Laura Mvula - She: 6
I remember in the year this was released, for a short period of time I always downloaded the free song of the week they did on iTunes. This was one of those songs. I had forgotten all about it since then. It's various movements do not flow together all that great. It reminds me of Solange's later work a lot. Still, in the right mood it does have a nice soothing quality to it and Mvula can really sing.

This is not just a Hymie I give a good rating, but a song I actually considered for my own top 1000, albeit thanks to the live version on Live at Montreux. The original single is great too, though, a little more laid-back, but still a stand-out performance of Fats. I even think his recording beats the classic original by Hank Williams, perhaps because his New Orleans-based style fits the subject matter better.

Barbra Streisand – Second Hand Rose: 5
Babra Streisand has a really strange status if you think about it. She was for a period of time, in the seventies, pretty much the biggest star in the world and apparently Billboard once called her the greatest female artist of all time, based on sales. But...
Who still listens to her nowadays? As long as I have been life, I have known Streisand more as an old phenomenon that pops up somewhere every now and then, but her music never seems to get played everywhere. She was probably never someone who would appeal to rock critics or something like Acclaimed Music, but it is remarkable how little her songs have become even classics in pop. I have a bloody hard time naming any of her songs, outside The Way We Where, which I only know because there is a movie with the same title in which she appears as well (I've probably seen more films with Streisand than I have heard songs by her; and I haven't seen that many Streisand films).
But back to Second Hand Rose. It seems odd that to me she uses this song as a showcase for her vocal reach. I don't know how this was originally performed, but the very light touch of the music seems an odd fit for her more heavy vocal acrobatics. It's not bad per se, but it feels like a hint of humor would have worked wonders here. Perhaps Streisand is a precursor to Céline Dion and Whitney Houston, as performers who use each song as a showcase for vocal grandstanding, regardless of music or lyrics? Too soon to tell for me. What I do know is that this isn't my thing.

Fanny Brice recorded the original in 1921 for Ziegfield Follies. The Streisand film Funny Girl (1964) was loosely based on Brice's life.

Hi Rob, it is on Spotify. It's on Shane MacGowan & The Pope's The Snake album, it just makes no mention of Sinéad (so is confusing), but it's the same version (or at least I can't tell the difference) as the single released credited to Shane MacGowan & Sinéad O'Connor.Rob wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 7:32 am This next duet is not Spotify, but you can find it on YouTube.

And it gets a 10 from me as it's one of my favourite ever songs.
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti

Two artists I have enjoyed in the past, but mostly know for their famous work. It's good to know they have some great deep cuts as well. Is it just me or does Sinéad O'Connor sounds very different here than usual? Sweeter, I would say. McGowan couldn't sound different if he tried, I suspect, but I don't want him to. This is a lovely duet.

Re: Biggest Fan - July 2020
I must say I'm stunned at all the 2s and 3s for "A Gentleman's Excuse Me." I wasn't expecting it to be a forum favorite, but I was thinking more along the lines of a lot of 4s and 5s. I would like to know why so many people seem to hate the song so much. (Especially since a lot of the poor ratings are coming from people whose taste I typically align with.)

This was originally released by the Pogues (with Cait O'Riordan on vocals), featured in the Sid & Nancy soundtrack in the mid-'80's. I had completely forgotten about it for a couple decades, though the Pogues version got a lot of play in my circles back in the day:
When I saw this on the spotify list, I just assumed it was my nom (oops)

I thought I already voted for this yesterday. Pretty much everything from Get Happy!! is a 7, a very consistent record of short songs were none of them are truly amazing, but all are so solid that it elevates the album to an 8.
Can – Mary, Mary So Contrary: 7
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, indeed. Pretty good, rambling song, but these guys would do even better later.

Haven't heard a lot of Can but if this track is indicative, it doesn't really make me want to hear more.
