Paint It Black is not on my AT list cos it was used in a commercial that I saw like a thousand times and I got tired of it.

A great round two! I’d say I’m much more surprised by this result than by the first one

If people want to keep this going, what should we do next? It’ll be albums as I prefer alternating. Should we do a decades list? A year one? 21st century?

I think it would be fun to do something with a lower patch of albums, like numbers #1001-#1100, but then you lose the likelihood that people would have listened to all of them.

I was thinking that we could do that, too! I'll throw it up soon!

Shouldn't this be Hunky Dory?

In that last batch I was hoping for House of the Rising Sun to win, but Paint It, Black is great too.

I think it's time the world faced the fact that the song is actually called "Paint It Black"... there was an error made in the original pressing of the 45 - later acknowledged as an error and changed on reissues. Why do we insist on continuing to use "Paint It, Black", clearly not the intended title?

That comma never made any sense to me. I didn't know it came from a pressing mistake.

I was actually wondering the same about you and "Strange Fruit." That's my favorite of all of these and the important subject matter alone makes it an odd first elimination. But to each their own ...
I did not take it out, but I am not a real big "Strange Fruit" fan. I have no interest in subject matter or lyrics on records, I just care about the sound of the music and the phonetics of the words. There are many Billie Holiday records that are much better IMO.
I've definitely become more appreciative of lyrics in the last year or so, but I still need to like the music to get into the song. I'm very melodically inclined, and I just don't like the melodies in this song at all. It gets grating at times. "And the twisted mouth" sounds terrible to me. It's one of two songs on this list that are not in my top 10,000.

And I could ask you the same thing! Sympathy for the Devil is my favorite song to be eliminated so far.
I just watched the documentary '13th,' which has a lot of imagery that's very reminiscent of Strange Fruit. I put the song on right afterward, what I used to find unsettling about Holiday's vocals I now found unsettling for different reasons. I doubt I'll ever appreciate her voice enough to put this in my top 100, but I can appreciate why it's such a classic now, and it's at least in my top 10,000 to stay. It does create an aesthetic that fits the subject matter very well.

So now I just need to come around on Unfinished Sympathy.

Unfinished Sympathy, while not my favorite song on that album, just has a beauty to the sound that gets me. It’s trip hop but also feels as though it’s trying to convey something not usually conveyed in the genre, and does it very well.
