Haven't heard a lot of Can but if this track is indicative, it doesn't really make me want to hear more.
Seems we are in the minority here as the rest of the ratings on this are good.

Haha! Yeah I don't get the appeal! Maybe someone can explain it to me...

William Ackerman - Remedios ... If you go back far enough, I was not the music buyer in the house, and we just had a tape deck and a radio in daily use. I would play this in the near darkness of the early morning as the first song from Windham Hill Records Sampler '82, and it had a strong, moody atmosphere to it. Then it would lead into George Winston's "Blossom / Meadow," another great song that somehow seemed of a piece. That was probably Windham Hill's best single-disc sampler (also with Alex De Grassi's "Clockwork").

(No rating -- I'm not inclined to rate my own selection)

William Ackerman - Remedios: 7

It's somewhat reminiscent of American primitivism; perhaps it might even be an example of it. I like the genre a lot, with it's meandering mood setting. But the best of the genre, like the influential John Fahey or someone more recent like William Tyler, really transport me to another world, which did not happen here. Still, there is some beauty here and I can see why you'd fall for this at the right time in the right setting.

Boney M. - Rasputin: 6

A song about a real-life Russian mystic who swindled his way into the life of the czars with tragic consequences, but instead of a Russian opera or lamentation it is a campy seventies disco song produced in Germany, with a group consisting of people from tropical islands... If that sounds like a joke, well, the song does too. This is one of the most supremely silly things I have ever heard, especially when you listen to the lyrics and keep in mind the real events it is based on. If humanity ever invents a time machine I think the best use of it is to take this song and the first clip StevieFan posts above here and show it to the real Rasputin and the czar family. There are few things I would like to see more than their response.

Whether the song is any good hardly matters, as this exists in a world beyond reason, let alone taste. I enjoy it, although as a sort of joke. Maybe it will become a guilty pleasure. I'm mostly surprised I haven't heard this before. I'm very familiar with the other Boney M hits through my youth and this was another one of their hits apparently, but it didn't sound familiar at all.

I'm unfamiliar with this band, but if this song is representative of their usual sound I sure want to check out more. I love blues rock like this, with it's heavy guitar sound. The psyched out late-sixties sound also really help to set the mood. Rock at it's most awesome.

Shane McGowan & Sinéad O'Connor - Haunted 6
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - High Fidelity 8.5 Has at times been amongst my top handful of his songs but it's eclipsed on the same album by Riot Act at the minute
(The) CAN - Mary, Mary So Contrary 5
William Ackerman - Remedios 8
Slowdive - Rutti 6
Boney M. - Ra-ra-rasputin 5 Daddy Cool is the jewel in Boney M's crown!
Spooky Tooth - Better by You, Better than Me 7

Maybe it says more about me and my tendency to lean too quickly to one side or another on music, not to mention my narrow frames of reference, but I gave the Fish song a 3 as I was expecting the ballad to be a prelude to an epic rock-out at the end, rather than it being the whole song.

I found I had a lot of shared taste with you back when we did top songs by Hall of Fame Inductees and I'm sure your opinions are in the same neck of the woods as most of the forum most of the time, so I wouldn't worry about it (you've no doubt forgotten all about this anyway, considering you posted this nearly a week ago!)

Thanks for the explanation, mileswide. I literally like every music genre, so my taste is going to align a lot with everyone in the forum, while having many of my personal favorites (from the less-acclaimed genres) reviled by most. I do appreciate your feedback. (And I haven't forgotten about this. Sad as it is, I've still given this a lot of thought, since the song means a lot to me. I think in the entire game I've given about 3 songs a 3 or less. For me to give a song that low a rating it needs to either morally offend me (like "Blurred Lines") or insult my intelligence (like "Baby Shark"). That's probably why I was so shocked and felt the need to speak up.)

That'd be more like a 1 for me. I'd forgotten I'd even awarded a 1 on here but I've done so at least once- for Yankee Doodle and that was only because I didn't consider it a proper song (nothing against anyone who thinks otherwise!) I don't give out 1s casually though.

