Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
My daily updates and score corrections are done and the world is a brighter place because of it. I also stream-lined the nonsense that is the song titles from Days of Future Passed to a more manageable form.
By the way, I enjoy your write-ups.
You're welcome! I don't know the song, but it is likely better than the Stanley Kramer film of the same title.
The critics actually have Where Are We Know? as the top pick of the album. What you saw was the inclusion of my own votes already to save some time. I really like Where Are We Know?, but I like a couple of songs on there even more.
I mean I'm aware of this, but the song holds up beautifully for me.FrankLotion wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 11:21 pm Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd): I do like Free Bird a lot but it's pretty bloated and at this point is more the butt of bad jokes from Boomers and Millennials alike.
I'm not completely sure how to handle every different version of albums, but I think counting Triad as an album cut for Notorious Byrd Brothers goes a bit far, as it was only added as a bonus track 30 years later. The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers: The lesser of their two albums from 1968 is still very good, my favorites have always been Draft Morning and Triad.
By the way, I enjoy your write-ups.

Again only one album for me today.
763. Slowdive – Slowdive
Sugar for the Pill
Star Roving
The album is at once pretty consistent, but also has these two clear standouts, with perhaps Falling Ashes as a third.

773. Iggy Pop | The Idiot
I agree with the official picks "China Girl" and "Nightclubbing".
Don't understand why Lust for Life is more acclaimed/well-liked.

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
821. Jon Hopkins – Immunity
Open Eye Signal - Immunity (is that one pretty much a Sigur Ros song ? Yes, but it's gorgeous so it takes my vote)
806. The Avalanches – Wildflower
Because I'm Me - Subways
775. Metallica – Ride the Lightning
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Fade to Black
768. Toots & the Maytalls – Funky Kingston
If we include the US version, Pressure Drop and Love Is Gonna Let Me Down.
Otherwise : Funky Kingston and Sit Right Down
765. At the Drive-In – Relationship of Command : that one goes with Rage Against the Machine's self titled and a few others where the most acclaimed song is one of my least favorite.
Quarantined - Enfilade
764. Meat Puppets – Meet Puppets II
Plateau (I haven't listened to the album for a while so I'd need another listen to pick another song)

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
Oh boy, I seemed to have voted for a lot of albums in this section...
For Ride the Lightening, The Idiot, and Let's Dance my favorites align with the critics so I vote for For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Nightclubbing, China Girl, Modern Love, and Let's Dance.
Toots & the Maytals - Funky Kingston: I don't mind if we use both the original and the 1975 track list for this, personally the only song I would draw from the U.S. release is Pressure Drop but it doesn't seem right to vote for that when it came out so many years earlier. Instead, I'll vote for Funky Kingston and Pomps & Pride.
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners: One of my favorites, Brilliant Corners should stay and I'd love it if Pannonica made it into the playlist because it isn't quite as spare as the rest of the album.
Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II: My preference goes to what seem to be the two most popular tracks, the odd Plateau and the beautiful instrumental Aurora Borealis.
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World: Just noticed this is back on Spotify! This and Phantom Power were taken off the platform and stayed that way for years so it's a nice surprise. I won't be upset at all if Juxtapozed with U gets picked for the playlist but I have always loved the great two song opener in Alternate Route to Vulcan Street and Sidewalk Serfer Girl.
Etta James - At Last!: There are few songs that I can think of that is as saturated in films, shows, high school dances, weddings, etc. here in the U.S. than At Last. I must've listened to it hundreds of times but every time I hear it it elevates the moment. Close second for me is A Sunday Kind of Love.
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma: Gonna have to agree with Jackson, this was way too far down the list. Nothing sounded like Pickled! when it came out and it's still a good showcase for a lot of Flying Lotus' hallmarks (frantic breakbeat, prominent bass line from Thundercat, etc.). Do the Astral Plane sounds incredible live if you ever see him in concert but I still find myself getting just as wrapped up in it when I listen on my headphones.
The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes: Well this one's pretty easy, is there actually anyone that doesn't like Be My Baby? I've always been partial to Walking in the Rain so that gets my second vote.
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People: I was happy to see this show up on the list, Cause = Time should stay and fan-favorite Pacific Theme should be added.
Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (III, Melt): This was a pretty tough sell for me after growing up on So but I've come around to it in a big way in recent years. I like No Self Control and of course Games Without Frontiers.
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head: I think So What'Cha Want might be the only time the Beasties ever sounded close to "badass" but they really nailed it with that heavy beat and energy they bring. I don't really have a firm second choice but I always liked Gratitude which stands as a good punk rock track.
For Ride the Lightening, The Idiot, and Let's Dance my favorites align with the critics so I vote for For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Nightclubbing, China Girl, Modern Love, and Let's Dance.

Er, I can't post the updates to votes, not can I reply to anyone immediately, because the editor has become... weird. I don't know if it just here or everywhere? Maybe this isn't the place, but is anyone else's forum acting really strange?

