the 2016 Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-3 are eligible.
- From the 2015 Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-4 are eligible.
- From the 2014 Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-5 are eligible.
- From the 2013 Moderate game, only those albums that were eliminated in Rounds 1-6 are eligible.
- No albums from 2019 are eligible (the eventual winner of the Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2019 will automatically be entered).

Don't get caught up in all these parameters - I've made it easy for you by including the list of non-eligible albums below!

The actual voting won't start until early March (a couple weeks after the bracket is published - exact date tbd).

Here's a list of the albums that are ineligible per the above stated restrictions (please check your picks!):

Woohoo! If anyone wants to nominate some good 60’s/70’s recommendations ahead of our next decade polls...

Hi Brad, how will 2018 albums be considered for this? They don't have AM rankings yet, but are there ranges associated with them that we can reference?

Well, if we go be Harold's predictions (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7490) then only 3 albums from 2018 would be excluded. But Brad should definitely establish an official rule.

Sounds good... the following three albums from 2018 are ineligible:
Janelle Monae / Dirty Computer
Low / Double Negative
IDLES / Joy as an Act of Resistance

All other albums from 2018 should be placed at a level according to Harold's predictions; otherwise considered "Unranked".

Thanks guys!

You have just cursed it. I wasn't planning on nominating any Tom Waits album, but now I am forced to put Orphans at #1.

Has a Waits album actually come into this every year? Is this fact checked?

No, not every year as far as I can tell, but by my reckoning he is the most consistently nominated artist in this game.

Plenty of time left to submit lists (about a month - 2/16 is the deadline)!

Just note that it's a 2018 album and I'll estimate ranking based on the "Harold Prediction" link you posted. Already several nominators have put in 2018 albums.

ArcadeFire entered a list as well, making it 31 nominations!

I have the draw ready to roll... I won't be able to get it all into BracketMaker until at least tomorrow, but want to provide a little taste here...

First off, NO Tom Waits this year!

Here are the first match-ups (top match-up in each quadrant). This will pretty much constitute Week One of the competition (so go get a head start!):
1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd) vs. Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
2. Suede - Coming Up vs. Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
3. Fennesz - Black Sea vs. Edan - Beauty And The Beat
4. Noir Désir - 666,667 Club vs. Lucy Dacus - Historian

Much more to come!
