Spotify's most streamed albums of the 60's, 70's, and 80's

Post by baraka92 »

Hi guys! Just for fun I went deep on chartmasters.com and tried my best to make these lists since I haven't seen anything similar before.

A few observations:
- Only albums with +500m streams
- No compilations (Although, i guess you can argue that 2 albums in here are compilations).
- I added different versions of songs if they kept the same arrangement. Things like mono-stereo versions that have different numbers.
- Just the original releases. No single edits, no bonus tracks, no live performances, no alternate takes.
- Of course I could have missed a few albums. I tried my best. This was just for fun.

From the top of my head, A Hard Day's Night, Bookends, Led Zeppelin I, Cosmo's Factory, Moondance, L.A. Woman, Imagine, Transformer, Sheer Heart Attack, Toys in the Attic, High Voltage, Songs in the Key of Life, Outlandos d'Amour, Breakfast in America, London Calling, The Number of the Beast, The Queen is Dead, Kick, And Justice for All and Dr. Feelgood are among the albums with +400m streams.

Takeaways:

Not surprisingly, almost the entire discography of The Beatles is above 500m. Side note: Their non-album singles, alone, are above 1b streams.

Barely any female representation. On another side note. What's up with Madonna's awful numbers on Spotify. She's currently out of the top 250. Considering her legacy and commercial success, she should be on the level of Elton John, Led Zeppelin or U2, but she's far behind the three of them. What happened? Soon, she'll be outpaced by Whitney too.

Albums that aren't well remembered like United, Voices, Make It Big, Hot Space, Eye of the Tiger and Sweet Dreams are carried by just one massive song. One-song-albums if you please (some of them have several tracks with less than 1m streams).
At the same time there are some classics that rely heavily on just one song: Hotel California, Synchronicity, A Night at the Opera and Aftermath.
I don't think Wish You Were Here belongs in that last category. It's a 5 track album with the least popular being 12 minutes long with 28m streams. Not bad.
Escape and TOTO IV are in here pretty much because of memes but at least both have a second song with +100m streams.

Man! John Travolta IS the 70's icon.

Harvest, Purple Rain and Hysteria would definitely be somewhere in here if they hadn't been unavailable for long periods of time.

I didn't get to do the 90's, but if I'm not wrong, these are all the albums that reach the 1b mark: Californication, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Metallica, Dookie, Ten, Ready to Die, Life After Death, All Eyez on Me, (What's the Story) Morning Glory, 2001 and Nevermind.

I was looking for a Spanish language album that have those ranges of streams and i only found Luis Miguel's 'Busca Una Mujer" from 1988 with 558,449,499 streams so "Master of puppets" & company goes down a position.

Most not too surprising, but I've never heard of United.