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
The Black Keys - Brothers: I feel like the first and last tracks, Everlasting Light and These Days, are excellent and do a great job encapsulating the different styles of the album.
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire: Pride (In the Name of Love) is a must, Bad has always been a favorite of mine.
Four Tet - Rounds: During the first leg of Hands I probably would have thought it was an actual band playing if I didn't know who Four Tet was, it sounds so alive with a swirl of different instruments and then organically introduces more synthetic sounds to the mix, it's his best song in my opinion. Unspoken has a similarly kaleidoscopic approach but extended to an epic 9-minute length.
Fugazi - Repeater: I was disappointed their 13 Songs collection didn't make the cut (though I could see if people don't consider it an album) but the inclusion of both The Argument and Repeater was a nice surprise! Fugazi famously had an enviably consistent level of quality to every release but Repeater's a standout, my introduction to the band was Turnover but Merchandise is the song that always comes to mind when I think of the band. Side note, I just found out that Repeater eventually became a Platinum selling album in the U.S.! Never knew this was such a hit.
Bon Iver - 22, A Million: Man, I hated this album at first, it was a hard sell to imagine the same guy who wrote minimal folk songs alone in a cabin was now basing his music on loud and sometimes abrasive electronics. However, I came to find that the deliberate abstraction of his voice and messaging of the album, and especially on 33 "God" and 29 #Strafford APTS, was actually a tremendous enhancement. Here the beautiful orchestration is further amplified while keeping the satisfying emotional heft that his previous work so openly did well. (i,i on the other hand is a step too far for me I'm afraid).
Fatboy Slim - You've Come a Long Way, Baby: I remember The Rockefeller Skank being played a lot growing up and I'd say it's still incredibly fun today, Gangster Trippin is similarly enjoyable and the spinning plates of samples is an impressive precursor to what the Avalanches mastered a couple years later.
Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 3: A Christmas fucking miracle indeed! I felt a little bad taking a break from my family on Christmas morning to listen to this but at least it was worth it. Some of RTJ's albums are immediately exciting and gratifying, RTJ 3 has moments of that but it's ironic that music that can be this blunt and pummeling can be a grower. The beats knocked harder than ever but they also snuck in some welcome social commentary along with the expectedly crude braggadocio. Anyways, Legend Has It sounds amazing and has a great thought-provoking music video and Thieves! (Screamed the Ghost) is unfortunately as relevant as ever here in the U.S. as it was in 2016.
The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday: No surprises here, So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star and My Back Pages clearly stand above the rest for me.

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
To be clear I think Free Bird is amazing! Unfortunately I think it's just been oversaturated so much in the States that a lot of people have grown sick of it.Rob wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 9:11 pmI mean I'm aware of this, but the song holds up beautifully for me.FrankLotion wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 11:21 pm Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd): I do like Free Bird a lot but it's pretty bloated and at this point is more the butt of bad jokes from Boomers and Millennials alike.
Also I had no idea Triad was a bonus track! I guess the CD I had must have been a deluxe version, I'll gladly settle for Change is Now instead.
P.S.: Thanks! I always liked reading your reviews and I figured if I was ever going to do any writeups for albums it might as well be for the ones I like so much that I put them on a top 1000 list.

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
Last time I couldn't update all the scores on here because of the site troubles, but now everything is up to date again. The playlist too!
I have decided on a rule for albums with various versions. Different versions that came out within 5 years of the original release count, otherwise I count the original release. The exception are cases where some songs are clearly mentioned as bonus tracks, as with many major pop releases nowadays.
Something completely different, but am I the only one who finds the song titles of Bon Iver's 22, A Million absolutely insufferable? I'm sure the music on it is fine, but I suddenly became very aware of the fact that the song titles have kept me from giving it a shot. It's the only album I can think of where that is the case.
To combine the US and Jamaican version of this album is rather awkward as most of the songs on both versions are different, which is odd. Still, I'm going to count both, because who knows who voted for which version in this poll?

Re: Collaborative playlist for the AMF top 1000 albums
And here my votes for the last 50:
749. The Black Keys – Brothers
Tighten Up
Ten Cent Pistol
One of those albums I could have voted for many songs, although Tighten Up is clearly my favorite. It just has an odd sense of movement that appeals to me. Ten Cent Pistol feels like a curious noir track.
743. Fugazi – Repeater
Turnover
Repeater
Turnover is one of those openers that sets the scene, but the very off-beat rhythm of Repeater is something special that hooked me to this album.
741. Fishmans - Long Season
Long Season
I know this album has only one song, but it is absolutely the best song on there!
719. The National – Alligator
Mr. November
Looking for Astronauts
Mr. November is obvious, with a rare moment where Berninger loses control. Looking for Astronauts has a strange romantic appeal to me.
713. Lou Reed & John Cale – Songs for Drella
I Believe
Hello, It’s Me
Very much an album were every piece matters to make a great whole, but I still have these two clear favorites. I Believe is a breathtaking call for revenge on the woman who shot Andy Warhol and Hello, It's Me is a heart-felt coda to the life story of Drella.
704. Gene Clark – No Other
No Other
Strength of Strings
Despite being a solo project, this album has a harmonious feeling, illustrated best by these two songs.
And yes, the one vote for Enema of the State by Acroamor has been counted already (he really voted far in advance in his first and only post; don't copy this behavior please).

720. Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
Everyday (the bass going up and down is gorgeous, the drums simple but powerful and I don't know what the other instrument is but it complements the mood perfectly... my 2nd favorite Yo La Tengo track) - You Can Have It All (Our Way to Fall is gorgeous too so I really won't mind if it makes the cut)
708. A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
Luck of Lucien - Can I Kick It ?
706. Kyuss – Kyuss [Welcome to Sky Valley]
Supa Scoopa and Might Scoop - Demon Cleaner (surprised that's not the most popular one on Spotify)
703. The Decemberists – Picaresque
The Engine Driver - 16 Military Wives

Philip Glass – Koyaanisqatsi: Vessels, Pruitt Igoe.
Buzzcocks – Another Music in a Different Kitchen: I Don't Mind, Fast Cars.
The National – Alligator: Abel, Mr. November.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Tender Prey: The Mercy Seat, Mercy.
The Decemberists – Picaresque: We Both Go Down Together, The Mariner's Revenge Song. (Hard to countenance a selection from this album not including the latter song.)
Portishead – Portishead: All Mine, Undenied.
