Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 12 (2021) - Submissions Now Open!

Post by Brad »

It's that time again... time to submit your album lists for the 2021 version (12th annual) of Moderately Acclaimed Albums!

Best Moderately Acclaimed Albums is a voting game where only albums and EPs not ranked in the top 1000* are eligible. This includes all "bubblers" and completely unacclaimed albums and EPs.
*Note that this is a change this year.

There will be a single elimination draw with 128 albums, and now it's time to pick them.

Send me an ordered list of ten nominations via pm. Please include the artist name and album name as they appear on AM, as well as the AM rank (AM rank is important! Please don't make me track all these down!).

You have until Sunday, February 14th to make nominations.

I will select nominations as follows:
First I will go through and pick all the first place albums
Then, I will go through and pick all the second place albums
Then, the third place albums, etc, until the draw fills up.

As noted above, we've pulled back on the eligible pool slightly, eliminating from contention the top 1000 albums per AM ranking (formerly top 500). The other rule change we are going with starting this year is: no albums entered into the draw of the previous three tournaments will be eligible. In other words, once an album gets in, it will be at least three years until it is eligible again. This is for variety!

No more than 50 albums ranked 1500 or higher will be picked, no more than 75 ranked 2000 or higher, and no more than 100 ranked 2500 or higher, so make sure you spread your picks out through the entire list.

I will then sort the selections into quadrants based on their rankings, and then create a bracket by randomly sorting each quadrant.

During the competition period (which will begin in early March), we will choose one match-up from each quadrant (starting at the top of each quadrant) in the field and square them off against each other in a week-long voting period. (For clarification, week 1 of the competition will include the top match-up from each quadrant; week 2 will include the second match-up from each quadrant, etc.).

Additional rules:
- No one person can nominate more than one album by the same artist.
- Albums that have previously won the tournament are not eligible.
- No albums that qualified for the 2018-2020 games Moderate game are eligible.
- No albums from 2020 are eligible (the eventual winner of the Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2020 will automatically be entered).

Don't get caught up in all these parameters - I've made it easy for you by including the list of non-eligible albums below!

The actual voting won't start until early March (a couple weeks after the bracket is published - exact date tbd).

Here's a list of the albums that are ineligible per the above stated restrictions (please check your picks!):

As a final (personal) note - this will be my 10th year running this tournament, and I've come to realize it's time to step down and let someone else take over. But don't despair, we already have a successor to take over in 2022, and I promise you will be delighted with the choice! I will hold off on announcing this person until I get a cue from him for the go-ahead. This tournament has been a lot of fun for me and I appreciate the participation of each and every one of you. Moderately Acclaimed will live on!

As always, looking forward to seeing your lists!

This is a tournament for albums. If there's an album with a specific classical work you'd like to nominate, feel free - just please be specific on the album - conductor, orchestra, etc. so we're all on the same page. It also helps a lot if the album is widely available for everyone to enjoy!

After a week, I have 12 lists, from the following forumers:
Bang Jan
bonnielaurel
Brad
DaveC
Holden
Jirin
Listyguy
Madzong
mileswide
Romain
Schüttelbirne
spiritualized

Obviously, there's plenty of time left (until February 14th!) - just want to throw out periodic reminders.

Also, I'd like to share the excellent news regarding the next (2022) edition of Moderately Acclaimed (and forward)…

Honorio will be taking over as leader as I step down following this year.
Moderately Acclaimed is my favorite tournament on these forums (and I've been told I'm not alone in this)…
I can think of no-one I'd rather see run the game than Honorio, whose contributions to these boards (since before I arrived) have consistently displayed the utmost in quality and devotion. I know that in his hands, MA will take off to greater heights and I couldn't be happier.

Many thanks for taking this on, H!

Thank you for your kind words, Brad!!
It would be an honour and a pleasure for me to host the successive editions of this wonderful game, my favourite on the forum (even if I'm also enjoying immersing myself on the full discographies for the Artist of the Month game). I'm not planning to introduce big changes on the dynamics of the game, I think it's perfect like that. I think I'll continue with the new (>1000) rules.
My only aim is to be able to be a host half as good as Brad. He was a perfect host, with a perfect timing, without a single mistake in 10 long years and without significant confrontations between voters. The bar is really high but I'll try to get close to it! One standing ovation (not moderate at all) to Brad!!

Are we allowed to know the two repeats?

Very interested but I understand if you can’t reveal them yet :)
