Albums and Songs of 1978 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

In 1978
Was in a hotel in Notting Hill Gate
Welcome to the 70s! This month, we will be looking to find the best songs and albums from 1978. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

On to '78!

Songs:
1 | Earth, Wind and Fire | September
2 | Boney M. | Rasputin
3 | Buzzcocks | Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)?
4 | Elvis Costello and the Attractions | Radio, Radio
5 | Queen | Don't Stop Me Now
6 | Kate Bush | Wuthering Heights
7 | Toto | Hold the Line
8 | Patti Smith Group | Because the Night
9 | The Clash | (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
10 | Ramones | I Wanna Be Sedated
11 | The Undertones | Teenage Kicks
12 | The Cars | Just What I Needed
13 | Gloria Gaynor | I Will Survive
14 | Blondie | One Way or Another

17 | Sylvester | (You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real
18 | The Rolling Stones | Beast of Burden
19 | The B-52's | Rock Lobster
20 | Chic | Le Freak

Says a lot that this was probably the hardest list to make yet! So much good music to choose from yet again. Almost had a heart attack when I remembered Billy Joel also put out an album in '78, but it's his most overrated album, so I'm good (Zanzibar is fine, Big Shot is good but overplayed, My Life never did anything for me, and Honesty might be his worst single ever).
Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - Sir Duke (1976)

Random question that won't likely affect anything: does the Misfits' Static Age count? The album was recorded in 1978 but not released until 1996, apparently because they couldn't find a label willing to release it. It seems weird to consider that a 90s album, just like it feel weird to me to consider The Smile Sessions a 2010s album. Either way, it's one of the best early examples of hardcore punk.

Another question: for those voting for Buzzcocks' Another Music in a Different Kitchen, are you considering the version that ends at Moving Away from the Pulsebeat or the one that includes four additional songs, including the classics Orgasm Addict and What Do I Get? The version on Spotify that I listened to, which I guess is based on a remastered version, has those four extra songs, which would vault the album for me from a very good punk album to one of the best punk albums.

I owned it on vinyl so I'm aware that it ended with Moving Away from the Pulsebeat, and that is the album I vote for. The extra tracks don't really add anything for me anyway.

I think usually we count it in the year it was released, but if you want to put it on your list I'll count it.

I thought this song was 79 but I just noticed it was released as a single in 78. It's going on my list.

This is a really good song, and I've never seen it mentioned anywhere else. It's a year with plenty of lost classic-type songs (Starry Eyes, Kiss Me Again, and City Slang are a few off the top of my head), but I wonder what happened here.

Jackson wrote: Fri Oct 09, 2020 7:51 pm Another question: for those voting for Buzzcocks' Another Music in a Different Kitchen, are you considering the version that ends at Moving Away from the Pulsebeat or the one that includes four additional songs, including the classics Orgasm Addict and What Do I Get? The version on Spotify that I listened to, which I guess is based on a remastered version, has those four extra songs, which would vault the album for me from a very good punk album to one of the best punk albums.
I normally specify if I prefer an alternative version to an album/song but I'd neglected to do so for my AT ballot when including AMiaDK (that looks like a question I don't want everyone to answer at once).

The four tracks might feel a bit tacked-on but Buzzcocks were at their best being a singles band, so I'd willingly sacrifice the cohesion of the original album to have the 2 A-sides, especially What Do I Get
