Lullabies

Post by Nassim »

Hi everyone !
I am the happy and proud father of a little Myriam born on January 1st !
I am in the lookout for songs that make for good lullabies.

Her favorite so far it seems is Cat Power's cover of Sea of Love
I tend to sing to her Queens of the Stone Age's This Lullaby (though I never remember the 2nd verse's lyrics) or, obviously, Elliott Smith songs but I'm trying to make a Spotify playlist with a bit more songs.

Congratulations, Nassim! (She and I now share a birthday, too!)

Obviously, the first song that jumped to mind was "Lullaby" by The Cure. But on second thought, that may not be appropriate for a newborn. :D

Woo hoo! Hope you and the family are enjoying these precious moments!

I've got a playlist I have used before for Benji. Some aren't really lullabies, but they help keep things calm.

Depeche Mode's "When The Body Speaks" and "Goodnight Lovers" have always felt like lullabies to me

Congratulations, Nassim!

The lullaby I used to sing for my daughter when she was a baby (hey, I even sang it to my wife's belly before the birth!) is a traditional one from Valencia, my home country. The name of the tune is "Mareta, mareta" and it's a very ancient folk lullaby (from 1700). I've learned it from Al Tall (a Valencian folk group).

Sadly the link includes an intro (it was a kinda concept album for children). Maybe Miriam would prefer the sweeter version of Damaris Gelabert.

I changed the lullaby for my son. I used to sing softly to him the "Nana del caballo grande" (originally by Camarón based on a poem by Federico García Lorca). An excellent song backed by synths and sitar but probably you should not include it in the playlist, the extrapowerful singing by Camarón will probably awake Myriam immediately.

The cover of Elisa Lipkau is sweeter…

But Myriam's daddy surely would prefer the psychedelic-rock cover by Derby Motoreta's Burrito Kachimba

For a long time this was always the last record I played before I turned in for the night. Very soothing.

I keep listening to the 1 hour loop of "Waltz for Zizi" from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. Awesome background music.

HARD AGREE! I was going to recommend Harry Belafonte, who we'd play for my daughter when she'd have trouble sleeping, in particular his version of Leadbelly's "Cotton Fields"

I went looking for a consistently slow version of Cotton Fields, and they may not exist. Found dozens of versions, and all put at least some energy to it, including The Beach Boys, Credence, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, and Elton John. Leon Russell has a great instrumental that starts out slow but then goes into hyperdrive.

Maybe the best alternate is from Odetta, who Belafonte learned it from.

Congrats on the new arrival, Nassim! I'd suggest Schlaflied by Die Ärzte as long as you don't understand German...I remember you saying you really liked songs in 3/4, have you tried any to get the little one to sleep? I can't think of a song in waltz time that isn't relaxing.

I'll throw in What Am I Here For? by Jade Bird based on the sparse, gentle melody rather than the despondent lyrics.

Sunday Morning always sounded like a lullaby to me

Congratulations on your daughter
A baby who likes Cat Power can only make a nice gift
I really like the cover of I Found a Reason

Chopin, Nocturne in G major, Op. 37, No. 2
This song here straightens my brain ... it should be good for kids too

Johannes Brahms - Wiegenlied
Billie Holiday - Summertime
Sarah Vaughan - Lullaby of Birdland
Miriam Makeba - Ntjilo Ntjilo
Roy Orbison - Beautiful Dreamer
Billy Joel - Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)
Hayley Westenra - Hushabye [whole album]

Thanks to Billy Joel I have often misspelled the word lullaby.