I'm sure if I heard Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, I'd find something to turn my head. Plus, my scores on here aren't set in stone, they're time capsules and can always be mutable. A lot of my most treasured music insults my intelligence, so I can't agree with you there!

It’s all kind of arbitrary for me. Anything between a 1 and a 3 really only separates itself by how quickly I could imagine skipping it on a playlist or changing the radio station if it came on. By that margin, even though I really dislike - just as an example - “Trampoline” by Shaed, if it came on an alternative station and there was the possibility of it being followed by something better as opposed to commercials, I’d suck it up and sit through it. As opposed to, say, “Trumpets” by Jason Derulo, which I keep as one of my early-morning alarms just because I know I’ll want to turn it off immediately the moment I register that it’s playing. So “Trampoline” would be like a 4 while “Trumpets” is more like a 2. 1’s have to be incompetent more than anything, and in some cases they circle around to being songs I relisten to occasionally just to make sure they’re as bad as I remember them being (like “Every Loser Wins” by Nick Berry or “Havin’ My Baby” by Paul Anka).

I just checked my spreadsheet with 36,600 songs I've rated 1-10 over the years. I've only given 121 songs a 1 (which includes 2 that I gave a 0) and StevieFan named one of them: "Trumpets" by Jason Derulo.

My two zeroes are a spoken word record from the '60's, "An Open Letter to My Teenage Son." (I don't think any song before or since has had a message I found so offensive.) The other (ironically, since I support the cause) is "Earth" by Little Dickie. As an environmentalist, it depressed me to no end just how badly that song was executed. It almost came off to me as a parody mocking the cause. (Though I know that isn't how it was intended.)

4 seems generous for a song you "really dislike." Curious what your beef is with that song.

I wouldn't say my scores are arbitrary, they can just vary based on my mood or what kind of music I want to listen to at that point in time. Besides, Riding Solo's got to be Derulo's worst, hasn't it? I'm not against all Autotune but his use of it on the chorus is excruciating.

Looked this one up, damn that’s quite a doozy of some lyrics.

(I don't think any song before or since has had a message I found so offensive.) The other (ironically, since I support the cause) is "Earth" by Little Dickie. As an environmentalist, it depressed me to no end just how badly that song was executed. It almost came off to me as a parody mocking the cause. (Though I know that isn't how it was intended.)
Those are two songs I would definitely find worthy of a 0 for more or less the same reasons as you.

Heh, I actually don't mind "Ridin' Solo" that much. Worst is a horse race between "Wiggle" and "Whatcha Say," with "Trumpets" and "In My Head" contenders as well ("In My Head" is a 4 for the same reason as "Trampoline": not a song I skip the moment it comes on, but not one I take much pleasure in either).

Somebody pointed out that "Trampoline" basically sounds like it was written specifically for MacBook commercials, with that as its main function and being an actual song second. Its very corporate brand of artsy detachment - enough to sound cool for an alternative station, not enough to be too alienating for a commercial designed to convey shiny, metallic sleekness - really annoys me. There are lots of songs I like that are very explicitly commercial (you might say the majority of the songs I like are very explicitly commercial, for better or worse), but any song that tries too hard to have it both ways - authentic AND corporate - by circumstance or by design gets on my nerves. Faux-authenticity with nothing to back it up. And taking that element away, it's also just dry and joyless, which feels bizarre for a song about bouncing on a trampoline (and if it's a metaphor for something darker, like "Chandelier," it's not a very effective metaphor). And the way the lead singer goes "I've never been SO HIGH" drives me crazy. They probably have good tracks, but that one I never got into. I can't say I viscerally loathe it enough to rip out the knob trying to change the station, but having it higher than a 4 feels wrong to me. It's low enough to be clearly, identifiably bad, but not so low as to be irredeemable.

I'd forgotten all about In My Head, possibly because it's such a facsimile of Lady Gaga's Just Dance that it doesn't technically exist. Whatcha Say isn't that bad! (though it's still a generous 5 at most) It may be the standard-bearer of his sensitive scumbag schtick but it gets mileage out of the Imogen Heap sample, which is about as creative as he ever gets. We should be careful discussing him too much though, it could lead to a Derulo poll!
