Re: AMF Classics Edition 84
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - Your opinion is needed
Hi to all
Firstly, Fight the Power was not eligible as it has already been nominated, voted for and eliminated previously.
This got me thinking about this chart...
When I look at the list of songs, I see a vast majority of very popular songs (7 out of 10 are top 500) and I find this a bit disheartening as I feel this was not the purpose of this idea.
So I was wondering if I should change the rules a bit and, for example, allowing only a maximum amount of top 500 songs to be in the top 10.
It boils down to what you want : is this a popularity contest between critically acclaimed songs (and therefore the number of votes will be high) or between other songs, mirroring unacclaimed in a chart format, in a way.
What do you think ? Do you want the chart to change ?

I thought we decided this was ok(?) (Another Girl, Another Planet, Uncertain Smile, Stacey's Frickin' Mom...)spiritualized wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:17 pm Firstly, Fight the Power was not eligible as it has already been nominated, voted for and eliminated previously.
I'm ok with whatever - just wish everyone would listen to all the songs.

Yeah, I thought the rule was that if it was accepted a second time and got eliminated again, then you couldn't nominate it a third time.Brad wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 5:09 pmI thought we decided this was ok(?) Anyway, I do agree that listening to all the songs is the important thing. I don't really care if the songs are famous or not. The one I'm nominating this week definitely isn't (at least not here in the States):
Gabrielle - Dreams

If that's OK with StevieFan, I'll make sure it goes on next week.

Re: AMF Classics Edition 84
Spiritualized: I agree with your assessment that it feels like a popularity contest as opposed to an avenue for listening to songs that we may not be too familiar with. I’d be good with a format similar to the Moderately Acclaimed albums forum. I might be a little off on this but I think albums in the top 500 acclaimed chart are not eligible to compete in that tournament. We might try something similar with songs in the top 1,000 acclaimed not being eligible here. (Just my two cents)
Re: AMF Classics Edition 84
I agree that this game isn't working the way some of us would like. If we say that only some number of top 500 songs can progress, then we'll effectively be running two games under one umbrella. Furthermore, no cut-off based on the AM chart quite gets the right spirit; Was anyone here not totally familiar with 'Yoshimi'? So there is no perfect solution.Rdwdbob wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 11:45 pm Spiritualized: I agree with your assessment that it feels like a popularity contest as opposed to an avenue for listening to songs that we may not be too familiar with. A step in the right direction would be to do something like MA:
- only the first top 1000 AM song nominated each week would be eligible.
- only the first six top AM 1001-10000 songs nominated each week would be eligible.
- that would leave 3 places each week reserved for un-acclaimed songs.

Whatever you do Spiritualized, don't give up. I just found the Dominique A track and the surprisingly good MBV tribute band.

Re: AMF Classics Edition 84
Thanks Dave !
That's exactly the point of my question - Initially the chart was supposed to be a discovery tool - it turned into something else, but then again that's what forumers wanted.
The flipcoin though is that if these rules are set up, people may not enjoy this chart as much and we'll see a drop in votes.
Although what I suspect is happening is that people vote for the most famous songs first, in order of preference, almost automatically, leaving a little room in their remaining votes for the "unranked" ones. This behaviour tilts the results heavily towards the top 1000.
I'm tempted to try DaveC's rules to test them - anyone against the idea ? Start from now ?

Also, won't you have to make an exception for the rule for Fight the Power?

Re: AMF Classics Edition 84
Mmm, I think there's no need to apply some restrictive rules, after all the chart has been going on without them for 84 weeks. I've been only participating from the 61st edition but I've seen some Top 10 songs ("Like a Rolling Stone" or "What's Going On" come to my mind) being eliminated after only 1 or 2 weeks of voting, so probably acclaim is not the main factor influencing the votes.
In my case my nominations so far are the songs on my all time list going backwards from the position #250. I've checked the positions of my nominations on the AM list and I had 4 songs on the Top 1000, 8 songs on the Top 1001-10000 and 11 songs outside the Top 10000.
Having said that I'm OK with the new rules. I will continue nominating the songs on my all-time list. I'll try to be quick when I get to a song appearing on the AM Top 1000.
My nomination of the week: BOB DYLAN “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” (1964, #1851 in AM list)

I hear your point about "acclaimed" songs being kicked out - my problem is that they get replaced by other acclaimed songs. The "discovery" value of the chart is very limited, but I understand why forumers like the format.
We'll see how it goes.
