Today Stereolab’s fourth appearance, making them one of the most common artists in this game, perhaps surprisingly.

Awwwww

Stereolab's first single ever. And a cracker at that - 10/10.
For the anecdote, I was part of the team that brought Stereolab for their first live date in France on the 07th of March 1992, at the Ubu in Rennes.
Fantastic concert with 600 people (far too many for the venue) and many encores (they hadn't written that many songs at the time). Spent a bit of time with Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane, lovely people.

Good memories - the song itself is a modern take on the Velvet's droning tunes hence right in my alley.

Stereolab – Super-Electric: 8

One of their best I have heard by them yet. It's perhaps a bit in the style of Sonic Youth, but it makes for damn great mood music.

You missed yesterday's!

Raekwon, featuring Method Man, Ghostface Killah & Cappadonna – Ice Cream: 7
The rapping and the production is really strong, but the lyrics don't particularly grab me, despite all the ice cream puns.

Kero Kero Bonito - Break: 6
One of those groups I have heard about a lot before without actually hearing their music. Apparently they are inspired by J-pop, so I expected something like that, but I got some indie song of the type that were more common ten years before Break released. Indeed, there are some Japanese lyrics here, but it feels more western than I would have guessed. It's a cute song, but not of the type that sets my world on fire.

The Alan Parsons Project – Eye in the Sky: 5
A mild classic here. It is always present in the Dutch phenomenon the Top 2000 of Radio 2 and it seems to be loved by quite a few people, but I feel it is a missed opportunity. The lyrics are quite menacing, but the song itself is very tame both musically and vocally. I want a creepy cover of this. Perhaps it already exist, I will check that later. As it is, Eye in the Sky is mostly nice background music.

Beck - Chemtrails: 6

Beck can be a tough one to rate every now and then. Chemtrails is one of those songs of his that is clearly original, well executed, but to me just not that engaging. I tend to like his more outspoken crazy stuff the most and this is not quite that, even if it doesn't make for a bad listen.

The next song is an odd one, as it was created for the English version of Kiki’s Delivery Service, but does not appear in all English releases of the film. As far as I can tell only people who saw the film during a specific window of time could have learned about it. It is not on Spotify as part of the film’s soundtrack, but it is on YouTube.

614. Sydney Forest – I’m Gonna Fly
Year: 1998/ 2000*
Album: Collected Film and Television Works*
Biggest Fan: prosecutorgodot (#588)
YouTube-link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zchaMoJenXY&ab_channel=LociMeth
* This song was first released as part of the 1998 English dub of the 1989 Japanese movie Kiki’s Delivery Service. However, as far as I can tell, the first and only release of it outside of the context of the movie is on the Sydney Forest film compilation mentioned above.
