515. Prince – U Got the Look
Year: 1987
Album: Sign ‘O’ the Times
Biggest Fan: Bootsy (#712)

Was shocked to see this was not on my list, was sure there was a mistake - it currently is at #604. Looked back, and in 2018, I had it replaced with the title track (which no doubt is deserving). Sometime since, I had switched it back. Gets a 9.25 from me.

Prince – U Got the Look: 7
It seems I rate the Prince tracks that are not deep cuts far better. Sorry, Moonbeam. Although I don't rank this as top tier Prince, this is still very good.

Go for it! :music-listening:

Die Ärtze – Vorbei ist Vorbei: 6
Energetic, but also a little cheesy. However, the guitar solo in the second half salvages it somewhat.

# | Artist | Song | Vote | Remarks
508 | Deftones | Sextape | 7 | Deftones are not my cup of tea, but this dreamy song is quite okay.
509 | Dead Kennedays | Bleed for Me | 8 | Good anti-US government song. Slightly change the lyrics, and there you have an ironic anti-Trump song called "Vote for Me".
510 | Citizen Band | Julia | 8 | Beautiful ballad. In times where punk and new wave controlled the media, this was easy to get overseen.
511 | Grateful Dead | Dire Wolf | 7 | Pleasant folk rock, but please don't murder me.
512 | The Submarines | 1940 | 6 | Band to further look into, but this is not tickling me.
513 | ABBA | Arrival | 5 | Last song of the album, feels like singing before leaving church. Get out!
514 | FIDLAR | Cheap Beer | 5 | OK, got it. Let's move on.
515 | Prince | U Got the Look | 7 | One of his mediocre songs. Still okay.
516 | Die Ärzte | Vorbei ist Vorbei | 7 | You only live once, indeed. Typical and nice Ärzte song.
517 | The Microphones | Map | 6 | Band to further look into, but this is not tickling me.

P.S. my rating system
10 = masterpiece / close to perfection
9 = excellent / outstanding
8 = good / great
7 = okay / nice
6 = weak / mediocre
5 = can live without it
Less than 5 is even worse, so let's say pretty annoying ...

The Microphones - Map: 8

Starts really slowly, almost unnoticeable, but slowly the voice and other instruments creep in. It requires every attention you can muster, but I found it quite touching. I should really hear the parent album, as I'm quite into Mount Eerie.

Fixed a mistake in my previous post. I thought the song belonged to the classic1 990 game of the same title, but in a stupid move SEGA decided to release another game with exactly the same title in 2006, where this song originates from.

Tomoya Ohtani – Boss: Solaris Phase 2: 7
Confession to the gamers out here: I've never been able to get into Sonic games and I mostly disliked the music from the franchise. But not this time. This music is epic and has a great sense of speed and momentum. It's a little cheesy too, but in a good way.

The Submarines - 1940 7 Really like the dub production, might have worked even better as an instrumental?
ABBA - Arrival 5
FIDLAR - Cheap Beer 8 More of a cider man myself but I can still dig it!
Prince - U Got the Look 6
Die Ärzte - Vorbei ist Vorbei 6 Junge and Lasse Redn off the same album are 9s
The Microphones - Map 7
Tomoya Ohtani - Boss: Solaris Phase: 2 5 Only played the first 2 Sonics on the Mega Drive, I'm sure this'd get a higher score if it were from one of them!
All I got inside is vacancy!

510. CITIZEN BAND - Julia (3)
511. Grateful Dead - Dire Wolf (3)
512. The Submarines - 1940 (8) Best song of the lot - lovely voice, nice downbeat song. Need to check this band out.
513. ABBA - Arrival (5)
514. FIDLAR - Cheap Beer (7)
516. Die Ärzte - Vorbei ist Vorbei (7) - Nice discovery - the German language is always a bit hard on the ear (sorry to my German neighbors !) but this isn't the case here.
517. The Microphones - Map (6)
518. Tomoya Ohtani - Boss: Solaris Phase: 2 (6) - Are these sampled guitars ? If so, quite impressive. The keyboards are indeed cheesy enough.
519. Ozzy Osbourne – Suicide Solution (4)

The actual version in my list is from the live Tribute album (recorded in ‘81, released in ‘87). It’s notable for the brilliant guitar solo by Randy Rhoads and is overall heavier than the studio version.

Alright, I've replaced it on the playlist. Though it should be said that the song wasn't listed as live on the master list.

Ozzy Osbourne – Suicide Solution (Live 1981): 4
Pro-suicide messages may be my least favorite of all. In this song it is all rather silly, but it is still not something I feel or even want to feel comfortable with. What's more, despite loving extended guitar solo's I feel that this one is rather bad. The main riff of the song is quite great, but once Randy abandons this in the second it becomes not just a completely different song, but his creativity does not seem to go further than showing how fast he can shred his guitar. No melody, no exploration. I usually hate it when people call extended instrumentals showing off, but in this case it is inevitable to me. It slows the song down immensely, not in the least because he adds breaks so the audience can applaud in appreciation. Free Bird this isn't.

Boyd Bennett and His Rockets – Hit That Jive Jack: 6

To be fair to Ozzy, the song isn’t about committing suicide but about alcoholism and drinking yourself to death. And to be fair to Randy, his solo isn’t meant to be a part of the song per se but his feature solo for the concert. The quality of the solo I guess is up for debate because I think it’s fantastic.

Maybe, but it is placed in context of Suicide Solution. When he has done his solo he returns to the main riff again, which really sounds very different than the solo.

Such things can work. I love the unexpected solo that suddenly pops up in Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker. That one also doesn't seem to have much to do with the main riff. But there I find the solo more exploratory, more a part of the feeling of the overall song, whereas in Suicide Solution live it indeed feels like nothing more than a tacked-on feature for Randy.

U Got The Look by Prince is am afraid to say one of the least played Prince songs on my stereo. That is from an old Prince fan. One interresting thing is that if you take a part of "Hot Thing" and a part of "U Got The Look" voila! You just created Roxette's "The Look" (minus a nanana...)

But if Stevie Wonder got away with "Yaou Are The Sunshine Of My Life" after someone wrote "I See The Shadow Of Your Smile" or something like that...

October 88: Look Sharp

March 87: Sign O The Times ;)

Eva Cassidy – Wayfaring Stranger: 6
It's extremely hard to get excited about Eva Cassidy, but this one is kind of nice. Earlier this year I seemed to hear versions of Wayfaring Stranger everywhere, not in the least because I had a take by Rhiannon Giddens in rotation and because it appeared prominently in the film 1917 as well. There are many versions of it and it is one of the few religious traditionals I really like a lot, regardless my disbelief in a hereafter. It seems like Cassidy believes however, as she sounds more spirited here than usual. Her version is still the most clean and smooth I have yet heard, but it is still worth a listen.
