Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2020 - Nominations

Post by Jirin »

It's that time of year again. For this game, everybody gets to nominate one album, and has all of December to do it. Then you have all of January to listen to as many as possible, and rank all the ones you managed to hear from best to worst. The results use a win-loss algorithm so you won't help or hurt any albums you don't listen to.

The eligibility requirement is first, the album can not be in the top 50 of the Mega-Critic list. Then, there's a judgment call where some of the most acclaimed albums of the year might show up on year end lists but not the top 50 of the list. But it's up to your judgment whether you think the album you want to nominate falls into this category, that is ineligible because it's probably going to finish really high on year end critic lists.

My nomination: Georgia Anne Muldrow - Mama, You Can Bet!

I discovered her previous album VWETO II from last year's tournament and I think this one's even better.

And I nominated VWETO II last year and didn't even know about this years album ;)

This year I nominate something a bit noisier: Melkbelly - PITH

Lots of options this year!

For me it's a toss-up between the Finnish Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi and the French Slift - Ummon.
I think I'll go for Slift - Ummon, since Mestarin Kynsi is quite high up on the RYM year chart and is musically less accessible.

The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form

I personally adore this album and think it is The 1975's most risky and ambitious project but I personally felt that every little bit of this album was well executed and it is one of the few albums I would give a 10/10 to. However, this album seems to be very polarizing with outlets like Pitchfork praising the album while outlets like The Independent slamming it.

I'm nominating my #4 of 2020 so far: Moor Mother - Circuit City, seeing as I've raved enough about my top 3 (presumably eligible) albums.
All I got inside is vacancy!

In a year where Rina, Jessie and Dua populated tons of critics' lists it's surprising to me that this one didn't get more accolades. I think it's easily on par with that group: The Aces - 'Under My Influence'

Gösta Berlings Saga - Konkret Musik

An impressive instrumental album by a Swedish band that deserves much more recognition.

Eefje de Visser - Bitterzoet

Both because I think it is great and because I'm just curious how much this works for people who don't speak Dutch (and can't probably correctly pronounce the artist's name).

Not sure if this is properly 'Moderately Acclaimed' (lack of reviews and December release...) - if anyone objects, I do have a reserve choice ready to go:

Ichiko Aoba - アダンの風 (Adan no kaze)

I don't think that one would be problematic. Not everyone here looks at RYM for this album tips, as this site is more focused on critics. And even if the album was released way earlier in the year, before the EOY-lists I doubt it would have stood a chance of making it on them.

RYM success does not disqualify an album, as it tends to have very nichey trends anyway.

You can change your pick up to the end of 2020, EST (GMT -5).
