Which is exactly what you predicted on Monday- spooky! :?
Indeed! It's not as if I plan all of these every Sunday and could have known.

The Valentines – The Woo Woo Train: 6
That sax indeed goes a long way to make this song worthwhile. Before it seems a minor doo-wop song, but the sax gives it a sudden swing.

Zeus – How Does It Feel?: 7

I can't really recall the last Zeus song that appeared here - The Sound of You - but apparently I gave that one a 6. This seems more memorable, an old-fashioned song almost in the style of The Beatles or The Kinks, but not quite. It just has enough character of it's own to make it worthwhile.

I expect something more maudlin or schmaltzy. I got something more sincere. Not particularly original, but not a bad listen.

Rarely has African music been used worse than here. It sounds very tacky and the dated production sounds cheap.

Somehow have not heard this before despite being a big hit in New Zealand. Kiwi patriotism is such that if this happens to a song, this means that no-one wanted to keep it around. It is definitely very of its time but I get some enjoyment from it.
Rob wrote: Sun May 17, 2020 3:40 pm Rarely has African music been used worse than here.
I must make a correction here - the musical backing is from the Cook Islands (in the Pacific), and I believe the non-English lyrics are Cook Island Maori. It may be influenced by 80's world music production but it's definitely not African.

(Also, I will be getting to the songs before this soon, just been doing other polls for the moment)

I stand corrected. It makes sense considering her background. It doesn't make it sound better though.

Surprised he sings sincerely this well, as I always have this idea of Ben Folds being completely ironic all of the time. A nice change of pace, but as per usual with this guy he never completely grabs me.

The name of the band is always on the left. Besides, as I said, this is not the first appearance of Vampire Weekend in this game (and far, far from the first mention of this band on this forum; they are quite popular around here).

Vampire Weekend - Walcott: 8
Much better than the previous appearance (which would be exactly a year ago, save for two days), I Think Ur a Contra, which I thought was one of their lesser songs. This certainly belongs to their better songs. I believe someone on this forum once described them as a band that should be annoying, but somehow aren't. That always stuck with me as an apt description of Vampire Weekend. There is almost too much of a precious jingle sound going on here, but it can't help becoming as infectious as all hell.

My post was hyperbole to make the point that these modern groups have names that could easily be song titles, and song titles that could easily be group names. It was a lot easier when the title was like "I Love You" and the group was called The Volumes.

Deep Purple - Burn: 8

One of those songs I'm surprised didn't get more votes. It is a low-key hard rock classic after all. Deep Purple around these years can do no wrong with me. A bit on the proggy side, but still retaining a certain amount of cool.
