Albums and Songs of 1961 Polls

Post by Holden »

1961

AM Links: Albums, Songs

Alright, next up is 1961! I will be tallying the albums, and Schüttelbirne will be tallying the songs. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

1	50
2	45
3	40
4	36
5	32

The deadline to vote is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on March 31st.

Compilations are not allowed. If you're unsure about a release date, consult RateYourMusic.com and AcclaimedMusic.net.

Thanks to Listyguy for running last years 1970s poll from which I have stolen pretty much this whole intro and format.

Two wrongs don't make a right. The recordings on the album were all released on singles in the 1930s. It doesn't qualify as an album. It's a compilation on RYM and is not even eligible as an album here at AM.

10. The Shirelles Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
This one already made the final Top 10 for 1960 (it was indeed #1), so a vote for it would mean lost points, so I took the liberty of moving this one up.
12. Art Blakey - A Night in Tunisia
Blakey recorded countless versions of this song, but the first one was in 1954, so this is not eligible here. I moved the rest up.
18. Etta James - I Just Want to Make Love to You
This was eligible for 1960. I will count the vote and it will help the song in the wildcards. I hope all of this is alright with you, if not let me know.

For what it's worth my take...

It seems that the reason that albums and songs are separated is that an "album" is understood in the modern post Frank Sinatra concept albums sense:

An album was conceived by the artist as a group of tracks "belonging" together whether because its music was derived from the feelings of the songwriter(s) over the last year or two of recording (looser standard) or they all had an intended unifying theme/concept (strict standard).

The old "album" definition (a repackaging of several singles into a binder not unlike a photo album for commercial/marketing purposes) seems to fit the Robert Johnson KING OF THE BLUES release.

My opinion is it should NOT be eligible.

3 | Jacques Brel | Le moribond
Well, you wanted it, so...

"Quadrangle" seems to be from 1960's Jackie's Bag: https://www.discogs.com/Jackie-McLean-J ... ter/224470

"Le moribond" seems to have been a single in 1960 (https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... -livrogne/) and three people voted for it in 1960 (ranking it at #101 in the final ranking). It was also released on N° 5 in 1961.

There's no need to change anything, though. I'll just add the points to the results from 1960 for the wildcards.

Ha, I asked for it! It looks like our usual arbiters of release dates are divided about Jackie's Bag with Discogs and Allmusic saying 1960, while Wikipedia and RateYourMusic state June 1961/July 1961 respectively, RYM citing 2 sources to support their claim, unlike the 3 other sites I've mentioned. I had wanted to include JB in my albums for this year but I'll defer to your decision 👍

I did some digging about Le moribond and it appears we had this debate last time we covered the 60s http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... 562#p37562 RYM is the only site out of 6 that Miguel references (plus Wikipedia in English and French, which he doesn't) that indicates a 1960, not a 1961, release for the single and the 1961 camp includes Brel's official website.

Thanks for the research!
Regarding Jackie's Bag: Jazzdisco has it as 1961: https://www.jazzdisco.org/blue-note-rec ... /#blp-4051 and I feel like they might be the most trustworthy source for the jazz albums they have catalogued.

Generally I will just count anything and the stuff that receives votes over multiple years will maybe get in by wildcard.
I'm pretty sure I will find some source stating a different release date for most songs, but chasing these sources down isn't really a priority for me.

(Also I'm not sure why RYM seems to be the standard for release dates. Is there a specific reason? It seems rather arbitrary to me why they are supposed to know the release dates better than other internet sources.)

These are both 1960. The Rosie was already on the Billboard singles chart in December of 1960 and the Ramrods entered that chart in the second week of 1961.

Hard to say, it might be because of the size of its userbase compared to Discogs or Allmusic, for example, and we'd expect for at least one person out of those many to get it right. I know Wikipedia can come in for its fair share of derision but its release dates are generally well-sourced, sometimes going to the degree of linking to web archives of magazines from the time. I've known Allmusic to be as far out as several decades too late in its Album/Song Information field, even if it will hover around the correct date in the Review section.

I find RYM to be the most accurate and user friendly, which is why I use it. For example, a Joao Gilberto album was listed under several names in the 1960 poll, and I was able to find it easily on RYM. Also, AM is heavily based around RYM, so I think it works best for polls on the AM forum. Best obviously if others like other sources better, there’s nothing wrong with that!

Over the years I made several year corrections for RYM that were never enacted. They insist upon evidence from the internet, so in cases where I had personal knowledge they refused to accept that. So one person getting it right does not mean anything to them. They'd rather get it wrong with lots of agreement from other sources that also get it wrong.

14. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers | A Night in Tunisia (AT #4049)
Blakey recorded countless versions of this dating back to 1954; the first version with The Jazz Messengers I could find is from 1958, so this would be ineligible for this poll.
I'll move the rest up, if you don't mind.

It makes no difference to your scoring but this is from a 1960 album. Watch me get called out for a wrong year now...
I removed it. Thanks...

Yes, of course. I prefer the 1961 version so will keep this as 1961 on my personal charts but have no problem with the adjustment for poll purposes. Thank you.

I can imagine that's infuriating- while I can understand that documented proof can help, I don't get the blanket "no original research" policy, to use Wikipedia's term, that these sites exercise. Knowing something to be true's clearly better than re-circulating a widely shared inaccuracy and there's nothing to stop you from setting up a webpage solely to cite it as a reference for a correction, which just seems flimsy.
