U2 – The Miracle (of Joey Ramone): 5
2014 already? The Apple 'scandal' feels like only two years ago or so. Anyway, this song never made much sense to me as a tribute to Joey Ramone as it doesn't sound to me like anything he'd consider. Now I'm not an expert of the Ramones by any stretch, but what I've heard by them didn't sound like they were into making fancy grand statements. Instead a certain simplicity and even aloofness seemed to be their thing. Bono seems to have heard something else than me, that much is clear. Did the Ramones really use riffs like this? I don't know. Maybe it's not the point. It feels a little overcooked, though. I thought the album had it's moments (but haven't heard any of it since 2014), but this actually seemed one of the weaker ones for me at the time.

Maybe, but the playlist options of Spotify work better than YouTube.

Small Faces – Wide Eyed Girl on the Wall: 6
It's appealing and light, but not particularly noteworthy.

This song seems somewhat caught between his earlier 'plastic soul' songs and his upcoming dance work. A pretty cool mix.

U2 - The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)

6

I felt like this song could have used a bigger arrangement than just the band playing. Or maybe that just means that the song isn't that great. If I remember my anecdotes correctly, U2 in their early days scored a crucial TV appearance by playing a TV producer "Glad to See You Go" by the Ramones and not correcting the takeaway that it was their own song (and then they just played their own song, "Street Mission," during the actual TV appearance).

I wouldn't call it uplifting, as I feel there is a dark thread running through this tune, as suggested by the title. Yet it is undeniable spirited and full of fire.

On the one hand I am glad to present one of my picks today, but on the other hand I halfway expect that other people voted for this same song but just signed it under Dylan alone. The solo Dylan and the one with Cash are very distinct, but I always thought that the Cash collaboration was more popular. The again, this version is only bubbling under on AM and the original is ranked.
Anyway, it is the third appearance by Dylan and the first by Cash.

Maya Jane Coles – Simple Things: 4
I can be long and short about it, but this is simply a case of: not my thing.

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash – Girl from the North Country: 10

Girl from the North Country has more than a little similarity to Scarborough Fair, best known as done by Simon & Garfunkel. They're both based on the same traditional English song, although Dylan is a bit more liberal with it. Simon & Garfunkel's song, which I also adore, is a weird duet where both artists sing another song. When Dylan decided to record his version with Cash it also gave off-beat results. The two singers seem almost at odds with each other (I used to fantasize that they were rivals for the Girl's heart), but both sing so warmly and appealingly that the ramshackle quality almost becomes something appealing. The beauty of the original melody keeps things in line, while the two singers seem to go their own directions (Dylan especially). The end result is one of the most giddily appealing love songs I know. The original Dylan solo recording on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan on the other hand never had that much appeal to me. It's fine, but doesn't stand out as much as the Cash collab.

For people who like this I also recommend last year's addition to the Dylan Bootleg Series: Travellin' Thru. The largest part of that collection contains the other songs that Dylan and Cash recorded during the session that gave us Girl from the North Country. By a coincidence I was re-listening to it just this weekend and it contains more of these wacky nuggets, including a very off-the-cuff sounding rendition of Wanted Man that is glorious.

The Small Faces - Wide-Eyed Girl on the Wall 8 All plaudits to Zombeels, this is a rare gem!
David Bowie - Because You're Young 6
Matthew Sweet - Winona 5
GoGo Penguin - Protest 6
Prince - MARZ 7 Would've made my Prince ballot if I'd heard it in time!
Maya Jane Coles - Simple Things 6
Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash - Girl from the North Country 8 For me, it's in the shadow of the original, which sees Dylan baring his soul to a woman with which he has no chance of redemption in a way he would rarely do with such vulnerability in his guarded, ironic electric period, however great electric Dylan is. But I've always found the Cash duet version endearing, none more so than this performance on The Johnny Cash Show https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1qaym4 Unquestionably your best choice yet, Rob!
