What was #1 on the day you were born?

Post by nicolas »

Go to this site and you will know. You can chose the best (or least worse) song between UK, USA, AUS, CAN and GER.

For me it was Edwin Starr's "War" in the States (25 Aug 1970)

Okay, Feb. 13 1993:

No Limit - 2 Unlimited in the UK
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston everywhere else.

Now that should explain any tendency to bipolarity! :D

I already knew that "My Sweet Lord" (one of my all-time favorite songs) was #1 in the U.S. the day I was born (January 1, 1971). It always seemed very appropriate to me, since it definitely fits my "constantly searching for meaning in life" personality.

The other #1s were:

UK: I Hear You Knockin'-Dave Edmunds
Canada: Isn't it a Pity-George Harrison
Australia/Germany: Song of Joy-Miguel Rios

I'm beginning to understand why George Harrison was always my favorite Beatle...

August 10, 1956

US - The Platters - My Prayer
UK - Doris Day - Whatever Will Be Will Be
Germany - Heimweh - Tell a Friend
Canadian - not available until 1957
Australia - Les Baxter - Poor People of Paris

I don't believe any of these songs made my top 4000 or perhaps any of the lists in the latest song poll. Perhaps my enjoyment of the 1960's and 70's can be appreciated in view of these birthday songs. Please let me know which one of these you prefer over STH.

Ok, so what are the odds that within 12 posts the same birth date occurs twice.
I'm 10th August 1974!

Not a bad list but I was hoping for better.

UK - Rock Your Baby – George McCrea
US – Feel Like Makn’ Love – Roberta Flack
Aus – S-S-S Single Bed – Fox
Can – Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me – Elton John

Before I plugged in my birthday I was thinking- "Oh great! 1991! Lots of great music came from then. "Loveless", "Achtung Baby", "Out of Time", "Screamadelica", "The Low End Theory", "Blue Lines", "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", and of course- "Nevermind"- to name a few. Now I know not all of these albums were all that commercially successful, but there's got to be at least some great music that hit number 1 on my birthday..."

Nope. Bryan Adams and a commercial jingle for Bacardi. That's all I got. Just goes to show how warped one's idea of what is popular during a time period can be. But maybe that's great. Maybe when kids in their 20's 20 years from now do this they'll be expecting Radiohead and Tame Impala to be their number 1 songs. Who knows?

April 27th 1965

UK: The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride"
US, AUS & CAN: Herman's Hermits' "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter"
GER: Petula Clark's "Downtown"

Never heard before that tune by Herman's Hermits, on a first listen I found it insufferably bland. And, as everyone in that Youtube link mention, the singer resembles too dangerously to Justin Bieber (and I'm afraid not only it's a question of haircut, every era has this kind of watered-down products).

The complete 25 August 1970

UK : Elvis Presley - The Wonder Of You (deliciously kitsch)
USA : Edwin Starr - War (great)
Australia : Simon & Garfunkel - El Condor pasa (not the best SG song, far from that)
Canada : Mashmakan - As The Years Go By (I didn't know that, well that's very forgettable)
Germany : Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime (love that song)

Thriller was no.1 pretty much everywhere on my birthdate. Apparently, Syncronicity was initially released on that same date too. Singleswise though, oh dear..:

AUS: Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
UK: New Edition "Candy Girl"
USA: Irene Cara "Flashdance... What a Feeling"

It seems like we were only born around month or so apart. Have to agree with Moonbeam about 'True'. As for that Geier Sturzberg single, it's err... worth checking out.

AUS: Zombie- The Cranberries
GER: Tear Don't Lie- Mark 'Oh

Other than Zombie, this list basically sums up all the music I actively despise.

Okay.... Well me and Nick were born in the same week because the #1's were exactly the same. Kind of like the birthday problem I guess.

US: I Can Help - by Billy Swan

UK: Gonna Make You A Star -by David Essex

Canada: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - by Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Australia: I Honestly Love You - by Olivia Newton-John

Germany: Kung Fu Fighting - by Carl Douglas

Interesting mix. The only ones I've heard previously are 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' and 'Kung Fu Fighting'
I love a bunch of BTO songs, and Kung fu Fighting is a really fun song to me.
