80s poll predictions and speculation

Post by andyd1010 »

I think one of the three songs in the top 50 that didn't make it last time is Under Pressure. I built the 300-song playlist starting with the top 120 from the previous poll and was shocked when that one wasn't on it.

Certainly “Under Pressure” is in there. Pretty sure ”About A Girl” (Nirvana) is one of them. And, this might be me being hopeful but perhaps “Marlene on the Wall” (Suzanne Vega) is the other.

Prediction for songs that will not make it in this year's poll:

Violent Femmes - Add It Up
Wipers - Youth of America
Prefab Sprout - Goodbye Lucille #1

Please don't let Billie Jean be number one

phil is correct in that "About a Girl" was one of the three, placing at #36! Two are yet to come, so keep guessing!

Well, you were right about About a Girl, here's hoping your premonition skills are just as strong for Marlene!

I had another look at the last poll. Falling (Julee Cruise) wasn't in there! Surely that must be the other (not Marlene on the Wall).

Edit: Obviously didn’t have a good enough look at this years results. Falling has already come in at #69.

andyd1010 and phil nailed it with "Under Pressure", which came in at #29. The other song was not guessed, "Here Comes the Rain Again" at #27!

Would you be interested in doing a similar guessing game for the top 10? I was planning on revealing #20-11 later today, and then I can leave this for everyone to speculate on the order of the top 10.

I misread this earlier tonight as a prediction for the top 20. I did just now put a top 20 prediction together so I'll post #11-20 here now. No doubt I'll need to change #1-10 once the next 10 are revealed!

11 | U2 | Sunday Bloody Sunday
12 | David Bowie | Ashes to Ashes
13 | Prince and the Revolution | Purple Rain
14 | Bob Marley and the Wailers | Redemption Song
15 | Guns N' Roses | Sweet Child O' Mine
16 | Madonna | Like a Prayer
17 | The Cure | A Forest
18 | Pixies | Where Is My Mind?
19 | Echo and the Bunnymen | The Killing Moon
20 | The La's | There She Goes

Great guess, phil! 9 of your 10 finished in the 11-20 slots, with 2 in the correct positions!

Just was about to post my top 10 prediction and saw the next few are already up. I'll post anyway...

1 | Prince and the Revolution | When Doves Cry
2 | The Smiths | There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
3 | Kate Bush | Running Up That Hill
4 | Joy Division | Love Will Tear Us Apart
5 | Michael Jackson | Billie Jean
6 | The Cure | Just Like Heaven
7 | Talking Heads | Once in a Lifetime
8 | The Smiths | How Soon Is Now?
9 | New Order | Blue Monday
10 | Prince and the Revolution | Purple Rain

Looks like I've already underestimated How Soon Is Now
