Biggest Fan Songs - March 2020

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the March 2020 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Good song, nice melody with great vocals. If it didn't repeat it's lyrics so much it might have been truly great.

It's not the most helpful way for me, but I've added them. But that's quite a lowering of your original vote for Shark Smile!

Kylie Minogue - Secret (Take You Home): 3
I wasn't a fan of the last Minogue song that appeared here, but even with that in mind this is really poor. It was probably album filler (it wasn't a single) and feels like it. What's most painful is that Minogue possesses a powerful voice, but so many times she decided not to use it and here she brings it back to it's low point, an annoying version of a third-rate teenage Britanny Spears wannabe (as done by a woman of 35, which Minogue was at the time). Is this a way of slumming for talented singers?

Some confusion about the version today. Like a lot of house tracks there are a lot of mixes and as a non-expert I have some trouble locating the original. I don’t think the 1986 Club Mix on Spotify is the original, so I added a YouTube version instead. If Krurze or anyone else has another opinion, please tell me.
Whatever version, the song ranks at #5120 on AM:

418. Steve “Silk” Hurley – Jack Your Body
Year: 1986
Album: Hold On to Your Dream
Biggest Fan: Krurze (#276)

Hey Rob, the version I am most familiar with and based my all-time rank on is indeed the 1986 Club Mix, so you can add that one to the spotify playlist if you want. And it's a 10 for me.

Thanks I have added that one. I've also listened to both that version and the one on YouTube and outside a two minute length difference and a better, clearer mix on Spotify they sound about the same. So, my vote:

Steve "Silk" Hurley - Jack Your Body: 7
I'm not exactly an expert on all things house, but apparently this song was a mayor step in mainstream recognition of this form of dance music, at least in the UK, where it was a big hit. I can see why. This is rarely my favorite type of music because of it's inherent repetitiveness, but it is lively and has lost none of it's power to force the body to move.

Such a weird track! Set the synth to "all", reference Lisa Lisa for some reason, and give us a secret that is definitely not one. All over a very oppressive beat. I don't hate it, I'm just confused.
418. Steve “Silk” Hurley – Jack Your Body - 7
I remember leaving this off my 1986 list, but in retrospect it could have stayed. Pretty good.

The Beach Boys – This Whole World: 7

By 1970 The Beach Boys were comfortable in doing just what was expected of them, for better or worse. In this case, it works quite well, as long as you don't expect any surprises. But nobody ever really did harmonies as well as them.

Kylie Minogue - Shocked: 6

Well, that is a lot better than the last one. Very, very Madonna sounding, so this isn't the kind of stuff I'm into, but it is passable. That bass sound drives me nuts, though. It's sounds extremely familiar as if it is used in another track, but develops differently. Yet which song does it belong to?

Maybe I should be banned from making comparisons but re: Shocked's bassline, Axel F? Or Girls Aloud's Love Machine? I'm not trying to be obtuse, purely saying what I hear. Can see where Safetycat's coming from with M:I too.

Although I do think you'll one day make a comparison that will indeed get you banned, it won't be today. My first association was Axel F too. But nothing quite fits. I even thought of No Limit for a second there.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Gimme Back My Bullets: 7

That title makes me think that Lynyrd Skynyrd already made a reaction song to when guns finally get banned in the US, decades ahead. But apparently it has something to do with fame and getting back on top. Whatever, this is an unabashedly macho rock song, rough and powerful, close to cheesy but done with character. I quite like it, really.

:D I can't stop myself, it's an addiction (metaphors don't count as comparisons, do they? I think I'm on safe ground there)

I've also become instantly partial to Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Back My Bullets as well, despite myself. The swagger helps sell what is standard Southern blues-rock and makes it irresistible on first listen. 8 from me

Reverting to three-word-reviews for my missing scores:

Kylie Minogue - Shocked 4 Little style/substance
The Beach Boys - This Whole World 5 Wilsons on autopilot
Steve 'Silk' Hurley - Jack Your Body (1986 Club Mix) 7 Anthemic yet intricate
Kylie Minogue - Secret (Take You Home) 6 Madison Avenue diction (sorry, comparison already! It's just her phrasing in her verses seems modelled on Don't Call Me Baby, not automatically a bad thing)
Linda Ronstadt - Hurt So Bad 3 Not her best

The Flaming Lips – A Spoonful Weighs a Ton: 7

Although Wayne Coyne's voice here straddles the annoying, there is still a majestic, almost epic feel here, tinged with a little melancholy, that typifies The Flaming Lips for me (disclosure, of their rather vast discography I only now The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi). Ultimately, it is a sweet geeky song.

The Eyeliners – Think of Me: 5
It's certainly full of fire and thunders along nicely, but I can't shake the feeling I have heard a variation of this song so many times before. It sounds a lot like the band Garbage, but more straightforward. Odd that of all lady-punk bands this one got endorsed by Joan Jett. A band like the recent Dream Wife or Amyl & the Sniffers show that there is a lot of life left in punk done by women, but Think of Me does little to make the case.
