Unacclaimed VI: Heats, Week 4

Post by Bang Jan »

The way this game works is that you will be given two sets of four songs, your job is to rank each of the sets from best to worst. First place gets 4 points, second gets 3 etc.

The song with the most points in each set will advance to the semi-finals. If there is a tie for points, then the song with more first place votes will advance. If they are tied on first place votes as well, there will be a sudden death tiebreak. Also the six highest scoring non-winners in the heat stage (based off point per voter and then percentage of first place votes) will also advance to the semi-finals.

Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 15:00 UTC.

If I remember the rules of the game correctly we need to rank the four songs... hoping there's not too much of cries and whispers, I'm having a little bit of an earache right now.. (I stole your idear Honorio  )

JEAN RENOIR GROUP
Erasure | Oh L'Amour
The John Renbourn Group | The Plains of Waterloo
The Free Design | My Brother Woody
Jedi Mind Tricks feat. R.A. the Rugged Man | Uncommon Valor

INGMAR BERGMAN GROUP
MGMT | I Love You Too, Death
Westwood/Cash | Psycho for Your Love
Dispatch | The General
Carl Perkins | All Mama's Children

How it's possible to a "classic" like Oh l'Amour not to be in this website?

Been on a huge Erasure kick lately so that was an easy top choice. Hip hop is very hit or miss for me so I was pleasantly surprised by JMT. Last two are both alright.

Carl Perkins | All Mama's Children

General stood out the most here, very charming. I also liked the second Carl Perkins song I now know, but the other two weren't really my taste.

(Never would have guessed I would have a hip hop track beating Erasure - I love Erasure, but there are a huge amount their tracks better than Oh L'amour IMO, though I still like it. I dislike the majority of hip hop I hear, but some really connects with me, and this Jedi Mind Tricks track really does - I have to listen to more of them.
This group is fabulously eclectic! I like the other two too)

I've missed the past couple of weeks because of the 80s songs poll - I'll get caught up with Weeks 2 and 3 later, even if my ballots won't count!

JEAN RENOIR GROUP
Erasure | Oh L'Amour: 10
The Free Design | My Brother Woody: 8
Jedi Mind Tricks feat. R.A. the Rugged Man | Uncommon Valor: 7
The John Renbourn Group | The Plains of Waterloo: 5

I'm shocked "Oh L'Amour" is even eligible for this game - it's classic, CLASSIC heartbreak-on-the-dancefloor material, maybe the most pertinent example of a mini-genre I love so much. Props to whoever nominated it! I really liked the prettiness of "My Brother Woody" and the harrowing grittiness of "Uncommon Valor", too.

INGMAR BERGMAN GROUP
Westwood/Cash | Psycho for Your Love: 10
MGMT | I Love You Too, Death: 7
Carl Perkins | All Mama's Children: 6
Dispatch | The General: 4

I discovered "Psycho for Your Love" from the 2013 80s poll, and it has become an enduring favorite ever since - the brilliance of the vibrant synths set to a delicious funk rhythm makes me excited every time I hear it. I quite liked the amorphous mess that is "I Love You Too, Death", as well!

100% agree. It's the first time in this game I found a song in english that I find it insane that it's not in AM. Since I saw it here a few days ago, I've been humming it over and over.

Oh L'Amour also very lucky to get through considering it seemed to be extremely polarising amongst the group - lots of #1 and #4.

"Psycho for Your Love" was even more polarizing - 15 of the 21 votes had it either in first or last place!
