Haim – If I Could Change Your Mind: 4
Ah yes, my least favorite trend of last decade (which seems to carry over to this decade): songs done in the style of either the eighties or nineties without a personal spin or twist and completely inseparable from those eras. I'll never understand the point of this, but I'm the last one who still believes that in a general sense eighties pop was a nadir. Remember when everybody said so?

You're not the last one. I'm right there with you - the 80s are by far my least favorite decade since the 50s.

650. Yo La Tengo – I Heard You Looking: (8)
651. Sylvester – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real): (8) - Guilty pleasure, right there !!!

654. Haim – If I Could Change Your Mind: (4)
655. Tocotronic – Die Idee is gut, doch die Welt nicht bereit (3). Disappointed by the Germans' first album, which I listened to recently. It's bland and I'm surprised at its acclaim.

Tocotronic – Die Idee ist gut, doch die Welt noch nicht bereit:
While I do agree that the album definitely has its low points and is probably a bit overrated, its best songs (Freiburg, Drüben auf dem Hügel, this one) are amongst the greatest Noise Pop/Lo-Fi songs I know. The earnest and completely unpretentious lyrics (as opposed to later Tocotronic) and the very simple instrumentation make these a real treat if you're into rawness and immediacy. A 10/10 for me.

Also, I'd like to update Girl from the North Country to a 9/10. Indeed pretty incredible that this got only one vote, but maybe people really used a combined vote for this and the Dylan solo version.

Jamie T - Sheila: 1
Good heavens, blue-blooded murder of the English tongue!

But seriously:
Jamie T - Sheila: 7
Actually unmistakably English. And a lot of fun, even a bit goofy.

Jacques Dutronc – Les Cactus: 7
Also a bit goofy, but this unmistakably French. And quite catchy.

The sample on Spotify is not very good, it's of the break.

Here's the full record. For those who care about lyrics this is like the 1953 version of "Wet Ass Pussy."

They were huge in the Black community for a few years. They had 7 singles that were top 10 on the Billboard R&B chart including two number ones. In 1953 they were one of the top 5 acts on the R&B chart with two number ones and 2 other top fives.

Yes! It surprises me that their legacy isn't greater... why aren't they discussed as much as similar artist from the same era - The Drifters, The Coasters, Famous Flames, Frankie Lyman, etc. - 10+ years of solid singles and you hardly ever hear about them? And do we know why the quotations around the 5? I need to get ahold of the "Soul & Swagger" box set...
