All Along the Watchtower belongs to Electric Ladyland. Castle Made of Sand is right, though.

It's your call, but know that nobody will spare you with their extreme length picks.

223. Nick Drake – Bryter Layter
Northern Sky
Fly

Nick Drake albums are not so much song-based, but more based on sinking in a feeling for the duration of the album. Still, if I had to pick two I guess I would pick these two. Northern Sky works the most as a stand-alone song and Fly gets me the most.

219. Simon & Garfunkel – Bookends
A Hazy Shade of Winter
Mrs. Robinson

The album that is one of the bookends to my list. Not half as consistent as Parsley Sage, etc. and Bridge Over the Troubled Water, but these two songs succesfully show a more biting site to the duo that we don't see much.

217. Funkadelic – Maggot Brain
Maggot Brain
Hit It and Quit It

I mean, theoretically you can vote this album and not for the title track, but it won't make sense to me. Hit It and Quit It is one of the band's most underrated funk rock tunes, with a fantastic guitar.

Here another attempt to let no album go without a vote. We actually covered some ground this week, although mostly due to people playing catch-up. Usually I add 100 a week, but since we are getting nearer the end and people don't seem to get back further than 400, we'll do the bottom 600 this time around.

999. Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
992. Daryl Hall & Johnny Oats – Private Eyes
974. American Football – American Football
956. Cat Power – Moon Pix
949. Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Ragged Glory
937. The Sonics – Here Are the Sonics!!
927. The Weeknd – Beauty Behind the Madness
921. The Velvet Underground – VU
917. George Michael – Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1
913. Aaliyah – Aaliyah
872. Fountains of Wayne – Welcome Interstate Managers
867. Whitney Houston – Whitney Houston
861. Tina Turner – Private Dancer
828. Steely Dan – Countdown to Ecstasy
811. Drake – Take Care
792. Donna Summer – Bad Girls
776. Depeche Mode – Black Celebration
746. Journey – Escape
739. The Jacksons – Destiny
731. Roxy Music – Country Life
727. Paul Simon – Paul Simon
681. The La’s – The La’s
542. Jorge Ben - África Brasil
531. ABBA – Arrival
530. Nirvana – Bleach
529. Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Uhm
521. Various Artists – The Harder They Come
519. Pharaoh Sanders – Karma [Alright, this only has two songs, but that didn't stop similar albums from getting love!]
510. Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms
504. The Doors – Strange Days
502. Michael Jackson – Dangerous
490. J Dilla – Donuts
484. George Michael – Faith
473. Dr. Dre – The Chronic
446. D’Angelo – Black Messiah
444. The Streets – Original Pirate Material
441. R.E.M. – Green
438. Sonic Youth – Sister

Anybody any idea how we could get bonnielaurel in here? That might really help. Brad too perhaps.

The thing that upsets me is Phil Collins. In that little thumbnail of the playlist he is always watching me and his head look so red, as if he is angry. Maybe we can someone to give him some love, so he calms down?

Really weird that there is only one album without votes left for the whole 600's, but that the top of the 500's are so crowded, after a gap of 139 albums.

Bob Dylan – Nashville Skyline: With all due respect to the original, this version of Girl From the North Country just seems to hit harder for me, probably because Johnny Cash just fits like a glove on this track. I Threw it All Away is magical and I wish it wasn’t so damn short.

Depeche Mode – Music for the Masses: I had mostly been a Depeche Mode agnostic in that I appreciated and liked a couple of their albums but never delved too deeply into them. Hearing Never Let Me Down Again earlier this year broke that door down real fast, and it’s one of my most played songs of the year so far. Strangelove is a close second.

The Chemical Brothers – Dig Your Own Hole: Block Rockin’ Beats is one of those songs that I would hear EVERYWHERE in the late 90’s but that’s probably because it’s true to its name and is an exhilarating experience in and of itself. The Private Psychedelic Reel is no less dynamic and really does sound psychedelic, to me it sounds like a more booming and chaotic update of Tomorrow Never Knows.

