I forgot this yesterday, but here is my weekly call for votes for albums that haven't got any yet. We go for the first 400 now. If you happen to talk to people who have chosen these albums, please direct them here.

999. Phil Collins – No Jacket Required
992. Daryl Hall & Johnny Oats – Private Eyes
974. American Football – American Football
956. Cat Power – Moon Pix
949. Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Ragged Glory
937. The Sonics – Here Are the Sonics!!
927. The Weeknd – Beauty Behind the Madness
921. The Velvet Underground – VU
917. George Michael – Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1
913. Aaliyah – Aaliyah
872. Fountains of Wayne – Welcome Interstate Managers
867. Whitney Houston – Whitney Houston
861. Tina Turner – Private Dancer
828. Steely Dan – Countdown to Ecstasy
811. Drake – Take Care
792. Donna Summer – Bad Girls
777. The Police – Outlandos D’Amour
776. Depeche Mode – Black Celebration
746. Journey – Escape
742. Elastica – Elastica
739. The Jacksons – Destiny
737. Tom Waits – Closing Time
731. Roxy Music – Country Life
712. Pavement – Wowee Zowee
691. Aerosmith – Rocks
681. The La’s – The La’s
643. Tindersticks – Tindersticks
617. Grimes – Visions

That Visions does not have any takers yet is the biggest surprise to me, as I thought this forum was obsessed with Grimes, or is that just Art Angels?

I already noted last time that there are a lot of big mainstream favorites up there, which is all the more notable when things like Vision Creation Newsun and D.I. Go Pop seem to amass multiple votes in no time at all.

I agree with the official picks for these two albums.

400. Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove: "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" and "One Nation Under a Groove"

395. Parliament - Mothership Connection: "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" and "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)"

417. Minutemen – Double Nickels on the Dime
Corona
I just learned this is the band's most played song on Spotify by quite some measure. Did all these streams originate this year?
A long, long time ago it was used as the Jackass theme song as far as I remember
Yes that's the most likely explanation, that's where I know the song from.

394. Bloc Party – Silent Alarm
Like Eating Glass is one of my favorite album intro ever, with the tense guitar and the kickass drum. The album is packed with hits so it's harder picking a 2nd one, but I'll go with the Cure flavored This Modern Love.

392. Talk Talk – Laughing Stock
Myrrhman - Ascension Day

389. Big Star - #1 Record
Thirteen is in my top 10 songs ever, In the Street reminds me of That 70's Show and that's pretty cool too.

388. The Pogues – Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
On the ballad front, it's a close call between A Pair of Brown Eyes and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and I kinda feel bad picking the one that's a cover. On the pub romper side, Sally MacLennane takes the cake.

378. Yo La Tengo – I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One
Autumn Sweater - Deeper Into Movies

376. PJ Harvey – Dry
Sheela-na-gig - Dress

FrankLotion wrote: Mon Nov 23, 2020 8:21 pm The Prodigy – The Fat of the Land: It’s pretty rude, but Smack My Bitch Up is still immensely fun and makes me kind of miss the high-octane rush of rave music.
I don't like being precious or drag out the term 'misogyny' to quickly when it comes to music or art and general, but the few lines (there are only two, but repeated) of this song just strike me as completely gratuitously mean, to the point it distracts so much that it ruins any fun to be had. The group's defense, that "Smack my bitch up" just means "doing something intensely" is also really poor and misguided. The image of masses of raving people on drugs, partying to such lyrics as if it was a spiritual mantra is also very nasty. I'm too young to have been part of the rave culture of the nineties, but I don't think I would have fit in.
This is not anything against you, by the way. It's fine if you like the song, but it is the only one on the playlist now that I will personally skip no matter what.
No offense taken! I agree with all of that, I guess for me it's part of a larger discussion (which has been had numerous times on the forum already) about whether someone is okay with listening to an artist that is problematic or worse in favor of appreciating the music in general. I think it's completely justified to take a hardline for some songs or artists and It's definitely something that I still reckon with from time to time (i.e. NWA, Brand New, etc.).

