Tempest by Bob Dylan

Even though it's not quite at the same level as Love and Theft and Modern Times, it's still a lot better than most of the stuff he has put out after Blood on the Tracks.

I think the album closer 'Roll on John' is the best song, maybe partly because of its subject matter, but the melody and other things are good too.

8.5 BEST NEW MUSIC (Even though Pitchfork actually gave it 6.8)

Speaking of PJ Harvey I got Dry remastered, Psychocandys Anniversay edition, Stone Roses Anniversary edition, Psychocandy Remastered, Surfer Rosa Remastered, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got Anniversary edition, Thrills, Pills and Bellyaches Remastered, MBVs Loveless Remastered,

Replacement's Timmy Remastered, Screamadelica Anniversary Edition and Suede's debut anniversary edition. Some were really hard to find.

Just bought my first new turntable in 35 years (an MMF 2.2). To celebrate I got a limited edition "Pirates" by Rickie Lee Jones, and two albums I've only ever heard digitally, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and a local band, Rah Rah's "The Poet's Dead" which the store owner threw in for free. Looking forward to rebuilding my vinyl collection; anybody got some tips?

Great! I do not have many suggestions, almost all my vinyls are older than me. I have not used my turntable in a while, either. One of the speakers does not work anymore, and the needle is very worn... I have no idea where to get a new one. (Well, to be honest I have not searched much, either.) Maybe I should follow your lead and start to retake the hobby.

Today I picked up the White Stripe's Elephant, Nina Simone's Here Comes the Sun and The War On Drugs' Lost In the Dream, which deserves its place at #1 on the MCCh! What I've learned so far...with so much music today recorded digitally, it's important to know where the masters for your vinyl are coming from... so far I've made some good choices on stuff I'd only heard as digital files. Hold on to your classic vinyl, I really regret losing track of most of mine. My ex-wife is bringing me two boxes of vinyl she had in storage for years soon; I hope there will be some treasures there.

Two great scores today; a used but mint 1973 original pressing (PC 32432) of Springsteen's The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, and an unopened 1998 pressing (V6 5008) of The Velvet Underground and Nico. Both for $15.00 at a flea market. Oh, also an original pressing of The Cars self-titled debut. Also for $15.00.

The irony of course is I bought all three of these albums in the 70's for about five bucks.

Question guys: How much of your record collecting is vinyl, and how much is CD? For a while it was about 60% CD and 40% vinyl. I would buy CD's more often simply because it was cheaper and I could buy more. However, I've been trying to buy mostly vinyl as of late, and settling with less quantity.

Didn't do it for me at all:( i don't mind artsier progressive songwriters but come on, give me some memorable melodies, a catchy chorus, something hooky. At least try. Up until this last album i never got into St. Vincent at all but i could tell she was at least trying to through together something to keep her music singalong friendly. She was a little too scattered and threw things that were weird but not particularly melodically crafted. But she remained upbeat and showed potential which great singles. Others like Newsom and Laura Marling, just too slow with intellectual instrumentation that sounds ok until they attempt to actually sing but not at all geared to a pop loving audience.

5% vinyl vs 95% cd, mainly because cds are more available, last longer and take less space. Vinyl looks nicer though.
Recently I tend to buy almost as much vinyl as cds though.

The question is though, do they want to gear up to a pop loving audience and should they? I've got nothing against pop, but I wouldn't really put Newsom and Marling in that category. I don't think it's what they are going for. Of course it can not be your taste, but critisizing them for not making concessions to pop fans is a bit like complaining about punk musicians not making easy listening. Newsom and Marling have a different audience (me included).

Haha funny cause Never Talking to You Again is my favorite Husker Du song who are of course geared toward their punk rock audience. I mean their songs arent structured with melodies, hooks, catchy choruses, which doesn't necessarily mean its pop oriented but their songs just dont capture these qualities. This Mortal Coil was far from pop although many of the artists they covered were but they would strip down these songs and interpret them into more gothic, ambient folk yet they still kept their songs in tune with lush production and accessible structure especially because of the singers they chose to interpret these classics. Thats what i notice is lacking in certain artists today but i guess every era needs their own Yoko Ono to divide peoples opinion on what might be considered art to some and trash to others.

I went to Record Store Day in hopes of finding that 5 LP LCD Soundsystem live box set. Sadly I didn't, but I walked away with a copy of "White Light/White Heat", so it wasn't a total loss.
