Biggest Fan - May 2020

Post by Rob » Fri May 01, 2020 8:12 am

Welcome to the May 2020 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

The Stone Roses – Begging You: 7

From the far less acclaimed follow-up of the legendary self-titled album by The Stone Roses, comes this song that would actually fit rather well on its predecessor. It has that same oddly dance-able vibe and some great feedback to boot. Perhaps not as transcendental as the best tracks on the debut, but otherwise pretty great.

I was a senior in college when Second Coming was released. I was (and am) such a huge fan of their first album and all the singles of that time. I skipped class so I could get the album when the record store opened...and man was I disappointed when I got home. But within all the classic rock riffing, there was this gem. It seems a much more logical progression for the band - a coked-infused version of their ravey 60s psychedelic pop (somewhat similar to what Jesus and Mary Chain had done a few years earlier with Honeys Dead). Unfortunately, there was nothing else like it on the album. But despite the circumstances of it’s release, I still love the song and can always dream of what if.

Dragon slaying metal, pretty literal as far as the lyrics are concerned. Likable, but doesn't lift off into instrumental heaven as the best metal tracks.

469. Yes - Man In A White Car : 2
470. The Offspring - You're Gonna Go Far, Kid : 8 - Formulaic for the Offspring, but the formula works, so why change it ?
471.The Skygreen Leopards - Inland Towns : 6
472. Ann Peebles - A Love Vibration : 7
473. Fludd - Turned 21 : 8 - very catchy sunshine pop
474. Lemon Demon - Touch-Tone Telephone : 7
475. Bryan Adams - Straight From The Heart : 1. Oh Dear.
476. Steriogram - On and On - 7 : Good, punchy indie rock.
477. The Stone Roses – Begging You - 8 : The Roses managed to find their groove with this song. Their second album was way below expectations, but there was magic between Squire and Brown, no matter how hard they tried to sabotage it.
478. Stormwitch – Sword of Sagon - 4
479. Blind Blake - Georgia Bound - 6
480. Harry Nilsson - One - 9 - Really quite surprised this was on someone's list only once (maybe providential  ). If I had played, this song would not have made it into "Biggest Fan"

Me too, I actually went back to the master list to check if this one wasn't accidentally added twice, since this artist is sometimes credited as Harry Nilsson and other times as simply Nilsson. But no, it only got one vote.

Harry Nilsson - One: 8
I'm not always fond of Nilsson. In fact, much of this song's parent album is terrible in my opinion. But this one is great. I've actually learned about One through a cover on Aimee Mann's soundtrack for Magnolia and that has always remained my favorite interpretation, but of course Nilsson already laid down a great foundation, with one of his best playful melodies.

I suspect that’s because Three Dog Night stole the thunder and are now more associated with the song in people’s mind. I do prefer Nilsson’s more stripped down take personally. I give it a 7

481. Randy Newman – It’s a Jungle Out There
Year: 2003
From the TV-series Monk*
Biggest Fan: Prosecutorgodot (#530)
*This song was written as an opening theme for Monk, but it never seems to have been released outside of the series. However, Newman re-recorded the song in 2017 for his Dark Matter album. I have decided to count the Monk version for the moment, unless Prosecutorgodot says otherwise.

Never seen Monk, but this works very well as a funny, catchy short song and I can see it as a show theme. Typical Randy Newman stuff, also.

It's a Jungle Out There - 9

Yes, I prefer the Monk version over the 2017 version, though I do recommend the 2017 album that it appears on, as the other tracks are really quite good (I'd recommend "Sonny Boy").

Monk is an old TV show starring the guy who plays the father in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" which is currently popular. He plays an autistic type who helps the San Francisco police chief solve crimes, usually murders. Clearly with the autistic element there is certainly a mix of comedy, and the overall tone of the show is lighthearted (think of CSI when the team is just ribbing each other, and that's pretty much the whole show). It's certainly not a dark show, though it's not pure foam-and-bubbles, either. If you've ever watched the excellent Thin Man movie series from the 30s and 40s, then you'll probably get something out of the show. It's dated-looking (or should I say "classic"-looking) now, but if you've got time, it's worth checking out a couple episodes to see if it's for you, or just for fun. Each episode is pretty stand-alone, so watch whichever story/murder piques your fancy. There is an underlying story about Monk and his wife, but you don't really need to know too much about that to enjoy the show.

I think the show is like a 6/10. It's certainly not going to blow you away. The theme song is definitely my favorite part of the show. I also like the general sense of love and friendship in the air, because everyone in the show is so goodhearted. I'm a fan of the whodunnit/howdunnit/whydunnit genre, as I find that when this genre gets really good, it's the best genre for using your brain.

In other words, I wouldn't outright say I like it, but it's not a bother to listen to. Monk itself is a very good light crime show. It's the kind of show where you feel like you're watching the same general episode over and over, which is OK as long as you like that one episode.

I haven't watched a lot of movies in this genre (for example I haven't watched The Usual Suspects). I should probably specify that I find WHOdunnits as rather wash-rinse-repeat at this point (for example, I read the Agatha Christie "classic" And Then There Were None and it was the dullest piece of writing I've ever read), and I much prefer HOWdunnits or WHYdunnits, as I find human motivation the most interesting thing in the world.

Movie recommendations for a more traditional style of whodunnits: Again, haven't watched a lot, but I would recommend the Thin Man movies from the 30s and 40s starring William Powell and Myrna Loy (entries #2, 3, and 5 are my favorites) for your mystery fix. "The Illusionist" from the 2000s with Paul Giamatti. Also a modern great: "Knives Out" directed by Rian Johnson.

The other side of the coin - criminals trying to escape: the light-hearted Catch Me if You Can and the much darker The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Other recommendations: the source of my username, the Ace Attorney visual novel franchise, which I cannot recommend highly enough. It seems to me largely based on the classic film 12 Angry Men. I'd recommend starting with the 2nd entry, Justice for All. I could also recommend anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Psycho-Pass, or Steins:Gate (more of a thriller) for sci-fi lovers. You could also just watch Star Trek - Original Series or Next Generation.

The Smiths – That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore

7

This whole album (in its original form without "How Soon Is Now?") is like a bunch of decent album cuts while you keep waiting for a killer song to show up.
