Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2020 - RESULTS

Post by Jirin »

The ballots are in. The results are interesting, because unlike previous years there's no strong consensuses. A lot of really divisive albums that got a few near top votes and a few near bottom votes. But, the winner did win head to head against every other album.

The scoring for this game works a little different than other games in that instead of getting points for specific rankings, every album is matched up head to head based on which one is ranked higher on more lists. And wins against higher ranked albums are worth more than wins against lower ranked albums.

#26: The Aces - Under My Influence
Nominated by: rdwdbob
Record: 0-24-1
Ballots: 15
Top fans: safetycat (2), bonnielaurel (3), rdwdbob (4)
Not fans: Jirin (25), Schuttelbirne (25), Brad (26), Rob (25)

#25: Moor Mother - Curcuit City
Nominated By: mileswide
Record: 1-23-1
Ballots: 16
Top fans: mileswide (1), sonofsamiam (1), Jirin (2), Schuttelbirne (3)
Not fans: DaveC (25), rdwdbob (26), safetycat (26), bonnielaurel (24/25), spiritualized (10/11)

#24: Boniface - Boniface
Nominated by: votingbloc
Record: 3-22-0
Ballots: 15
Top fans: rdwdbob (2), bootsy (3), safetycat (4)
Not fans: mileswide (25), rumpdoll (25), sonofsamiam (24/25)

#23: The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
Nominated by: Edre Peraza
Record: 4-21-0
Ballots: 16
Top fans: bootsy (4)
Not fans: Schuttelbirne (26), Rob (26)

#22: iLiKeTRAiNs - Kompromat
Nominated by: TheLastEnemy
Record: 5-19-1
Ballots: 15
Top fans: Romain (3)
Not fans: bonnielaurel (25/25)

The Moor Mother result is really interesting because four people had it top 3, and nobody else had it higher than 16 (Except for spiritualized's 10/11).

I've been looking forward to this, and I'm already shocked at the results for Moor Mother. 2020 belonged to her (music-wise) and she deserved better than that (imo). No more wires, I guess. :(

I have also put The Aces last (though I only ranked 23 albums)

Kompromat is probably the biggest disappointment of the lot for me, it's a genre I really enjoy but it lacks so much energy.

I actually completely randomly ended up at an iLiKeTRAINs concert about 15 years ago. For my first vacations as someone with a proper job, I went to Cork to visit a friend who was au pair in a small town nearby. We headed to the city and randomly stumbled in a pub where a lot of people paid us a lot of drinks, and one of them was the owner of a nearby venue where the band was playing during that night... I don't have much memories of the concert though, but to be fair I don't think I ever drank as much as that night (quantity wise not amount of alcohol wise, like I have been drunker but never has my stomach been so full with liquids, cider actually... still, I was pretty drunk)

Not that I'm surprised Moor Mother is low (genres like free jazz tend to be polarizing), but I struggle with how the album's record can be 1-23-1 when 2 people voted it #1. I guess this methodology rewards albums that are more in the middle than loved/hated, but that just seems weird to me.

Anyway, not my poll!

I was curious about this too. I'd be interested to see how different the results might be if another methodology was used.

Here's the total list of rankings for Moor Mother: 1, 1, 2, 3, 10/11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 24, 25, 26, 26

The reason I use this methodology is more because it prevents albums that get fewer listens from being penalized. It makes a non-vote truly a non-vote, as opposed to a mild negative like you get in the decade polls. This wouldn't have been a big problem this year because only one album got less than 15 ballots, but some previous years it would have. It has the effect that very high ratings are not the highest weighted, but it does ensure that the album that wins is the one that would win any elimination bracket style game. Or the album that would win a runoff election.

I wouldn't say it helps albums in the middle, so much as it helps consensus top-third albums over more polarizing albums.

I will say, the winning album got 10 out of 15 ballots in the top ten, and only two in the bottom half. With conventional scoring, I honestly think any of the top five might have won and it would have been really close. I can send someone the raw rankings in a grid if anyone wants to run the numbers.

Somewhat surprised Adan no Kaze didn't make the top 10, even though I knew it would finish last on Mileswide's list. Regardless of whether you think it is a masterpiece or not, it seems an album that is hard to hate. Or do it's 'not fans' dislike ambient-like albums in general.

I really thought it was going to be the winning album even! Very surprised indeed, it seemed to me that it corresponded to the expectations of the people taking part in this game. I liked it very much anyway.

The album that is actually ambient is in the top 10 so I don't think that's the only issue. Personaly I found it nice but forgettable, and I'd think I am one of the people who listens to ambient the most around here.

I agree that Aoba's album was largely forgettable. I expected it to place high, but not take number 1. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I think number 1 is a rock album by a band that starts with the second letter of the alphabet.

Adan no Kaze would have been my #1 and Moor Mother in my top 5 had I voted (though the reason I didn't vote is because I didn't have time to listen to half of the albums, so who knows). I expect Aoba to do pretty well in the general poll though.

And impressive choices from 6 to 10! I'll get my thanks to Jirin and all nominators out the way now, while throwing garlands at the ranking of my outstanding discovery of the game, Konkret Musik. I didn't foresee it landing on the doorstep of the top 5, so #1 could be a similar departure from our predictions...

#1 Calibro 35 - Momentum
Nominated by: Romain
Record: 25-0-0
Ballots: 15
Fans: Romain (1), rumpdoll (2)

I'm expecting the order of the top 5 to be controversial because the 3-5 position albums got more top 5 votes than the top two, so I thought I'd give a full list of the rankings each received in case anyone wants to apply other scoring methods to see how the results change:

Calibro 35: 1, 2, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, UR
Slift: 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, UR
Arboretum: 1, 2, 2, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 8, 12, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20
Dan Deacon: 1, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 15, 19, 19, 21
The Beths: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 7, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 13, 13, 14, 15, 26

Okay, I actually double checked the numbers I entered my ranking program for the top 5 and realized I did make a mistake. I input mileswide's ranking of Mystic Familiar as #16 instead of #6.

I reran it, and it didn't change the victor, but it changed the order a bit, and it made it so Calibro 35 did NOT get a head to head sweep:
5. The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers 20-2-3
4. Arboretum - Let It All In 20-4-1
3. Slift - Ummon 22-3-0
2. Dan Deacon - Mystic Familiar 22-2-1
1. Calibro 35 - Momentum 24-1-0

And I manually checked Calibro's head to head vote against all of them, and it lost to Mystic Familiar 8-7, but beat all the others 8-7. So it really is close enough among these five that a single other vote would have made any of the five win.

Great to see my nomination (Slift's Ummon) and Mystic Familiar doing so well. I hadn't heard enough albums to participate, but I will check out 'Momentum' and some of Arboretum's work because of this poll.

Looking at the results, it seems Psychedelia is doing really well!

I also didn't expect Calibro 35 to win this, I thought for sure The Beths were winning. I can't say I'm disappointed since I ranked MOMENTUM on my number 7.

Almost exactly a year ago (13.02.20) I nominated "Fail It Till You Make It" for the Weekly Chart, and it spectacularly lost by coming in last: http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=2&t=8500
So either the voting basis is vastly different, my song selection was weak or the album grew in appreciation. (It really doesn't matter, I just thought it was an interesting coincidence).
