The synths border on the tacky and the background singers are pure cheese, but somehow this all works. There is something in the bemused way Leonard Cohen delivers these lines of subtle sarcasm and half-threats that never fails to work for me.
A mainly formidable week, including what I think is my highest score this year for a song I haven't previously heard:
The Heartbeats - A Thousand Miles away 3
Flint Tillsammans - Staden 6
LiLiPUT - Die Matrosen 8.5 So taken by this I'm currently listening to their self-titled, which is just as dazzling so far! Billy Wallace - Burning the Wind9
The Doors - You Make Me Real 6
Leonard Cohen - First We Take Manhattan 7
Kendrick Lamar, featuring Ab-Soul – Ab-Soul’s Outro: 7
Very good early Lamar, even if like the title says it is Ab-Soul's song for a long while. Both rappers are good though and I love the jazz solo at the end.
673. The Heartbeats – A Thousand Miles Away 4.5 674. Fint Tillsammans - Staden 7.5 675. LiLiPUT – Die Matrosen 7 676. Billy Wallace – Burning the Wind 3 677. The Doors – You Make Me Real 7 678. Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan 5.5 679. Kendrick Lamar, featuring Ab-Soul – Ab-Soul’s Outro 6
The song today was originally made for the movie Singles, but that version is not on Spotify. A shorter single cut is. That one is on the playlist for now. If fasbjd does not agree, let me know. It bubbles under on AM.
Smashing Pumpkins - Down: 6
It's a fine song, but this band has done much better.
Elvis Costello – Lip Service: 7
Everything on this album is worth a listen. There are better choruses on there, but this a case were I prefer the verses anyway.
679. Kendrick Lamar, featuring Ab-Soul – Ab-Soul’s Outro: 6.5
680. The Smashing Pumpkins - Drown: 6.5
681. Elvis Costello – Lip Service: 10 (now #72 on my AT list) - "Don't act like you're above me, just look at your shoes"... Probably my favorite bassline from one of the best (Bruce Thomas), this song kicks ass - epitomizes the early Costello sneering vocals. Moves my blood.

Hymie I’m really curious, have you ever rated someone else’s song a 9/10? No judgement you’re allowed to like what you like but have you ever come across someone else’s Biggest Fan song and liked it as much as the ones on your own list?

He gave a 9 to Sound of the Crowd by The Human League. There is a rare 7 or 8 too, but over 600 of his votes are 5 or lower. He has a very clear taste in music that doesn't overlap much with most of us, especially when we go beyond the 1960's and especially the 1970's.

I don't think so, but Rob could tell you I suppose. I think I've had a couple of eights. There are a few hundred songs that are nines but that did not make my top 1,000, so it's certainly possible. What's virtually impossible though would be for a song in this contest that I never heard before to get a 9 or a 10 right away upon first listen. That has happened to me many times in my life, but given that the vast majority of songs in this tournament are from the past 40 years I would be shocked if it ever happened. My favorite stuff generally runs from the late 1940s through the early 1970s.
I'd certainly love to discover a 9 or a 10 that I don't already know.
