Sydney Forest – I’m Gonna Fly: 6
This type of bright self-empowerment ballad seemed to accompany every American children's movie in the nineties, so why not paste one onto a English dub of a Japanese film? To be fair, anime themselves are equally prone to using these type of songs to this very day and Kiki's Delivery Service already did it in 1989. The song at least fits the theme of the movie itself. It's likable enough, with Forest's rather down-to-earth vocals, even if she also limits the songs possibility to really soar. Maybe I would have liked it a little more if I had seen Kiki in English when I was a kid, but I only saw it as an adult in Japanese, so that possibility is lost.

My 2507th favorite of all time.

Third Eye Blind's first album was a favorite during my trip to Europe awhile back.

I'm far from a Duke Ellington expert, but I have yet to hear something by him that is not great. Jazz magic from start to finish.

Kero Kero Bonito - Break 6
OutKast - Happy Valentine's Day 5
The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky 4

Beck - Chemtrails 9 When I saw the artwork for Modern Guilt on the BF playlist, I was crossing my fingers it'd be Chemtrails! A complete diversion in his already varied career but moody and blissful, not least when the drums kick in. Presently #750 on my disorganised AT list.

Sydney Forest - I'm Gonna Fly 3
Third Eye Blind - Losing a Whole Year 4
Duke Ellington - The Tattooed Bride 5

You all probably noticed this guy Hymie voting here every day, but there was also a time he used to be a big provider of content for this game, with a song of his list appearing here seemingly every week. Today we get to relive such glory, with a new oldy from his list, the first in a long time. You also find this one bubbling on AM.

I'm thinking that to honor Hymie for being a loyal and reliable participant in this project that there should be a "Hymie Week," where we vote on nothing but items from his list for 7 days in a row!

Amazing idea! Sadly, the Randomizer makes rules.

Ana Laíns – Quatro Caminhos: 7
Well sing, good tune, quite good.

Hank Ballard & The Midnighters: 6
Catchy enough, but not something I'd personally play again.

Queen – Tenement Funster: 5
It's odd that out of three Queen songs that have appeared here two of them did not feature Freddy Mercury on vocals. And really, it immediately doesn't sound like Queen anymore. This sounds like your standard early seventies hard rock song. Now I like this genre, but this song isn't really hard or heavy enough to stand with the best of them and it also doesn't have one of Queen's more memorable hooks or melodies.

The next song is by an artist who by now is as controversial as you can get. The song itself ranks on AM – sorta – as part of Trapped in the Closer (Chapters 1-5) at #5353.

621. R. Kelly – Trapped in the Closet (Chapter 1)
Year: 2005
Album: TP-3: Reloaded
Biggest Fan: PlasticRam (#156)

R. Kelly – Trapped in the Closet (Chapter 1): 2

This really doesn't work on any level. The song is about an asshole and the situation is comical to me, but Kelly sings it like it is the greatest tragedy that ever happened to anyone, especially near the end. Perhaps that fits the tone of what comes in the next chapters? I don't know, as although this was apparently a hit I heard it for the first time only now and only knew of the song thanks to a South Park reference.
What is equally weak is that there is no poetry to the lyrics. No real rhyme, flow or any kind of meter to make it sound good. It sounds like ordinary dialogue, but instead of spoken word it is sung. Then there is the music which I guess we could file under minimalism, as there is very little of it and it doesn't help make things more interesting. One of those songs I'm surprised about that is managed to become a hit, even with R. Kelly's star status in mind. It's not exactly catchy or anything.

Kyuss - Thumb: 7
Pretty cool. The vocals indeed aren't the greatest, but it sounds very big.
