2021 AMF Tournament of Champions: Rules Thread

Post by Holden »

Alright, so this is an idea I had for a game that I've been thinking over for a while, wanting to wait until the end of the All-Time Album Poll to begin. Basically, this game will pit forumers against each other, something that is pretty rare on this site! However, it will also have a focus on discovering new music, so that's fun!

How it will work:

Everyone who wishes to participate will private message me a list of 10 songs and 1 album. All must be unranked on AM, so no bubbling under songs. If you wish to submit 2018-2020 songs/albums, that's fine, but just use your best judgement and don't select acclaimed songs.

I will collect songs and albums until December 31st. Then, on January 1st begins the tournament!

There will be ten (one for each song) rounds with ten different formats taking place throughout the year (sort of like my Top 200 songs of the Decade Tournament) and these rounds will give the participating songs points, which will then be applied to each participant, giving them a running total. The highest points at the end of the game wins!

Here are the formats for each round
Round 1: Single Elimination Tournament
Rules: All songs will be placed into a single elimination tournament and points will be allocated based on their placement.
Round 2: Simple Poll Creation
Rules: I will evenly divide the songs amongst several sets of simple polls using the in-forum application, and points will be allocated based on popularity.
Round 3: Grouped Ranking
Rules: I will evenly divide songs into several groups, which must then be ranked within themselves, points given based on average rank.
Round 4: Voting-Survivor
Rules: You will vote for your least favorite songs instead of favorites until we are down to a favorite, using the in-forum poll application.
Round 5: Biggest Fan
Rules: You will rate each song given to you on a scale of 1-10.
Round 6: Random Match-ups
Rules: Each song will be randomly matched-up against another song each round, and you must choose your favorite. No eliminations, just points given based on number of victories.
Round 7: Time Period-Based
Rules: Songs will be divided into subsets by release date and ranked within those subsets.
Round 8: Post-Based
Rules: Songs will be divided into subsets by the post count of the nominators and ranked within those subsets.
Round 9: Pick-Your-Favorite
Rules: Out of lists of evenly divided songs, you must chose your favorite half of those lists.
Round 10: Large List
Rules: Every song from that round will be ranked by every participant in one list, and will be ranked using Instant-Runoff Voting.

Alright, that seems like a lot, but every round I will give you the instructions again, and I think it will be pretty easy to follow in practice. What you need to know now: if you want to participate and possibly be crowned AMF's 2021 Champion, then submit to me a list of 10 songs and 1 album, all unranked on AM (no bubbling under). They will then randomly be put into the rounds and compared to other songs when their round comes!

But why the album? Well, each of these rounds is going to take more than one week, so every week I will give you an album along with that weeks main events with the songs, and you will rate it out of 10 if you listen to it, and how highly your album gets rated will add to your point total!

Also, even if you don't submit a list yourself, you can still participate in all of the listening challenges!

Additionally, there's an upcoming update to the site that will likely occur before the collection of songs/albums ends, but don't worry about checking all of the spare spreadsheets to see what will or won't be added, I'm not too worried about that. If you submit your list before the update and some elements from it are added to the database, that's fine! No need to change it.

Just check whatever version of the site is up when you submit your lists, while keeping 2018-2020 in mind and trying not to pick any songs that should be acclaimed from those most recent years!

Alright, any questions ask below, and send me your lists before December 31st!

Can a song be included if it's unranked but featured on a ranked album?

Or, by the same token, can an album with an AM-listed song be nominated?

I love the idea!

According to Henrik, These songs are going to be added in the upcoming update. The songs are from 2019,2018 and some songs from 2010-2017, So avoid adding them to your lists.

If you really gotta add a song from 2020 just use your best judgment.

That’s alright! The idea is that people who don’t submit lists will also listen to songs, so it should compensate

Could a song or an album be bubbling be missing from the site? If you go to an artist and look at all the songs for example, you'll see the songs bubbling outside the top 10,000, is that enough or do you have to go in and look in different spreadsheets?

If it’s not on an Artists page, it’s not on the site. Also there is a master list of songs and albums by title on the site on the header of any page.

I don't know about anyone else but the first half of our 60s polls next year will see me coming up short, so any albums from the early sixties nominated for this tournament would be godsends (that's what I had in mind for my own suggested album)

My list is sent. Randomizer picked ten years between 1950 and 2020, and I always selected my favorite unnaclaimed song from that year. Sometimes it's flabbergasting how an indisputable classic in my mind is still unacclaimed. My album is also inexplicably unacclaimed.

Holden, what are you aiming for here? Is the main purpose that you envision here:
- to get to know music that we didn't know before (so pretty much in line with many other games)
or
- to be competitive (so... pretty much unlike other games)

This could influence how people pick their songs. If you're being competitive, an unranked song from "Pet Sounds" that everybody already knows and likes (let's say "Here Today") may be a good choice but if the main goal here is to know new music, then it may be a d*ck move to pick a song everyone already knows from the #1 AM album, and you should instead go with some less well known pick, say "Egyptian Shumba" by the Tammys, or even some more obscure one like Sonic Youth b-side "Genetic".

I’d like to say a combination of both, but I think that the competitive aspect is more interesting to me as it hasn’t been done before. I think a lot of others have thought that as well, as we have gotten many songs that aren’t on AM but are from acclaimed albums. If anyone wants to change their picks up before the deadline let me know, but at it’s core this is going to be a competition, with hopefully some discovery as well. I’d also say I definitely don’t think anyone has gone full on just picking songs from the top ten albums or anything, but I also don’t know if that’d really matter in a group who’s choices are as diverse as this group.

I can speak for myself but I just took the first ten songs I had in my list of unranked AM songs that I had put aside.
I didn't look for competition at all.
I was more into the idea of discovery with a little bit of competition. :D

If you prefer that though, I can redo my list if Holden doesn't mind? I will only keep three or four songs in the ones I proposed at the beginning.

Each song will participate in one of the ten rounds, randomly chosen. No song will “advance” out of any round, it will be a running score for the person who submits them.

Each song will participate in one of the ten rounds, randomly chosen. No song will “advance” out of any round, it will be a running score for the person who submits them.