Ornette Coleman – The Shape of Jazz to Come: It had to have been a pretty good album to steal some attention away from Kind of Blue. Just from the skittering and foreboding intro of Lonely Woman is intense enough, but that iconic sax melody sounds like someone screaming or wailing in a way you can’t ignore it and I literally can’t whenever I put this on. Eventually is probably what Coleman was imagining as the “shape of jazz to come” and it succeeds where I feel most free-jazz falls apart in that there’s still a coherent progression you can follow to keep it from going off the rails.

218. Can – Tago Mago
Halleluhwah - Paperhouse

216. TV on the Radio – Dear Science
That one feels tough because I will have to leave out one of my old favorite, but DLZ has been a massive grower recently, angry TV on the Radio is usually great and that might be the best example (whether or not it is about Walter White). The other pick would be between the underrated Love Dogs or the bouncy Halfway Home

212. Metallica – Master of Puppets
Master of Puppets - Battery

211. Primal Scream – Screamadelica
Loaded, Movin' On Up

210. OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
Ideally there should be one track from each side, though I guess The Love Below will get both.
The Love Below is hits and misses, but the hits are great. Besides the obvious Hey Ya, I can't get enough of Happy Valentine's Day, Dracula's Wedding, She Lives in my Laps and especially Roses whose inclusion in the playlist would at least ensure we get some Big Boi in there. Speakerboxxx is the superior side though, only hits : the 2nd half of War kicks ass, Knowing is slick, The Rooster's horn are awesome and Big Boi delivers all time great verses, but I'll go for Flip Flop Rock, the music is crazy, it helped put the spotlight on Killer Mike and I tend to think Jay-Z is at his best when he guests.

207. Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is one of the very best showcase for one of the greatest vocalists ever ; close call for 2nd pick but Your Time is Gonna Come is pretty fun.

205. Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf
bla bla bla 3/4 time signature bla bla A Song for the Deaf (also, best intro ever). Someone mentioned recently songs that stopped halfway, and A Song for the Dead is one of my favorite example, it's also one more prove that QOTSA is at its very best with Mark Lanegan's voice and that Dave Grohl is an all time great... and this never failed to lead to massive pogos everytime I saw them live.

201. Gang of Four – Entertainment!
Damaged Goods - Ether

195. Lou Reed – Berlin
Sad Song
Caroline Says II

One of those album that should be listened to in full and not on a song basis, but that's now how this playlist works, so here are my two picks. Sad Song is a great coda and probably the most stand-alone song (but still not really). The second time Caroline Says something is the best time.

190. Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Rust Never Sleeps
Powderfinger
Hey Hey My My (Into the Black)

Neil Young might have become my favorite guitar player and these two are the best showcases why. Some prefer the acoustic version of Hey Hey My My, but give me the crunching darkness and grittiness of the electric version any day.

177. Green Day – American Idiot
Jesus of Suburbia
American Idiot

Today Bohemian Rhapsody showed up on our playlist, but it is time for us to face facts and accept that the ultimate rock opera song is Jesus of Suburbia. American Idiot on the other hand is the best straightforward punk song the band ever did.

I love it too, but it's my 2nd-favorite 9-minute-long epic on the album!

199. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
Flume - For Emma

196. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillion
In the Flowers - Brother Sport

194. Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
I'm part of the 2 person team on AM convinced that Fillmore Jive is one of the greatest song of all time, but Range Life is a great ballad too.

193. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP
Drug Ballad - Criminal

191. The Knife – Silent Shout
Flawless album, picking with the bouncing beats of the title song Silent Shout. Depending on the mood, I'd rather go to the haunted Forest Families or go dance to Like a Pen.

187. Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Teardrop - Angel

182. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
My opinion on Arcade Fire is highly influenced by their live shows, so Keep the Car Running is a given. Would have voted for No Cars Go 10 years ago, but Intervention stood the test of time better.