I fell off in posting for this thread, but I might as well throw my hat in for this one:

712. Pavement – Wowee Zowee
"Father to a Sister of Thought" is my favorite off the album - when that pedal steel comes in, I'm in heaven. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't get "Rattled by the Rush" stuck in my head every other week.

Madonna – Madonna: I already talked about Madonna a bit when we were voting on Ray of Light so I’ll keep this one short. Borderline is a very close third but I tend to put on Lucky Star and Holiday more often.

A Tribe Called Quest: Another one where I have to align with the popular picks, Award Tour is a well-earned victory lap and Q-Tip’s production is typically smooth but he also manages to stick in a bunch of clever samples here and there. Speaking of which, I can’t think of a hip-hop track that has been as heavily-sampled as the lush Electric Relaxation, I’m still hearing those guitars popping up in new songs today.

Go-Go’s – Beauty and the Beat: Yup, again the hits are fantastic so my votes have to go to Our Lips are Sealed and We Got the Beat.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Damn the Torpedoes: I met Tom Petty once! I was only around 11 so I don’t remember it much but he was passing through northern AZ on his way to Phoenix and he stopped at a bagel shop where we were eating; he seemed like a nice guy. Anyways, Here Comes My Girl and Don’t Do Me Like That get my votes.

The Millennium – Begin: Another great discovery through the MAA tournament. I might be alone in this but when I first put Prelude on I hadn’t looked at the release date of the album and honestly when those drums kicked in I thought I was listening to some late 2000’s baroque pop band, I think maybe it was because the drumming sounded so clear in the mix and kind of like a hip-hop beat but who knows. Either way, To Claudia on Thursday definitely sounds of its time but that’s not a problem, it has such wonderful harmonies and that bass line is killer.

James Brown – Sex Machine: This version of Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine very generously provides over 10 minutes of funky goodness and for me the version of It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World on this album is the definitive one.

The Streets – A Grand Don’t Come for Free: Skinner’s intro to his amusing odyssey, It Was Supposed to Be So Easy suitably has the proper fanfare in the horns but he still keeps the narrative grounded and quite relatable with his steady series of disasters, I feel like I’ve had a few of those days. His delivery takes a pretty liberal approach to matching his vocals with the beat but I count that as a plus because it just gives Skinner more room to load up tracks like Fit But You Know It with mundane details and clever wordplay.

Bob Dylan – John Wesley Harding: I hadn’t actually listened to much of Dylan’s discography until a few years ago so I was a bit surprised when I put this on and got blues and country rock where I expected more Blonde on Blonde. Not that I’m complaining, he clearly wears that country hat quite well throughout his discography. As I Went out One Morning and The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest aren’t too groundbreaking but are both great listens nonetheless and get my votes.

One Nation Under a Groove
Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock

375. Novos Baianos - Acabou chorare
Preta Pretinha
Tinino Trincando

Latin music rarely knows to grab me for some reason, but somehow this one did, a lot. I listened to it again today and there is so much to chose from. The vocals from Moreas Moreiro and the rhythm on Preta Pretinha are just gorgeous, while Tinino Trincando's rock guitar sound supported by the wonderful voice of Baby Consuelo are just cool as heck.

371. Little Richard – Here’s Little Richard
Tutti Frutti
Slippin’ and Slidin’ (Peepin’ and Hidin’)

A lot of these fifties rock 'n roll albums are bogged down by filler, but not this one! This just rocks on without a pause. The loudest song and the one with the best melody are my choice.

366. Kate Bush – The Dreaming
Suspended in Gaffa
Night of the Swallow

This album seems to get more appreciated everywhere and I'm happy for it as it combines the appealing precociousness of early Kate Bush with her more mature work that would soon follow. Which songs to chose? The choice for songs is difficult, but these two immediately spring into mind when thinking of the album.

364. The Beach Boys – Surf’s Up
Surf’s Up
Long Promised Road

A very other side of The Beach Boys, even if you know The Smile Sessions, where the title track originated. This album contains the definitive version though and Long Promised Road also adds to the more wistful mood of the album.

