Midnight updating is done.

I almost thought I voted for none of todays albums, but last minute one showed up:

301. Lorde – Melodrama
The Louvre
Homemade Dynamite

Green Light is expected to make the playlist of course, but I would put that on the bottom 3 of this album. I like it, but don't love it like most. I'd rather have these two, which find Lorde at her most witty (The Louvre) and playful (Homemade Dynamite).

I can't speak for the rest of the world but Perfect from Now on isn't Spotifyable on British shores and will thus see its highlights make their way onto my YT playlist in the next couple of days.

Os Mutantes - Bat macumba chafes against its garage rock straitjacket, breaking into bursts of proto-glitch in its guitars. Panis et circenses shows similar resistance to staying in one place, that of Sgt Pepper-ish circus theme whimsy morphing into a more dissonant beast by its ending.

MASSEDUCTION - in every facet, Slow Disco makes dumping someone feel like the most graceful thing imaginable. Pills treats addiction as a monotonous grind without boring the listener by reminding us Annie Clark hadn't in no way left her guitar behind just because the album was mainly electronic.

The Modern Dance - viewing a relationship as a diplomatic treaty meant that Pere Ubu were always going to have an original take on rock's fundaments, even prior to David Thomas yelping his way through the song in question, Non-Alignment Pact. Street Waves seems to make use of a field-recorded gust of wind and static in its oddly mellow breakdown accompanied only by loping bass. Considering its initial release in 1976, they were ripping up the post-punk rulebook before punk had even been codified.

Pornography - the album announcing itself by wailing "It doesn't matter if we all die" hinted that The Lovecats wouldn't find a home here but that opening track, One Hundred Years, testified to just how the already disintegrating band poured their struggles with touring, with drug abuse and with each other into a focused ambience of despair whilst still being boppable. No such concessions to revelry can be found on Siamese Twins, Robert Smith sometimes having only a drum machine for company. If this anticipates the drama of goth, it is a one-man-play based around rueful soliloquies.

Natty Dread - I'm particularly fond of music about dancing away the hurt, which brings me to Them Belly Full (But We Hungry). You can practically hear Marley will himself to forget his troubles and it adds bite to a simple, rhythmically tight song. AAHHHH Rebel Music! With this mixture of Marley's passionate outcry and the I-Threes' soothing sweetness, the most thrilling 20 seconds of the Wailers' recordings emerged.

Halcyon Digest - Earthquake seems to run on backwards samples as if trying frantically to recall whether and when mistakes could've been avoided. He Would Have Laughed shakes off any sense of an eulogy, detonating the tension of the album after a slow release.

'Live' at the Apollo - I've not heard any other musician who taps into an audience's energy like James Brown. He and the JBs improvised Get up offa That Thing as their comeback hit many years later out of frustration with the unresponsive attendants of a concert in Florida and on the second Apollo album, he tries everything to win over a finally ecstatic crowd. He has them in the palm of his hand from the word go on Apollo I, though, the potency of his opening rasp making it almost irrelevant what the actual song would turn out to be but the sharp horns of I'll Go Crazy if nothing else suggested the perfectionist singer had already started to fine his band for any bum notes. Lost Someone is essentially crowd-pleasing exercise over the same circular backing for 10 minutes but Brown's timing, empathy and pure vocal prowess (never forget how gifted a singer he was) leaves us with no mystery as to why we hear the kind of screams in the background you'd expect to hear on a rollercoaster instead.

Currents - Yes I'm Changing asks the listener to join Kevin Parker in his new direction with a melody that was enough to persuade me on its own. New Person, Same Old Mistakes finds him in a more understanding mode and wracked with doubt in a pleasingly humble manner.

Giant Steps - you can tell Coltrane and his band weren't hanging around on this LP, Countdown especially feels like it's cramming enough saxophone notes for a song twice its length. Giant Steps itself adeptly evolves from a md-tempo bebop into a rollicking hard-bop flurry.

