Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Round 3 - Asia (Part 2)
Bracket 3.3.5
Gamelan Gong Kebjar Unknown Ensemble - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) (Indonesia, 1969)
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar (Cambodia, 1970s)
The mesmerizing and intrincate sounds of Gamelan music are more demanding than the Khmer soft-pop of Ros Sereysothea, but my vote goes to them. It goes to show that some music can be simultaneously avantgarde and traditional.
Bracket 3.3.6
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day (Indonesia, 1974)
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na (Cambodia, 1970s)
Stephan, I'm afraid there's a mistake on this bracket. I would have liked that "Genjer Genjer” could have get to the Third Round (it was my nomination) but it lost on Round 2 to Mou Pei Na, an addictive pop tune from an all-stars team of the Cambodian pop scene of the 60-70s (that gets my vote now).
Bracket 3.3.7
Alfred Apaka & His Hawaiians - Na Moku Eha (USA, 1949)
Pynolasa Bamboo Band - Mouna Manu (Papua New Guinea, 1990s?)
Amazing pedal steel on this delicious Hawaiian tune. The bamboo-sounding-like-synths-sequencers of Pynolasa are remarkable too.
Bracket 3.3.8
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Wiyathul (Australia, 2008)
Villagers of Holonga, Vava'u - Faikava Love Song (Tonga, 1981)
A comment I copied from a You Tube user about Gurrumul: "Blind and had to learn to play the guitar upside down because he is left handed and a right handed guitar was all he could find. Disability never stood in his way. Quite beautiful music." Enough said.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Round 3 - Asia (Part 2)
Bracket 3.3.5
Gamelan Gong Kebjar Unknown Ensemble - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) 8
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar 8
Crazy, fast-paced banging of gongs on "Golden Rain," a song that lives up to its title. The ancient sounds of those gongs are interrupted every once in a while throughout the song by a more modern sound, and it works. Ros Sereysothea interprets a song sung by Karen Carpenter, one of my favourite voices. She has a great voice herself and makes the song her own, giving it a nice Cambodian touch. But "Hudjan Mas" gets my vote for being more thrilling to my ears on this Friday evening.
Bracket 3.3.6
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day 7
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na 9.25
I don't hear much of Indonesia in the Ivo's Group song. And as I've said before, for me pop music (wherever in the world its from) doesn’t get more catchy and delightful than "Mou Pei Na."
Bracket 3.3.7
Alfred Apaka & His Hawaiians - Na Moku Eha 9
Pynolasa Bamboo Band - Mouna Manu 8.5
I've called "Mouna Manu" traditional Papa New Guinean house/techno. It's a song that excites me, but I prefer the sunny disposition of "Na Moku Eha."
Bracket 3.3.8
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Wiyathul 8
Villagers of Holonga, Vava'u - Faikava Love Song 8
The most difficult choice of the week for me. Both are beautiful and beautifully straightforward in their own way.

Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Round 3 - Asia (Part 2)
I'm bumping this only to remind Stephan and posible voters that "Genjer Genjer" is not eligible on bracket 2, the correct song is "Mou Pei Na". I'll erase this post when Stephan edit the first one. Sorry.
Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Round 3 - Asia (Part 2)
Bracket 3.3.5
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain)
Winner: Ros Sereysothea - Superstar
The uniqueness of “Hudjan Mas” grows on me with every listen, but I still have to go with Sereysothea’s haunting cover of a Carpenter’s cover (which is one of my all-time favorite vocal performances). It takes a certain voice to give this song the longing, pleading quality it needs: both Karen and Ros have those voices.
Bracket 3.3.6
Winner: Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na
When I first saw this bracket, I got excited (even though I knew better) because “Genjer Genjer” is one of my favorites. But, as Honorio pointed out, I clearly remembered it losing to “Mou Pei Na,” as well. This was an especially difficult choice for me, since “Mou Pei Na” is another huge grower, and it reminds me of the joyful music I’d hear when I accompanied my wife (who is from Laos) to the Temple. Complicating matters is that I was very aware that Dan is right: there doesn’t seem to be much Indonesian influence in the song by Ivo’s Group, which confirmed what Nicolas said last week about traditional songs versus those that are more rock-oriented. Since, in this case, I slightly preferred the rock sound of Ivo, I actually went back through my votes over the past couple of months to see how guilty I was of voting for the more Western-influenced songs in each bracket. It does seem that it’s about half-and-half for me (including last week, when I voted for Ravi in one matchup, and Ananda in the second). I will definitely feel bad if my vote costs “Mou Pei Na,” but I do honestly prefer “That Shocking Shaking Day” in this case.
Bracket 3.3.7
Alfred Aholo Apaka - Na Moku Eha
Pynolasa Bamboo Band - Mouna Manu – RapidShare
Pass. As I said when I voted for “Na Moku Eha” the first time, I have always loved this kind of joyful Hawaiian music. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the link to “Mouna Manu” to work (and also was unable to find it anywhere else). Since I also voted for “Mouna Manu” last time, and I know this would be extremely close, I’ll have to pass on this one.
Bracket 3.3.8
Winner: Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul
Holonga Vava'u- Faikava Love Song
I really like the soothing atmosphere created by “Faikava Love Song,” but I still prefer the wonderful vocals of Yunupingu, and the overall melancholy of his beautiful song.

Not a big fan of the bracket, but Golden Rain sounds better than before (and its competitor is significantly less dangerous) - I can finally appreciate its strange, unique sound.

Pass. Same problem as kingoftonga's.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul
Holonga Vava'u- Faikava Love Song
Favourite song of the week - because of the vocals, of course. Another great singer of World Cup (well, last time I voted against Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, but this song appeals to me much more because of my western - oriented tastes, I guess).

Stephan can you give me until midnight to vote?
Re: AM Foreign World Cup: Round 3 - Asia (Part 2)
Various Artists - Hudjan Mas (Golden Rain) 4.25
Ros Sereysothea - Superstar 4
At 2:54 through "Hudjan Mas" there's a backbeat that sounds like jungle/drum & bass. Terrific fusion between gamelan music and Western influences.
Bracket 3.3.6
Ivo's Group - That Shocking Shaking Day 4.25
Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron and Dara Dam Chan - Mou Pei Na 4.25
Pass. I love both these gems of South Asian pop from the 70s.
Bracket 3.3.7
Alfred Aholo Apaka - Na Moku Eha 4.25
Pynolasa Bamboo Band - Mouna Manu 4.25
I really love Hawaiian music and this song sounds like it's been recorded in 1929. Great!! Pynolasa were my own choice, they're amazing too
Bracket 3.3.8
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu- Wiyathul 4
Holonga Vava'u- Faikava Love Song 4.25
Gurrumul has a great voice but I'm not a huge fan of the song. The field recording athmosphere of "Faikava Love Song" is gorgeous
