AMF Favorite Songs of 2020 - RESULTS

Post by acroamor »

Hello everyone!

I'm excited to roll out my second EOY poll, and the first poll I've ran where I felt totally confident with Excel the whole time, which is why I was able to get this rollout done much more quickly. This was a great year for participation. We had 57 lists submitted, a nice bump from last year's 50, and across all of them, over 1800 different songs listed.

I'll start by listing all the voters with unique #1 song choices. These songs only featured on one list each, but they topped them:

panam: Angelica García - Jicama
rumpdoll: Basia Bulat - No Control
Miguel: Brandy Clark (featuring Randy Newman) - A Bigger Boat
Krurze: Bullion - We Had A Good Time
Romain: La Femme - Cool Colorado
SL3: Purity Ring - stardew
nicolas: Sturgill Simpson - Breakers Roar
Kendon: The Suicide Machines - Bully in Blue
Greg: Bonny Light Horseman - The Roving

If I were to roll out the entire spreadsheet, all of these tracks would be tied for the 310th position overall.

And since we've gotten such a large participation this year, I'll be rolling out the top 300 songs this year. I'll be doing 300-151 in a large batch today and I'll be steadily including more information as we approach the top of the list.

I was a big fan of this song since its release and was surprised it didn't get more attention. Perhaps I just couldn't resist a combination of two of my recent pop favorites including Caroline Polachek delivering a verse in Italian.
acroamor wrote: Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:42 pm 188. Owen Pallett - A Bloody Morning
This song was the biggest late riser on my list -- it went from around 50 all the way up to #4 over the last couple weeks before I published my list. I encourage everyone to give it a focused listen, including reading the lyrics, even if you've already heard the song. It didn't stand out to me my first few listens but I now consider it one of the most stunningly beautiful songs in recent memory, and Pallett's best next to The Riverbed.

Very happy to see these make the cut! "Mermaid Dreams" is so enchanting, like Bat for Lashes meets synthwave. "Eternal Summer" is so gripping as well, with the searing guitar giving way to a hypnotic groove.

I wish more people considered "Microphones in 2020" a song. I get the album philosophy, but it is a single track and isn't divided into parts. In fact, to me, it's more a song than an album. (It just happens to be so long that it fills an album.) But then I'm a much more song-oriented person, so I may be biased.

It seems in this case, and in the case of our other big "album-length song" of the year, that most people were inclined to include them on the albums side than on the songs, but I do see your point.

My personal number one is out of the Top 300: Angelica Garcia's "Jicama". It's sad everything from Angelica was even ignored in the votation for songs and albums.

Anyway, I'll be waiting the playlist for the Top 300. It'd be good to check all those songs out of my radar last year.

Cha Cha Palace was in the top ten of my albums list. I’m glad Angelica Garcia is getting praise here, her music is really relatable to me.

This outside the top 100 is a big surprise to me. I thought our forum would love this song. Hope this doesn't indicate how well Roisin will do in the album poll.

At least for me, both Roisin Machine and Inner Song landed in my top 10 but neither album had true standout songs; I still voted for a few from both but not at particularly high placements.

I can whip up a top 300 playlist. I've got some free time. I'll update it later, too.

Nvm: someone else is working on it!

And that's it for today! Should be on track to do 100-51 tomorrow, then 50-21 on Friday, and the top 20 on Sunday.

A lot of very strong songs in this last group, just barely missing the top 100. "Caution" in particular was less than a hundredth of a point away from #100. I'm a little surprised that "sons" and "Microphones in 2020" scored so differently, even though I expect The Microphones to beat Kashiwa Daisuke on the albums side.