Dusty in Memphis - looking beyond Son of a Preacher Man, Breakfast in Bed and Just a Little Lovin' effortlessly ooze sensuality with Springfield in a relaxed mode, reflecting what were allegedly the only recording sessions the self-critical soul queen felt proud of.

Straight outta Compton - the album's not without its faults but I don't believe its reputation should rest solely on its title track or Fuck tha Police. A more chilled side to NWA can be found with the oft-derided MC Ren gliding skillfully over the AWB-sampling lick of If It Ain't Ruff. In Gangsta Gangsta lies the roots of Dr. Dre's later G-funk productions under the more reliable bars of Ice Cube for much of the track.

Chairs Missing - it's hard to see past I Am the Fly for its direct antagonism, albeit with a more offbeat bent than Wire's contemporaries. French Film Blurred draws you in with its aura of mystery that never quite dims however much you play it.
All I got inside is vacancy!

It isn't on Spotify around here either. I had forgotten to mark it as such. Fixed that.

284. Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel…
Hot Knife
Every Single Night

The two obvious ones, or at least for this forum, where Hot Knife is rightly rated. I discovered that other forums or outlets frequently hate that song, but to me it is a career highlight. It also perhaps a precursor to Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Every Single Night is the most fun on the album and contains some of Apple's best vocals.

277. Cocteau Twins – Treasure
Donimo
Lorelei

Donimo is one of those great closing tracks that makes sure that everything builds to a big climax. Lorelei is one the band's most ethereal tracks.

The updates have been done.

I have to say that following on me noting yesterday that participation seemed low, it seems it only got worse. I know there are always less votes in the weekend, but the sheer drop today just kind of scares me. Is it a coincidence or a people dropping this project? It can't be done without participators I'm afraid.

My votes for today:

269. Sigur Rós - ( )
Untitled #3
Untitled #8

I don't use the like function on Spotify anymore, but I am glad I had the foresight to use them here, because otherwise I would not have known which to pick on base of the title. It's hard to know without listening which these are, but I trust my judgment.

268. Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison
Folsom Prison Blues
25 Minutes to Go

Folsom Prison Blues was already a masterpiece, but it is fitting that the definitive version would be recorded at the prison itself. It just gets something special from the inmates' reaction. I also love the gallows humor Cash brought to occassion, literally on 25 Minutes to Go. That one has one of his most humorous vocals.

266. Neil Young – On the Beach
Ambulance Blues
See the Sky About to Rain

One of Young's great epics and one of his most touching ballads.

253. Joanna Newsom – Ys [Not on Spotify]
Emily
Sawdust & Diamonds

Emily has some of the greatest lyrics every written. The part with the meteorites is just on another level than most writers operate. Sawdust & Diamonds likewise finds words to describe a difficult relationship that nobody else would find. Add to those her idiosyncratic singing and weird musical take and you got something though, but touching.

It can't be done without participators I'm afraid.
I’ll be contributing again soon, it’s been difficult to find much time for music this week but I can add to this bit by bit.

274. Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill
Anything but Fight for Your Right will work for me, I'll agree on Questlove on how awesome Hold It Now, Hit It, and if you are going to sample classics, you'd be hard pressed to do better than Rhymin' & Stealin'

272. Cyndi Lauper – She’s So Unusual
Girls Just Want to Have Fun - When You Were Mine

271. Iggy and the Stooges – Raw Power
Search and Destroy - Gimme Danger

270. Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine
Another case of "the most famous song is the one I like the least in the album", probably to a bigger extend than most of the time. That's one of the hardest pick in the game because that's been among my favorite albums ever since middle school, it stood of time more than most ! Know Your Enemy has been a huge favorite for as long as I can remember, but many has switched place for #2. Back in my teens, I'd had paired it with Take the Power Back, during my engineering school year probably with Wake Up whose last part we used to belt out near the closing of parties, but the one that endured the most is probably Freedom, and is there a more RATM defining lyric than "anger is a gift" ?

267. Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Zero - Tonight, Tonight

258. Slint – Spiderland
Good Morning, Captain - Washer

252. Grimes – Art Angels

I try to vote for every album on my list, that list just happened to be pretty short :(

Anyway, I've got a nice little bunch today:

My picks for Music Has the Right to Children: Bocuma & Roygbiv, in that order. It's basically a single track for me

My picks for Let It Be: I've Got A Feeling & Get Back

My picks for Spiderland: Breadcrumb Trail & Good Morning, Captain

That makes sense. As a non-American I didn't think about this. My plea seems to have helped, as participation is now relatively high for a weekend.

Although I got a good reminder of why I decided to do this whole game in short parts instead of the whole thing at once, because this took me a couple of hours.

243. The xx – xx
Intro
Islands

The 2000's poll made pay attention to Intro for the first time and it has grown out to be a favorite. Islands is the best song in the album's more general style.

239. Fiona Apple – Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Relay
Under the Table

These are probably not the two songs that will make the End of Year lists, but they are my favorites on a very consistent album. Relay is a great reflection on the nature of evil (with great rhythm), while Under the Table has the best lyrics and is all-around powerful.

234. Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell!
Mariners Apartment Complex
The Greatest

This one has some many songs that would make sense as picks! Mariners Apartment Complex is my big favorite. It has perhaps Del Rey's best lyrics ever and a wonderful tune. I will not begrudge anyone for picking Venice Bitch (or Hope is a Dangerous Thing, or Doin' Time), but I'll go with The Greatest for my second pick. Like Sad Day it has become connected to me with the early days of corona and with lockdown and it's looking back on more livelier time just connected with me deeply at the moment. And it is a wonderful tune too.

231. Leonard Cohen – Songs of Love and Hate
Famous Blue Raincoat (1)
Avalanche (1)

Famous Blue Raincoat is an obvious masterpiece. Not only does it have perhaps Cohen's best melody, but it might also be the best description of a love-hate relationship and of a love triangle ever in a song. I almost went with Dress Rehearsal Rag as the second pick, but hearing Nick Cave singing Avalanche today in the concert film Idiot Prayer once again confronted me with what a masterpiece the original is (it fits Cave too, by the way!).

228. Sleater-Kinney – The Woods
Entertain
Jumpers

You'd expect that with my #3 album of all time the choices would be very difficult, but although I love the whole album deeply, these two are the clear central tracks for me. Two great powerhouse rock song, one rough and close to insane, one melancholy and melodious. Rock music at it's peak.

246. Gorillaz – Demon Days
Wait, why is everybody skipping El Mañana, maybe Damon Albarn's loveliest song ever ? Tempting to go sideways for the 2nd pick too, with Every Planet We Reach is Dead, but I'll stay within the heavy hitters and dance to Dare.

243. The xx – xx
I'll also pick Intro though it might not be the most representative of the album, and the haunting Shelter

236. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Another favorite from my early teens, maybe my love for 3/4 time signature started here, with the gorgeous Breaking the Girl that I still hold in very high esteem. I also loved I Could Have Lied, which was sort of the soundtrack of my teen heartbreaks but it might be a bit problematic in its message, so I'll go to the funkier Suck my Kiss instead.

235. Elliott Smith – XO
Waltz #2 is my other favorite song of all time, so no hesitation here. The first half of the album is packed though, so the second pick is not as easy, but I'll be brave and chose today, not Tomorrow, Tomorrow.

231. Leonard Cohen – Songs of Love and Hate
I'm perfectly fine with Famous Blue Raincoat making the list, but for me Avalanche is Cohen's best song, rolling steadily over the listener with grace and poise, while Dress Rehearsal Rag self hatred is fascinating.

228. Sleater-Kinney – The Woods
The 5 songs stretch from What's Mine is Yours to Rollercoaster is fantastic and any of those 5 songs is fine. My first pick will be the playful Rollercoaster, love how it builds up then speeds up, then slows down before building up again, just like its namesake. 2nd pick goes to Jumpers, I mentioned how Corin and Carrie voices working together/against each other can be fantastic and that's a prime example, the riff is awesome, Janet Weiss hits all kind of greatness on her drums : that song is flawless, how it is not close to AM top 1000 is beyond me !