354. Neil Young – Tonight’s the Night
Tonight’s the Night
Borrowed Tune

Such a sad album, so here are two great tearjerkers. The title track is a heart-felt ode to a roadie and Borrowed Tune a wrenching reflection of a mind so fried by sadness that it can't come up with a new tune anymore.

370. Brian Eno – Before and After Science
By This River - Here he Comes

362. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus
Might be my 3/4 time signature bias again, but Cannibal's Hymn is by far and large my favorite Nick Cave song.
The 2nd pick is much harder as the album has a double dose of great tracks, but I'll go with Supernaturally.

360. Run the Jewels – Run the Jewels 2
Early is probably thematically the most interesting of the album, but I'd be kidding if I said I don't go to RTJ2 first and foremost for the bangers, and the Oh My Darling Don't Cry, Blockbuster Night pt1, Close Your Eyes sequence bangs motherfreaking hard. If you remove the Zack de la Rocha verse, the first 2 are clear winners, but he delivered an all time great verse in there so it's a close call in the end.

471. Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Lisztomania is obvious ok but I never understand why 1901 is so loved, I heard that the song was in a commercial in the United States, I think that's where it comes from. I prefer Fences for example, or Lasso, or Armistice.

470. Blur – Blur An album full of hit where all the songs can be here. I adore Death of A party and Strange News from Another Star sooooooo Bowiesque!

455. Cream – Disraeli Gears Sunshine of Your Love and World Of Pain

350. Sleater-Kinney – Dig Me Out
Words and Guitar
Dance Song ’97

The title track is the classic, but is actually not among my favorites. Give me this tribute to rock music on Words and Guitar and ehm, what was not particularly dance music in 1997 (but should have been).

341. Pink Floyd – Meddle
One of These Days
Echoes

On this album I feel that the post-Barrett sound was first fully achieved. How better to announce the culmination of this new sound than with the atmospheric opener One of These Days. Echoes of course is the album's most memorable song and perhaps music's ultimate communication with the extra-terrestrial.

330. Sleater-Kinney – One Beat
One Beat
Combat Rock

The off-beat One Beat is perhaps my favorite Sleater-Kinney song, with it's odd martial feel, defiant take on existentialism and memorable lyrics. Combat Rock does the same for politics. Kind of surprised but happy to see this outrank Dig Me Out.

350. Sleater-Kinney – Dig Me Out
That's tough, while One Beat and The Woods have clear stand outs imo, this one is much more (fantastically) even from start to finish. The personal drama of One More Hour is still amazing, not since Rumours had a band user relationships from within the band to such effect, and it might be the best example of how Corin and Carrie can use their voices as 2 antagonistic forces.
2nd pick goes to Turn It On, a nice rocker with a great build up.

347. Stereolab – Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Metronomic Underground - Spark Plug

342. Brian Eno – Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
Third Uncle (favorite Eno song) - Put a Straw Under Baby

I realized I haven't voted for Homework which is a big omission on my part !

335. Kraftwerk – Computerwelt
I like the Pitchfork 500 approach to take Numbers and Computer World 2 as a single song but that'd be cheating I guess (even if that would still make a shorter song than Computer Love. Honestly, any song would work for me, but I find Pocket Calculator somehow hilarious on top of plain awesome.

332. Brian Eno – Here Come the Warm Jets
Baby’s On Fire - Needles in the Camel’s Eye
2 tracks that prove Eno could have just done great rock songs if he wasn't made for exploring new horizons.

331. Built to Spill – Perfect from Now On
Is the album available on Spotify in the US ?
FAVORITE - ALBUM - EVER ! Velvet Waltz is pretty much tied as my favorite song of all time so that's a no brainer. Randy Described Eternity might be the theme defining song of the album, but I feel there's no better pick than I Would Hurt a Fly to drag the listener in.

330. Sleater-Kinney – One Beat
Corin Tucker is one of my favorite vocalists ever, and Sympathy is her defining performance, doesn't hurt that rest of the song is fantastic too. I have my personal 1-hour best of Sleater-Kinney playlist, and the other entry from One Beat is Oh! but I can't blame anyone for favoring the title song.
