David Bowie acknowledged Comme d'Habitude as the inspiration for Life on Mars too after he failed to get the rights to write English lyrics for it.

God I hate Claude François, one of the worst scourges of French popular music... He (and other ye-ye artists) slaughtered a lot of US standards, but "J'attendrai" is probably the worst offender.

That makes it fairly funny that a cover of one of his few listenable songs, Comme d'habitude, became a US standard.
