Rate the Album, 2020, Final Ratings

Post by Holden »

Thanks for a fun ride on this. It was more of an experiment than anything, and I had no idea how many people would participate. So how many did?
16! Here they are:
Holden
mileswide
Arcade Fire
TheLastEnemy
Cold Butterfly
Schüttelbirne
Rocky Raccoon
spiritualized
madzong
carlos74
Starchman46
Edre Peraza
Wisnu Tirta Aji
Romain
FrankLotion

So for those sixteen, here are the results of a year of keeping track of ratings!
For reference, here is what is taken into account by my formula.
1. An album must have been rated by one-third of the forumers. So it needs six ratings to be considered.
2. More ratings means a higher rating.

However, each forumer is also given a weight. This weight is determined by:
1. The amount of albums rated (more=higher weight)
2. The variability of the ratings (higher variability=higher weight)
3. The amount of 10/10 and 1/10 ratings. (More extreme ratings=lower weight)

This finally mounts to a score out of 100. Below you will find the complete list, in one post. 80 albums had at least six ratings. You will find the format below somewhat imitates the MegaCritic format, because it works so well! You will see this format:

Bring on the next edition! Can't say I expected Jump Rope Gazers to be so low considering the praise it's fetched elsewhere on the forum (not to mention its unmistakable brilliance).
All I got inside is vacancy!

What don't people like about the Jessie Ware album? Even if you disagree that it's one of the best albums of the year, it's hard for me to picture anyone outright hating it.

I'm also surprised to see the Wire album up in the top 20. As a big fan of the band's classic work, I tried out that album and didn't find anything memorable about it.

I found it really uneven. Spotlight is arguably the song of the year, Remember Where You Are is fantastic, there are a couple other very good songs, but the stretches from tracks 2-4 and 7-10 are a slog for me to get through. I don't get the appeal of the title track. I know someone else here echoed the same point, but I have no idea why it caught on with the critics and Remember Where You Are didn't.