179. Portishead – Third
The Rip - Silence

225. Sly & the Family Stone – There’s a Riot Goin’ On
Family Affair
If You Want Me to Stay

218. Can – Tago Mago
Halleluhwah
Oh Yeah

217. Funkadelic – Maggot Brain
Can You Get To That
Maggot Brain

216. TV on the Radio – Dear Science
DLZ
Halfway Home

These two tracks are much better than the two suggested ones. I'm surprised DLZ hasn't received more of an acclaim boost from its usage at a crucial moment of Breaking Bad (not to mention the fact that it's an astonishing track)

214. The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat
I Heard Her Call My Name
White Light/White Heat

I'll spare the playlist from Sister Ray; I Heard Her Call My Name covers much of the territory in a shorter time anyway.

213. Massive Attack – Blue Lines
Unfinished Sympathy
Safe from Harm

212. Metallica – Master of Puppets
Master of Puppets
Orion

211. Primal Scream – Screamadelica
Movin' on Up
Loaded

208. Soundgarden – Superunknown
The Day I Tried to Live
Spoonman

205. Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf
Go With the Flow
Mosquito Song

201. Gang of Four – Entertainment!
Natural's Not in It
Damaged Goods

194. Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Range Life
Gold Soundz

187. Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Angel
Teardrop

186. Talking Heads – Fear of Music
Cities
Life During Wartime

185. The Jesus and Mary Chain – Psychocandy
Just Like Honey
The Living End (honestly, even though I love this album, a lot of the songs after JLH blend together for me)

181. Air – Moon Safari
La Femme d'Argent
Ce Matin La

The vocal tracks get more acclaim, but the appeal of the album lies more to me in these two beautiful instrumentals.

180. Mercury Rev – Deserter’s Songs
Holes
Goddess on a Hiway

179. Portishead – Third
The Rip
Machine Gun

Dizzee Rascal – Boy in Da Corner: I could pick any two songs off this one, not only is it one of the best hip-hop albums but even if you strip away the vocals it would be one the greatest electronic album too (self-produced at age 18!!). Sittin’ Here is a great peek into his head and Fix Up, Look Sharp quite literally doesn’t sound like any other hit single but does wonders with just the spare but booming Billy Squeir drums and his vocals (kind of reminds me of When Doves Cry now that I’m thinking about it).

Tom Waits – Bone Machine: Speaking of spare, Bone Machine is especially stripped back and is kooky even by Tom Waits’ standards. The Earth Died Screaming might as well be the theme song of the album and captures the mood of the album art perfectly (and vice versa). There’s probably more interesting tracks but I love the straight blues of Jesus Gonna Be Here and its steady upright bass. I heard that Keith Richards is somewhere on this album too but I’ve never stopped to look it up.

The Wailers – Burnin’: The singing and melodies here are so so good. If we were including bonus tracks I’d go for Reincarnated Soul but I’ll settle for the two incredible singles Get Up, Stand Up and I shot the Sheriff.

Tom Waits – Bad as Me: Being one of his best within a whole catalog of great material, it perplexes that Bad as Me has been completely forgotten in most of the decade retrospectives in the nine years since. Oh well. Chicago sounds like the introduction of a movie (written and performed solely by Tom Waits, of course) and gives the album a nice thrust right from the get-go, and my other vote goes to the cathartic exasperated yelping of the Title Track.

225. Sly & the Family Stone – There’s a Riot Goin’ On Family Affair and Luv N' Haight

222. Stevie Wonder – Talking Book Superstition is my first choice by a large margin, this song is so incredible. and Maybe Your Baby

220. David Bowie – Aladdin Sane Aladdin Sane and Lady Grinning Soul Mike Garson is magnificient in these songs.

218. Can – Tago Mago Paperhouse and Oh Yeah!

217. Funkadelic – Maggot Brain Can You Get To That and Hit It And Quit It

214. The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat Lady Godiva's Operation and White Light/White Heat

209. Serge Gainsbourg – Histoire de Melody Nelson L'Hôtel Particulier and Cargo Culte but all the songs deserve to be here.

205. Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf No One Knows and The Sky Is Fallin'

199. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago Flume and Lump Sum

197. Pavement – Slanted and Enchanted In The Mouth A Desert and Here

195. Lou Reed – Berlin It's one of those three or four albums that I can listen to 10 or 15 times in a row. I love every second of this human drama. It's very difficult to get a single song out of it. I choose Sad Song and Men of Good Fortune.
P.S. : and I have to say that, for a bad english speaker like me, Lou Reed is a joy to listen to because his diction is so clear and you can understand all the words effortlessly. I think it is the English speaker that I understand most easily in his songs.

193. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP Stan and The Real Slim Shady OK

191. The Knife – Silent Shout Silent Shout and Marble House

188. Otis Redding – Otis Blue/ Otis Redding Sings Soul Respect and I've Been Loving You Too Long (to Stop Now) this album is so full of covers.

Beefheart's made his presence felt on the YT playlist https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLn ... jHukfj_Ecg

There's a Riot Goin' on: Time & Space Cowboy
Entertainment!: I Found That Essence Rare & At Home He's a Tourist
Out of Time: Texarkana & Half a World away
Silent Shout: Forest Families & Marble House
Rust Never Sleeps: Sedan Delivery & Welfare Mothers
69 Love Songs: I Don't Want to Get over You & How Fucking Romantic

American Idiot: Jesus of Suburbia is a given but upon searching for Give Me Novocaine this week for revising my AT songs list for next year, I discovered most of the album is now formatted as a set of twin tracks, even when the chosen pairings don't necessarily fit (She's a Rebel would make more sense being grouped with Extraordinary Girl, thematically at least, for example). After much deliberation between it and the succeeding Spotify entry, I'll endorse Give Me Novocaine/She's a Rebel for a preview of the album's soft and hard sides.
All I got inside is vacancy!

174. Beach House – Teen Dream
Used to Be
Zebra

I'm continuing my personal trend of voting for a Beach House song everyone ignores. Did you know Used to Be has some of the best melodies ever, but also is one of the few Beach House tracks were I care about the lyrics. Zebra is my conventional contribution to the playlist.

171. The National – Boxer
Mistaken for Strangers
Fake Empire

Mistaken for Strangers, just the title is enough to make me interested and to me it remains the purest statement of what the band is about, both in lyrics and in music. There are a lot of tracks I considered for pick two, but the trumpets at the end of Fake Empire were the deciding factor, even if other songs have better lyrics.

164. Wire – Pink Flag
Ex Lion Tamer
Three Girl Rhumba

The fun of the album is more in rattling off all these short songs, then listening to them as standalone items, but these two were my introduction for the band and they worked to make me try out the album, so perhaps the same goes for you?

158. Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left
River Man
Saturday Sun

Like Bryter Layter this is mostly a mood piece to me, but these two actually work pretty well on their own. River Man is perhaps the most complete song of his career.

I would love for Harvest Moon to be part of the playlist, but it is from the sequel. I guess you mean just Harvest?
Ah whoops, yes, just Harvest.

Thanks for pointing that out. It may have been tacked on as a bonus track to the version of the album I have. I'll go Luv N' Haight as my second track.

170. The Avalanches – Since I Left You
Frontier Psychiatrist
Since I Left You

A good example of an album where there are two very obvious tracks for the playlist. These are the only ones that really make sense to listen to out of the context of the album since the rest of it flows so well.

169. Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
Kashmir
Ten Years Gone

167. Kraftwerk – Die Mensch-Machine/ The Man Machine
Das Modell/ The Model
Spacelab

164. Wire – Pink Flag
Mannequin
Ex Lion Tamer

162. Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
I Think I'm in Love

The title track is still my #1 all time. I Think I'm in Love rises in the ranks every time I listen to it; it's like a peak Pink Floyd track for the late 90s.

161. The Replacements – Let It Be
I Will Dare
Androgynous

158. Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left
Day is Done
River Man

157. Elliot Smith – Either/Or
Say Yes
Ballad of Big Nothing

153. PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
The Words That Maketh Murder
The Glorious Land

151. Ramones – Ramones
Judy is a Punk
Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World

Blitzkrieg Bop is the obvious choice, but everyone's already heard enough of that one. These two tracks are just as good but less appreciated.
