2021 AMF Tournament of Champions: Round 2, Part 1
2021 AMF Tournament of Champions: Round 2, Part 1
Hello! Welcome to Round 1 of the 2021 AMF Tournament of Champions! Here are the rules for this game overall, as a refresher:
Each of the 27 competitors submitted one album and ten songs. The ten songs each compete in one of ten rounds, each with a different type of competition. Meanwhile, the albums will be rated (out of ten) as time goes on. After each round, each competitor will receive points based on their performance in the round. At the end of all ten rounds, the points will be totaled from each round and the rating of the album, and a winner will be declared!
This week's rules:
The second round is going to make use of the poll creation feature. You will pick your favorite three of the nine songs in each round, and the top three from each will move onto a final round of nine. Points will be distributed based on poll performance. Here are your songs:
Ben Folds Five | Regrets
Bert Kaempfert | A Swingin' Safari
Donna Lewis | I Love You Always Forever
Dream Theater | Constant Motion
Grinderman | Palaces of Montezuma
Kenshi Yonezu | Kanden (感電)
Mates of State | Unless I'm Led
Paul Robeson | Joe Hill
Rae Morris | Do It
Playlist
Next up, the albums! Here is a list of every album: List
However, to make the albums more digestible, I will be 'featuring' one album a week for those who wish to follow along this way. This week's album is:
Tindersticks | The Something Rain (2012)
Alright, in conclusion:
Three favorite songs from the nine above, and vote using the poll feature! You have exactly seven days (February 20th) from the time of this post!
Additionally, rate albums from the list out of ten. You can do this at whatever pace you like, but post your ratings in the most recent thread! And you can always rate previously featured albums as well!

Great set of songs but my choices weren’t that hard. Grinderman, Rae Morris, and Mates of State stood above the rest. Also I’ve never listened to Dream Theater but that was not what I expected (though not an unpleasant surprise)

Donna, Kenshi and Grinderman for me. Especially Kenshi Yonezu, will look into more of his stuff.

CHAMPS - Vamala - 3/10. Not really my cup of tea. Tedious and this kind of pop (don't see what's indie about it) only works if the melodies are catchy as hell. Not the case here.
And voted for Grinderman, Dream Theater and Bert Kaempfer (nice variety there !!)

These results are kind of wild to me! Grinderman is absolutely dominating!

Two 8's in a row! Tindersticks here produce well crafted middle-aged chamber pop. it sounds to me as if they made an album to be proud of, not a 'product' for an audience. Good for them.

I think familiarity tends to go a long way in these polls. The song already appeared in our End of Decade Song poll, so many here already seem to know and love it.
What's really wild is that cover art for the Bert Kaempfert album:
Well, I laughed. The song is great though.
Anyway, what I came here for:
Tindersticks - The Something Rain: 7

Tindersticks - The Something Rain 5.7
My highlights: Chocolate, Frozen
My local radio station used to play the Bert Kaempfert tune as its 'Friday Feelgood Song' every week. Back to back with Donna Lewis, it brought back the 90s so vividly for me I thought I was writing for Buzzfeed in the early 2010s. Only know Dream Theater from The Spirit Carries On, which seemed to be inescapable in Jakarta when I was there, but this selection is blistering; I'll have to investigate them further!
My votes (ranked): Constant Motion, I Love You Always Forever, Regrets

Pretty good, not as good as the other Tindersticks I've heard.

Same as Holden, I remain faithful to the first two albums.

I voted Ben Folds Five, Donna Lewis, and Dream Theater. Unfortunately the latter act, an American Progressive Rock band, eliminated here. For Ben Folds Five, I only know them for their power ballad, "Brick". For Donna Lewis, just listen to her and that's why I nominated her on every AMF polls because it's a good choice for unacclaimed acts including Donna Lewis. For Dream Theater, they are familiar in Indonesia, their songs (including their best song in my mind, the power ballad, "Another Day"), always played on Rock programs on some radio stations.
