If I divided the discography of R.E.M. in three periods (with 5 albums each), U2's discography can be divided in 5 series of trilogies:
a) The Dublin years, the early 1980s, from "Boy" to "War," developing their own epic post-punk sound as produced by Steve Lillywhite (my favourite U2 period by the way).
b) The breakthrough years, the mid-to-late 1980s, from "The Unforgettable Fire" to "Rattle & Hum," incorporating influences of ambient, heartland-rock and Americana, beginning a long-term relationship with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois as producers and receiving an enormous share of backlash for a perceived self-righteousness at the end of this period.
c) The reinvention years, the 1990s, from "Achtung Baby" to "Pop," incorporating electronica to their music, self-mockery to their image and irony to their lyrics.
d) The back-to-the-roots years, the 2000s, from "All That You Can't Leave Behind" to "No Line on the Horizon," going back to their trademark sound quite successfully, even if by the end of the period the formula seems exhausted.
e) The decadence years, the 2010s, with an unfinished trilogy trying with different producers to recapture the spark of their early years but ending being only formulaic. Their next album should be named "Songs of Decadence."

After probably the happiest summer of my life (having toured and recorded with my band quite successfully) and just before joining the University I had almost a couple of weeks off, all alone at home with a steady diet of Herman Hesse's "Demian" and U2's "War" (well, really The Cure's "Pornography" and Echo & the Bunnymen's "Porcupine" too). And, although there's no apparent connection, for me both pieces of art are inextricably linked forever. And tell me, do you have the mark of Cain too?

Songs of innocence. Ambitious from minute one, their debut is a concept album about transition from childhood to manhood.
3. The Joshua Tree (1987)
U2's fascination with the mythical America added roots rock flavours and political edge creating their most acclaimed album.
4. Achtung Baby (1991)
"The sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree," Bono said. U2 reinventing themselves just in time for the new decade.
5. The Unforgettable Fire (1984)
Their first collaboration with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois introduced ambient influences that added deepness to their sound.

Mainly written by The Edge (with key help on lyrics by Bono), driven by a superb (martial) drum pattern by Larry Mullen Jr. and featuring a violin by Steve Wickham (later on the Waterboys), the song boards that thorny task on the best way possible, not taking sides but defiantly condemning violence. And the image of Bono "waving a white flag through crimson mist (created by a combination of wet weather and hot lights)" on the live music video is no less than iconic.
2. New Year's Day (1983)
A wonderful piano by The Edge, a powerful bass by Adam Clayton and a, ahem, epic vocal take by Bono. Under a blood red sky.
3. One (1991)
The song that saved U2 amidst the conflictive Berlin sessions. And one of the songs I enjoy the most playing live, it's cathartic.
4. With or Without You (1987)
The art of crescendo. They made it first with "Bad" but they perfected it here, now crescendos being a capital part of U2 sound.
5. I Will Follow (1980)
A song about unconditional love (inspired by the death of Bono's mother when he was 14 years old). With a glorious glockenspiel.

Hi!
U2 was never a band I liked.
I appreciated a few of their records (mostly Joshua and War) but I always though they were overrated. When Rattle & Hum appeared I thought that listening to any of its albums was a waste of time.
Suddenly Achtung Baby! arrived, and from the first notes of Zoo Station I realized something very good had happened. This album is far and away the best they ever made. Zooropa is a great successor, and I cannot avoid choosing Joshua in third, mostly because of its great start.
I had never listened to The Unforgettable fire and Pop before this month, but I have found two albums worth appreciation (even if they are irregular). I place these before their debut trilogy because I think they sound less dated.
For me the rest of their discography (the ones I knew before this month and the ones I didn’t) is not worth a comment.

How do remixes work for song titles? For instance, would the "Perfecto Mix" of "Mysterious Ways" count as a separate song? Or would its vote get merged into "Mysterious Ways" regular version?

When I think about U2 these days it’s hard not to cringe as an immediate reaction given how cloying and obnoxious they’ve become, but I’m really glad we did this poll because it reminded me that they really were an incredible band for a while and their best stuff holds up well.