And Holden, I believe Moonbeam is working on a playlist already

Some comments for some of the songs that were on my (extended) list (and for some that weren't):
296. Nathaniel Rateliff - And It's Still Alright
Wonderfully warm and comforting song that came out rather early in the year, but never lost its appeal to me. The album wasn't as good, unfortunately.
288. Nadine Shah - Buckfast
I believe I couldn't fit this in my Top 100 anymore, otherwise it might be a few places higher. Guess I'll have to kick myself for that (and miss).
284. Ete Large - You're Getting Older Now
I didn't expect this to show up at all, so this was a pleasant surprise. For me this is the standout track of the album and the best rock song of 2020.
271. Moor Mother - Act 1 - Working Machine
[...]
210. Moor Mother - Act 4 - No More Wires
Circuit City is an incredible album and these two are the highlights. I don't think Moor Mother will have any other tracks though, which is sad after the year she's had. I've listened to five of the albums she released last year and there were others I didn't get to. She's also a genre chameleon going from Free Jazz to No Wave to Sound Collage and excelling at all of them.
265. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Overseas
I hope this is not the highest placement for a song of his. What've I Done to Help deserves to show up.
263. Calibro 35 - Stan Lee
From the first time I listened to the album about a year ago, this was the standout track and I'm glad others discovered it as well.
242. Les Amazones d'Afrique ft. Kandy Guira - Sisters
I have a feeling the album will do better than the individual songs here, but "Sisters" is clearly a standout, even if I like "Power" a bit more.
238. Arbouretum - Let It All In
This was just outside of my number 200 if I'm not mistaken, which is still high enough for me to say that I totally get why this is so high. The album is a bit lacking, though (imo).
225. Nate Wooley - Seven Storey Mountain VI
[...]
201. The Microphones - Microphones in 2020
This is interesting. I would have expected the latter to be far higher, but I specifically didn't put tracks filling out albums on my list (I did have a symphony though). I will need to check the Wooley album out again; when I listened to it I found the production to be rather muddled which disappointed me because the music is totally on my wave.
208. Lingua Ignota - O Ruthless Great Divine Director
I was hoping this would finish higher. She also had an amazing year with a lot of unique material. Her takes on "Jolene" and "Wicked Game" are superior to the originals and also made my list (though they obviously won't show up here).
204. Bonny Light Horseman - Bonny Light Horseman
I was thinking back and forth which song on the album was my favorite; it was between this one, "The Roving" and "Jane Jane". I ultimately decided on this, but I hope to see another track by the group higher up.
203. Keleketla! - International Love Affair
The album was a great discovery for me and I hope to see more of this collective.
199. Dan Weiss and Starebaby - Accina
I was shrieking maybe a bit when I saw this. Starebaby's an amazing group and this is the best track on the album. Jazz/Metal Fusion at its finest with the greatest guitar work of the year.
188. Owen Pallett - A Bloody Morning
I like this, but it wasn't in my Top 100. "Perseverance of the Saints" was, and I think it's a superior track.
166. Aksak Maboul - Dramuscule
This is a great track from a great album and I would probably like it even more if I could understand what they're singing.
160. Kaja Draksler Octet - Away!
151. The 1975 ft. Phoebe Bridgers - Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America
It's baffling to me how good this song is compared to the album which I found to be actually bad (one of the few bad albums of the year). Maybe it's the Bridgers connection.
149. Sufjan Stevens - Video Game
One of the highlights of the album; I'm still not sure if I prefer this or "My Rajneesh". This has the advantage that it doesn't have an overly long outro.
143. Gard Nilssen‘s Supersonic Orchestra - Bøtteknott / Elastic Circle
Best instrumental jazz track of the year. Apparently not everybody adores this which is something I can't (and don't want to) understand.
136. Halsey - You Should Be Sad
"I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you"
I did NOT vote for this song and I wouldn't because I disliked it from the first time I heard, specifically because the quote above is one of the most stupid lines I've heard in a song the past year.
288. Nadine Shah - Buckfast
285. Waxahatchee - Ruby Falls
273. Die Sterne - Hey Dealer
262. Philip Glass & Paul Leonard-Morgan - Walk to School
242. Les Amazones d'Afrique ft. Kandy Guira - Sisters
223. Simmy ft. Sino Miloso - Ngihamba Nawe
215. Emilie Zoé - The Painter
211. The Psychedelic Furs - No One
208. Lingua Ignota - O Ruthless Great Divine Director
166. Aksak Maboul - Dramuscule
151. The 1975 ft. Phoebe Bridgers - Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America
128. Hen Ogledd - Trouble
121. Arlo Parks - Eugene
109. The Flaming Lips - Flowers of Neptune 6
106. Bob Dylan - Key West (Philosopher Pirate)
Looks like the 2020 Songs So Far tournament brought some discoveries. I expect some others to show up still.

I listed it under the remix originally because the remix was from 2020, whereas the original was from 2019. I've now edited it to reflect both versions of the track, as I counted votes for either version as one.

Circuit City is an incredible album and these two are the highlights. I don't think Moor Mother will have any other tracks though, which is sad after the year she's had.
Like you said re: Les Amazones, I expect/hope she will do better on the albums front, lamentable MAA performance notwithstanding...

I don't see how an RTJ fan could listen to these two tracks and think Ooh La La is better. Firing Squad is arguably the most intense and ambitious song they have released to date. I've said this a couple times before, but the hook of Ooh La La is irritating to me and makes it arguably my least favorite song on the album.

I fall in this camp, too. I nearly ranked "Firing Squad" high enough to be a Biggest Fan, while "Ooh La La" is my least favorite song on the album. (The only one I'd give a 4/10.)

I'm making some nice discoveries thanks to this list. Woo hoo! Looking forward to really digging in. There is a lot of music I love from 2020, but there is a lot I feel I missed out on.

I can't believe "Safaera" is in the Top 100. Not the smartest lyrics but hey..it's Bad Bunny!

I've compiled 51-310 (including the sole #1s), but I don't know if acroamor wants me to reveal 301-309 yet as they are also included in the playlist.

I listed it under the remix originally because the remix was from 2020, whereas the original was from 2019. I've now edited it to reflect both versions of the track, as I counted votes for either version as one.
Thank you :P

You are probably one of the only people on the forum that can understand the lyrics! Either way, that song was top 5 on Pitchfork's and a bunch of other critics' lists, so it was inevitable to show up somewhere.

Here is the playlist so far. It's missing the following songs:

199. Dan Weiss and Starebaby - "Accina"
201. The Microphones - "Microphones in 2020"
222. Frank Ocean - "Dear April [Justice Remix]"

Let me know if you can find them and I'll add them.

I made sure to check the lyrics just in case, found them a bit questionable, but decided to go ahead with my top 50 ranking for it anyway~ it's like the secret Spanish "WAP" that no one here noticed, but less creative (lyrically) and somehow more horny?

The comparison with WAP lyrics is appropriate. I think it's a kind of tribute to old reggaeton songs (from the 90s, an exercise of nostalgia, that why the art cover of the album portraits a child in some imaginary chaotic world) when lyrics were explicit and it could be misogynist in some parts. I understand the appeal of the song and actually I added some Bad Bunny songs on my personal list, but Safaera is not my piece of cake.

Can’t believe Jump Rope Gazers didn’t hit 30! Almost more shocking is it being unranked by critics, since the album Jump Rope Gazers is sitting around 110 on the critics list!
