Biggest Fan Songs - December 2020
Welcome to the December 2020 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.
There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.
Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.
You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

691. Warsaw Village Band – The Owl
Year: 2004
Albums: Uprooting
Biggest Fan: bonnielaurel (#648)
Note: This Polish band also works under the name Kapela ze wsi Warszawa and release their music under two band names, with English and Polish titles. The music is the same as far as I can tell, but I use the English names, because bonnielaurel used them.
Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

This is the second time that bonnielaurel has given me a modernized, energetic tradional folk song. I love this stuff. More!

I wouldn't have guessed this was a Ramones song out of context. Although the playing isn't more complex it sounds more slick and Joey Ramone sings more as if he is part of a New Romantic band or something. It works though.

Even for The Beach Boys this is shamelessly pandering to tropical feelings. I can't help but thinking about the incidental music in episodes of Spongebob. Still, it is better played than that and it does set a mood. If it was more of a continuous song and didn't feel that they pasted three songs together it would have been even better (I mean, the thing outright stops twice), although I'm happy at least that we got three equally good songs.

As per usual by now with The Verlaines I don't quite hear what makes them special, but it makes for a pleasant listen.

Information Society – Ozar Midrashim: 7
"Off in the distance I can see a huge holographic Ronald McDonald walking between the grain elevators and trees/ Oh, if I had the money I'd have 'em make one of those me, then I'd send myself to stalk the landscape and scare everybody"
Some hardcore shit right there.
But after that intro it mostly some dark synth instrumental. It sounds like it comes from a video game, but it went the other way round. Information Society frontman Kurt Harland eventually became a composer for video games and he re-used this composition for the Legacy Of Kain series, not played by me. It's cool, but a bit clichéd with the choral vocals and all. Luckily I have a soft spot for this kind of stuff.

Rose Elinor Dougall – Colour of Water: 8
This one is great! The guitar, the synths, the vocals, the swirl of it all: it just becomes something magnificent. More plays might result in a 9. We'll see.
Madonna – Bedtime Story: 3
I'm not exactly an admirer of Madonna, but one thing she usually has going for her is a good hook. That's even absent here and the resulting song just comes off as very dull to me.

Did I forget to press 'Sumbit' when I wrote my vote for Billy Joel yesterday?
Billy Joel – The River of Dreams: 5
It's a little catchy, but as a mix between African and western music it doesn't quite come off. It doesn't fit Joel's style really.

My knowledge of this band isn't all that deep (even though I've seen them live), but they tend to make fun songs and this is no exception. The piano is great here.

It's a solid, short rocker. Fun to listen to, but doesn't really stick for me now.

The Verlaines - Makes No Difference 4
Information Society - Ozar Midrashim 8
Roae Elinor Dougall - Colour of Water 8
Madonna - Bedtime Story 4 I've heard this more times than I'd have liked as I used to tape the (UK) top 40 and this track was on the last chart I recorded. I listened back to it until my hi-fi chewed it up before I started buying music and well before I got the internet. I can't remember when exactly it was (March 1995? Celine Dion's Think Twice was #1, so it could've been any time that year) but while there are a couple of entries on that chart I look back on fondly (The Bomb by The Bucketheads! N-Trance's Set You Free! Independent Love Song by barely even one-hit-wonders Scarlet!), Bedtime Story is not one of them, however much it appears a trial run for her more engrossing ambient/dance experiments on the Ray of Light album in retrospect.
